The tragedy and potential redemption of MSXII Sound Chomplr
Ok, Ok, maybe tragedy isn't the perfect word, however I can't seem to come up with a better one. Let me explain. Chomplr is quite unique in the IOS app field. The tools to chop and manipulate "samples" (I'll explain, later) is stunning. Not being hyperbolic. It really reminds me of the Ensoniq ASR10. the tuning, lo-fi, reverb, flanger, dirt, drive, lo and high pass filters and ability to use chromatic scales makes it so good, BUT, the business model of locking it up without being able to use your own samples is TRAGIC. I have bought nearly all of their sample packs(which are good) but I would rather be able to not use the same sounds as others in music production. WHY MSXII Audio? WHY? Is it a coding issue, or greed? If this app offered unlocking of the app to use your own samples, I would gladly without reservation pay up to 30-40 US$ easy...(maybe more) Yes, that's how good this app is for what it does. Unless I'm living under a rock I don't see any other IOS app that does what it does so quickly without linking apps in AUM. If I am living under a rock, forgive and please recommend an app that does something similar to Chomplr. So, if you guys at MSXII Audio are reading this, please give the option to unlock this app. Name your price. You guys have done something good here that could be something great. Let me be clear here. If Chomplr gets audio import it would be Epic, File folders like BM3 would make it Legend.
Comments
Pretty sure I heard them say sample import was coming.
My first issue is that even if I wanted to check it out (£5 isn’t that much), I’d still have to deal with its 1.3 GB size. In other words, the IAPs are already loaded and just get unlocked.
This strikes me as asinine. Why carry all that deadweight around if you only like one or two IAPs? Blocks Wave doesn’t do that.
What does the sampler do that sEGments doesn’t, let alone BM3, in your estimation?
If that happens, and possibly for free, I would lose it.
Workflow. I have both. BM3 and sEGments are good, but really tedious. sEGments is lacking in the effects options and in BM3 its the same. Adding other AUv3 effects is a good option, but if I can do it inside of one app, why compromise? Also, I understand the frustration the size of the app with unlocked IAP's but I have bought most of them(Only the loop packs 1-3 left) so i'm cool on that side.
I read that too.
I hear you. I’d rather take up space with samples when I choose too, not have everything.
Exactly, such a unwise decision on developer's side... Deleted the app after discovering sample import did not exist. Great rompler thought. But because of its flaws I had to look elsewhere: ReSlice and sEGments could be worth mentioning as alternatives.
....Eventually
Without Sample import it’s a lame duck to for me plus I don’t need to jam up my iPad with 1.3 GB of someone else’s samples I’ll never use.
Tragedy for me and I bought a lot of soundpacks to show some support. I really doubt that they will implement sample import as the said when they released the app.
3 big disappointments for me are:
1. Samples being part of the app rather than downloaded as needed.
2. No sample import.
3. Start and end position. I know they improved it but it's still not great.
And if I went on about it the effects would be next on the list. The fx are IMPO very, very nearly pointless. Being so limited I'm not sure why they would even bother. Its one small step above a few on off buttons for effects.
yah number 3 for me was the deal breaker. A shame as I dug the aesthetic of the samples and the FX I thought, while pretty stock, were quite good at being able to put a quick personal spin on them. I could totally look past sample import being missing as I get it from a biz point of view. It could be fun for just quick noodeling and casual sample fodder but omg it is so frustrating setting ranges, even after the update that improved it a little bit.
I supported it even though I wasn't super happy with the other app from them and I fully regret it. The drum samples are fine, but the ambiguous licensing I keep reading about makes the melodic samples a no go. It's supposed to be a rompler, which is fine, but they did state they would add sample support and until they do, I have much better uses for the 1.3GB on my ipad.
Bought it but haven’t opened it since the day I bought it. Would definitely use it if we could import sample but sEGments pretty much has what I need covered for importing and chopping , followed by ReSlice 🤷🏽♂️
I believe it was spoken about in another thread in this forum. A lot of people were concerned about no audio import, especially since it came out really close to sEGments. I personally grabbed sEGments over Chompler for that very reason. I have no idea when, but it seemed like it was definitely on their app update list.
Yeah it sounded like it was going to get some changes and be universal but then there was one update for some fixes and it just never seemed to be brought up again
I have both Chomplr and Segments. I like both for different reasons. I suspect that I will never become famous or do anything that will get me sued for anything that I do creatively, so the legality of the samples isn’t too much of a concern.
Chomplr samples are very inspiring. I like the way the app handles the sample manipulation too. I just wish it didn’t take up so much space. Space is the only reason I haven’t reinstalled it. I’d say the sample library is the key reason to use Chomplr.
By the way, found this their Facebook:

Chimplr is yet another one of those apps I bought because of the hype. It’s just a waste of space for my workflow tbh. I can see why people liked it, but it’s one of those I bought because the hype was so huge. Definitely learned my lesson about hype buying lol
I saw a nice demo and for $5 I figured I'd get something out of it... the install is taking forever.
Hopefully, I love the defaults but apparently the IAP's will all be ready to go so I might play the
IAP demo's and go one step further.
I'm still not conversant with this style of music production but I just watched a Henny the Biz video
and I can see the attraction of a well crafted Hip Hop beat. It's seductive but like any decent genre
it requires work to learn. Maybe Chomplr will get me moving... I just want to blow some solo lines over the top of a nice loop and maybe learn to build larger structures from loops using classic song forms.
Yeah it’s crate digging “in a box.” MSXII is great at creating sounds that sound sampled, dusty and funky!
Did they pull Chomplr off life support? No updates or new sample packs since forever. And what of being able to load your own?
Chomplr has been updated with sample import. https://apps.apple.com/nz/app/chomplr/id1470553213
