Concentric Rhythm by Jeff Holtzkener got it's first update in 3 years
I hope Auv3 is next 😊

Description:
Concentric Rhythm is an interactive tool for generating, developing, and exploring musical patterns. It uses geometric transformations and many other simple processes to create, develop, and evolve music.
The looping musical timeline is visualized as a circle, which allows you to treat musical patterns as concentric shapes. This makes performing geometric transformations such as rotations, reflections and folding very natural and intuitive.
It also provides tools for melodic lines such as random-walk generation and scale-based inversion and transposition.
You can generate rhythmic lines using cross-rhythms or the Euclidean algorithm, and allows for great visualisations of complex polyrhythms.
Concentric Rhythm now allows you to assign each pattern to a different MIDI channel and send your results to other MIDI compatible apps or devices.
Concentric Rhythm was originally developed as a new way to improvise electronic music, but it is also a great tool experimenting with and developing musical material, or just for casually playing with music in a unique, hands-on, way.
Many of the ideas here were inspired by the book ‘The Geometry of Musical Rhythm’ and this app is a powerful tool for anyone who is interested in exploring these ideas. But at the same time is easy enough to use that anyone (even with no musical or mathematical background) can make interesting musical patterns and think about the musical world a little differently.
Note: There are known compatibility issues when used with AUM, especially on iOS 14

Awesome update!
Super! Great app with LOTS of potential.
Like a much-missed girlfriend from Junior School turning up in College. Lovely.
How does this compare to Aphelian? Seems a bit similar in concept.
Getting started video might give you some clues. It’s basically a Euclidean sequencer. Aphelian can be semi Euclidean - but it acts a bit more like a groovebox.

