Solved: How to send midi out to desktop from midi apps that lack that feature?

Someone on a comments thread was asking me today whether Midi Strummer could be used to control desktop synths or external hardware. I was surprised to find that, unlike things like Polyphase, where we can choose how to send midi out, via network sessions etc, this has no such feature. It seems this applies to maybe all or most Audio Unit midi apps? This was what Paul the 4Pockets dev reckoned:

'I guess this is kind of true of most AUv3 plugins and it is older standalone apps that rely on the old virtual ports that may have this kind of ability. Not sure if there are ways to route MIDI out when running under AUM…'

So is there some kind of workaround for how to get midi generators like this to send midi to desktop apps or external hardware?

  • Host the AUv3 in an app that supports hardware outs and route the MIDI internally. AudioBus, AUM, ApeMatrix...

Agree. If you can't host, then free, reliable midimittr can do simple routing, and MidiFire can do everything.

What if. Just want to send it to the desktop over WiFi?

Also, how to send a midi processor to an out in AUM? I only know how to send it to an audio instrument slot. Or maybe I misunderstand the above description. Clearer explanation would be good what are the exact steps needed to make midi Strummer send midi over WiFi to desktop apps from AUM?

  • Ah, no worries, figured it out, nice one!

For others, here are the steps.

Connect your ipad to your mac using the audio midi setup app on mac.

In AUM midi routing pane, route Strummer, or whatever other midi app you are using, to your mac's Bluetooth, which will now appear as a destination in that routing pane.
Open synth or daw of your choice on your mac and choose your ipad Bluetooth as a source.

No need for midimittr, it seems. Sweet!

[EDIT: Whoops, I see you solved your problem. I'll leave this explanation up, since I think it's how you'd need to do it if you wanted to send via wifi to a non-MacOS desktop. . . Even in that case, though, Bluetooth might be preferable easier solution, as you found. The suggestion below actually sends over wifi, not Bluetooth.]

Sending midi from iPad to desktop via wifi uses the rtpmidi protocol, I believe. I've set this up before between an ipad and a "desktop" Raspberry Pi. I believe once the rtpmidi connection was established, I simply routed the midi within AUM to "Network Session" and it was routed to the Raspberry Pi. I used this implementation of rptmidi on the Raspberry Pi: https://github.com/davidmoreno/rtpmidid I'm not sure what you'd use on a Mac or PC, but I'm sure they're out there. Once the desktop is running rptmidi I used the free "MIDI Network" iPad app to initiate the connection between desktop and iPad. Once that connection is created, as I said, routing to "Network Session" within AUM sent midi from iPad to desktop.

  • @hes thanks, I changed the post title to reflect that the problem has been solved 👍
