MODULATING GEAR: w/ iOS apps?

Have you used any of the LFO/mod apps that convert the headphone jack into voltages?

I have just bought a few and getting started.

The real exciting thing is having LINK on these!

I have now some use for these old iPads laying around.

Tell me about your experiences or apps you have tried doing this?

I tried CV Mod and Brute LFO for my old Roland SH-2. I couldn’t get them to work...I think a lot of the vintage synths need a much stronger signal than these can put out.

I ended up getting a Keystep 37, both to use as a controller and as a MIDI to CV intermediary for iPad midi apps.

  • I use sounds from iOS or the Alesis SR16 that's sitting on my desk to CV input triggers to my modular units. For accurate CV modulation you need a 'DC-Coupled' interface which is something that I don't have, but audio out of a regular interface can work for triggers and gates and things. I sometimes need to use a boost pedal to get the voltage high enough to register.

  • I like cv mod and brute a lot, mirack is fun too. Finally was able to get stuff working in Drambo as well and using Bassline to trigger and play my Werkstatt yesterday and it worked with pure acid and Riffer as well

For a reasonably up-to-date list of DC coupled audio interfaces see:
    https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/which-audio-interfaces-are-dc-coupled/

If you have a Eurorack system then it's possible to get hold of voltage multipler modules: the Doepfer A-183-3 can multiply an incoming voltage by a factor of 4 (incidentally, it only has one channel: the dual input and output jacks are multiples). One channel of the Intellijel Triplatt can double the input voltage. There are doubtless others.

Otherwise, if you have the necessary soldering skills, it's not difficult to build voltage multipliers. See https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14328 and look for the voltage multiplier circuits; the AC encoder circuits are for a specific feature of Expert Sleepers Silent Way software.

They are working great on my Moog semi modular gear.
I picked up a few new ones that were a little more expensive.

But, WITH LINK this is really helpful.

The extra LFOs on the SUBHARMONICON GRANDMOTHER MOTHER AND DFAM are amazing!

    Good deal!

From the top of my head, here’s a project file that should work with it, just use a stereo break out cable and the gate is the right channel and the left is the notes. Yeah it’s working pretty good I’m able to get everything in sync using Link and lots of room for experimenting. The wavetable oscillator makes for some crazy modulation too that I wouldn’t otherwise think of. With this set up, you should be able to change what AU you’re using too without making any other changes, just make sure the midi to cv is connected to the midi au