Let’s hope for auv3
Fantastic update !
Now I will think of using it, being able to have midi channels is what it always should have had....
Thanks to the dev
Reminds me of patterning 2 for synths.
Works great in standalone sending midi into AUM to instruments like Modal or Mersenne or other Standalone apps but I can’t get it to load in Audiobus 3 or IAA in ApeMatrix I’m aware there is a problem with AUM as mentioned in the update. Hope it can be fixed.
It also mentioned midi as a IAP but it appears it works with no extra purchase unless I’m missing something?
What a bucket of fun this thing is! Just lost myself for a couple of hours exploring the gadget ... really intriguing ... intricate, precise and wildly unpredictable ... seems to have a life of its own.
So good you overlook the odd crash and the like ... but it gives you amazing control over fine aspects of sound ... or you just let the thing run rampant! I just had it driving a fistful of iceworks synths, ting and a couple of others ... swung from Africa to Asia and back over a few minutes via India. Excellent covid lock-down therapy.
As usual with brilliant synths it demands improvement ... and this app is screaming with possibilities and potential .... BUT the interface FFS! ... endless scrolling through drop down menus is a serious impediment to playability ... is all that empty black space actually doing anything? A few sliders, an LFO or two and a more intuitive finger-friendly interface ... and this thing's an absolute scorcher. Really useful and very educational.
Chords and arps functions might be handy too ... build them into those rings ... just like everything should be.
Can't wait for Msr Gavinski's wandering through this ... he'll love it - as do I. Best money I've spent all year so far.
It IS that good and I agree with you about Doctor @Gavinski....
Midi send as an IAP $4.99 does that cover midi export or live midi playing or both?
Thanks!
There's a drum machine I have in my forest of apps whose interface has a passing resemblance to this. Can't think of the name right now.
Doesn't matter. This is really easy to use. I would usually qualify a statement like that by saying that it's easy for me to use but honestly, if I can use it then you can.
I have recently discovered that all of my MIDI woes were due to a misunderstanding of how channels work. It's very simple once you know how, of course. Like tying two bits of string together.
Thank you for this, I am having fun.
How do you launch it in audiobus or Aum. It doesn’t work for me. Also how do you buy the midi send iap? Can’t make this work.
Hold on @Charlesalbert, just having a look.
So, in Aum you're choosing an Audio track and then Inter-App Audio, right?
Yes, exactly.
I'm sorry but Aum has decided that it does not wish to load Concentric this morning. I have tried loading it, loading it after opening Concentric on the desktop and closing it etc but it will not load. Aaargh!
If i remember correctly (probably not) I simply used the transport control (play, pause etc) within Concentric when I used it within Aum. They were either in the settings panel or on the right side of the start screen.
Actually, now I come to mess around with it again I believe that I didn't actually use it with Aum. I just used it alone, with a hardware synth.
Have you tried using the transport controls in Aum? What happens when you do? Have you tried using it on it's own?
eta: won't load in Audiobus either. iOS 14.3, 2018 12" iPad Pro. Or in Apematrix.
Can anyone who has this app, iOS 14.3 and a 2018 iPad Pro confirm that this loads into their DAW of choice, please?
I will try asap
It doesn't load i AUM on my iPad Pro 12.9 IOS 14.3
The app description has a note about it:
Note: There are known compatibility issues when used with AUM, especially on iOS 14
One of the nice features of the app is, that it supports slide-over:
Aha! Thanks for your help, @White, thanks for bringing this to my attention and thanks for doing what you do on here. I really appreciate it and it has brought many an app to my attention that otherwise would not have troubled my wallet.
I can’t understand how to use it. Really. Ok I read about not working inside AUM, but why it doesn’t load also in Audiobus?
It's frustrating, to be sure. Have you got it working on its own, without a DAW?
It should work in Audiobus 3 as that came with the last update but it won't load. It appears as a IAA Generator in Apematrix but doesn't load. Anyone got the app on iOS 13 still get this to load?
It's certainly a hidden gem this one just needs bringing up to spec.
Will try to drop the dev a email later about the problem as he is a 1 man developer on word press.
Have you found where it is and if the IAP makes a difference? I can't find where to buy but was thinking maybe that's an issue as it seem to work without but ...
@Pxlhg Well midi out and export definitely works without any IAP as I sent midi to AUM and exported midi out to another app. So not sure what the IAP is for or it even exists maybe the dev forgot to alter the app description page. Can't find a store function within the app.
Just contacted the dev now see what comes back ref Audiobus 3 not opening and the IAP issue.
@Michael I don't think the Concentric Rhythm app not opening in AB3 is a audiobus problem as its happening in other DAWs but just reading you in on this one.
Hi all. . .
I’m the developer for Concentric Rhythm. I recognize a few of the names in this thread as folks who were a huge help getting the app off the ground a few years ago. Thanks again - this forum has been a great source of feedback.
So it’s been a while. I had some pretty ambitious ideas which didn’t pan out and which blocked me from putting out updates. And life got in the way, too. But I finally decided not to let perfect be the enemy of good, and put out the improvements that were useful. To be honest, I basically expected this update to be a baby step that went under the collective radar, but having received a dozen or so emails overnight (thanks by the way for those of you who pointed me to this thread), I guess it hasn’t.
I can clear up some of the confusion here.
• I have removed the IAP. Audiobus requires its participating apps to register their features with Audiobus. From Audiobus’ point of view, an app is either registered with it or not, so including Audiobus MIDI within the IAP is a non-starter. Since it didn’t make sense to have a MIDI IAP and free Audiobus, I decided to remove the IAP and make the entire existing app paid. ( At the same time, I like the idea of having a free app, and my plan is to release a separate free version that contains neither MIDI nor Audiobus. I’ve registered this app - called Concentric Rhythm Basic - but haven’t released it yet. Any future development would go into the paid version, but projects created in Basic can be opened in the paid version.)
• At time of writing, less than 1% of existing app users have received the update. The app store gives devs the option of doing a ‘phased rollout’, where a random 1% get the update on the first day, 2% have it by the second day, 5% by the third etc, and it will be a week before everyone has access to it. The idea being that if there are unexpected problems, that first 1 or 2% get to be the proverbial ‘canary in the mine’. So most of you who have downloaded the app in the past are still using the old version (i.e., no Audiobus MIDI). I’ll let you know if I pause the rollout, but otherwise everyone should have it by next Saturday. If you haven’t downloaded it before, you should be seeing the paid (and updated) version in the app store i.e., 3.0. If there are real Audiobus MIDI issues for those who clearly have updated, I’ll do my best to fix them.
• I know it isn’t working smoothly with AUM. This is one thing that I’ve struggled with from the start. Compatibility with other 3rd party apps is always going to be a crap shoot, especially given the number of changes Apple introduces with each new update (affecting 1. Concentric, 2. all the other apps in the ecosystem, and 3. all of their possible interactions). Audiobus, in providing toolkits and documentation for devs, makes compatibility much easier. Until iOS 14, although AUM wouldn’t launch Concentric, it was still usable, but this seems to have gotten worse recently. None of the changes that I introduced should have had any effect on AUM interactions, so I suspect this is iOS 14 related. I’ve exhausted my options and there isn’t much I can do here. Apologies - I know how important this is for so many iOS music makers.
• It probably won’t become AUv3 compatible any time soon. The current architecture of the app makes this basically impossible. Believe me, I’ve tried. I would need to rewrite the app, and I’m not going to make any promises about that. I might take another stab at it (I made a first attempt over the summer), but I don’t want to create unrealistic expectations. Life is complicated.
I’m still very much open to feedback, especially on the newly released features like the Audiobus MIDI send and the export MIDI file, since I want to make sure these work properly (they do on my devices, but I haven’t had many beta testers recently to hear how it’s working for others).
Thanks again for all the feedback.
Cheers,
Jeff
Cool, evidently I already have this app... just needed updating!
