Are there any iOS DAWs that use iCloud for storage?

One thing about using iOS music software that has surprised me is the way a lot of simple music apps make use of iCloud as their default file storage option (several simple audio and MIDI recording apps do this) but, as far as I know, no iOS DAW uses iCloud in this way (aside from GarageBand, obviously).

Am I wrong about this? Are there any iOS DAWs that feature iCloud integration and use iCloud for storage?

Perhaps integrating iCloud with a DAW is more difficult than in simpler apps - I don’t know. It sure would be useful, though. All changes made to a file would be instantly accessible from all devices and saved projects would sync across all devices. Anyone who works exclusively in the Apple ecosystem would benefit from this.

I should mention that I use MultitrackStudio and Audio Evolution as my iOS DAWs and I have no plans to switch. Nevertheless, curiosity has the better of me and I figured that this would be the place to ask.

I should also clarify that I am not talking about the ability to send a project file to the iCloud as one would to Dropbox, etc. I mean actual integration where iCloud is a save location analogous to saving on the device.

  • Only other one I know of that natively did was Auxy, but that’s since changed and I’ll use the phrase “DAW” lightly... but yeah. That and GB are the only two I know that did it. Auxy stopped doing it because folks ended up losing samples (projects and samples were cloud stored but when samples weren’t used for a hot minute iOS would offload from device = problems).

Oh my gosh, I’d forgotten about Auxy - I once downloaded it, completely forgot about it, and about a year later I saw a folder in my iCloud Drive called Auxy and wondered, What the heck is this?

Wow, I didn’t realize that about iOS! Unused samples were automatically offloaded? That’s not good.

  • Yeah any data really, in my experience. It’s kinda good and kinda bad, like I don’t need all my iCloud saved photos always on my device - good. But if I started working on something a few months back and then decided I wanna pick up on it and samples need to be redownloaded - bad.

Depending on how the app handles it, maybe it would be graceful but I know Auxy didn’t handle it well and a bunch of folks complained about it so it moved to storing all samples with the project (and off iCloud thanks to the “missing projects” fiasco)

  • Can you give some examples of the apps that use iCloud in the way you describe? I agree, that would be a great feature but none of the apps that I use do this as far as I know.

  • I use iCloud with Korg Gadget for projects and samples.

Here are a few of them - they’re simple (but good) audio and/or MIDI recording apps.

These three are audio recording apps (and the first one, Thafknar, is also a reverb app).

    http://polaron.de/Thafknar/

    https://www.openplanetsoftware.com/just-press-record/

    https://atlantiasoftware.com/app/simplemic/#iphone

And this one is a simple MIDI recording app with an onscreen keyboard:

I find this last one very useful for quickly recording a musical idea in MIDI, which is then instantly available on all my devices. No need to open up a DAW or start a new project to record the idea.

I should add that all of the apps made by Kira Q Tech (the developer of MIDI Recorder with E.Piano) are cool.

Ah, I understand now. That is the thing that is irritating about iCloud - I don’t believe there is a choice as to which files are online only and which files remain available on one’s device. I believe Dropbox and OneDrive give users that choice but I don’t think iCloud does.

Good call I’d forgotten Gadget! That one also will sync cloud native.

I didn’t know Gadget worked with iCloud - thanks! Actually, it seems ironic and surprising to me that Korg would have iCloud integration in any of their apps. They seem like such a proprietary company - considering how reluctant they have been to make their apps AUv3. I’m glad that Module Pro is AUv3 now but I think most of their synth apps are not.

Yeah, been using their iCloud sync option for years now, iPad <> iPhone.
Their Electribe Wave is AUv3 too. I personally do everything in Gadget so AUv3 is not important for me.

Wow, very cool! I really like Module Pro, but I have much less familiarity with Gadget. Would you say it’s a full featured iOS DAW?

Guess it depends on the type of music one makes. For what I want to do it’s full featured enough ;) Others might criticize its rudimentary way of dealing with (long) audio takes. But the occasional time I use that it works for me.

Very cool. I’m curious: How are the piano roll and MIDI editing?

  • @LeftyChris Piano roll and midi editing are fine for me. I can quickly zoom in/out, move notes, draw ‘motion control’ aka cc, pitch bend etc.
In case you didn’t know, there’s a free version to check it out: https://apps.apple.com/app/korg-gadget-2-le/id1092332319

Sequencer is scene/pattern based (16 bars max length). This might or might not be a problem for you, depending on your style as mentioned above.

Very cool about the piano roll and MIDI editing.

Is Gadget kind of like Ableton’s session view or FL Studio, then?

16 bars maximum for recordings would not work for me - is this limitation only in the free version?
