Experts Needed: Drambo and Tonality Question

Hi everyone, has anyone been able to get Tonality’s Chord Pads to work in Drambo like it works in AUM?

I’ll explain: When I load Tonality in AUM as a MIDI effect, then assign as the MIDI input for an AUV3 synth I can capture the MIDI notes in Atom.

If I load Tonality in Drambo then load a synth, I can trigger the synth with Chord Pads, but the notes do not get recorded.

I did find a workaround which involves using MIDI Tools Route plugin, but when I play the notes recorded there is no sound unless I disable Chord Pads and MIDI Route.

Too many extra steps, does anyone know a better way?

Things are about to change inside Drambo in regards to MIDI routing, in fact it's a topic currently worked on.
At present, routing MIDI to a track will make MIDI available for modules on that track but not the sequencer.
Only external MIDI is recorded, that's why you need this kind of routing workaround for now.

Gotcha, thank you for your insight! Yeah, I do use the chord features on my keyboards just fine. I can’t wait for the next Drambo update!

Oops, I delivered bad information. 😂

Try loading Drambo as MIDI FX inside Drambo standalone. Then load Tonality inside MIDI FX Drambo. Drambo will record the chords like normal and you can literally drag from plugin Drambo to standalone Drambo clip launcher.

An AUv3 can’t load another AUv3. So, I don’t think you would be able to load Tonality into the embedded Drambo instance. But I think you could route midi from an AU loaded in the Drambo standalone to the Drambo midifx instance.

Still interested in knowing what other methods people are using 🤔

The classic way of doing it is to have an app like Streambyter or FreEWI running in the background, providing one simple job:
Create a virtual MIDI port and echo everything it's being sent to.
You'd place a MIDI Out module after Tonailty and choose the echoing MIDI port like FreEWI or Streambyter.
Drambo will now receive the MIDI on the track as if you had played it on the keyboard (given you haven't disabled MIDI input on the track).

I wish it was that simple but I’ve never had that method work when trying to accomplish midi generation and recording on the same track without massive midi feedback. I usually send the midi to a blank track and copy the midi back to my original track, then disable the midi generator. Sure hope we get auv3 midi recording in a future update.

This also worked for recording MIDI from Helium. But — geh — “convoluted” is right.

Just could also try recording your Chords to a FlexiSampler and use the Sample Slices to play your Chords back on that Track 😉

It’s a great solution once you’ve found your Synth Patch Sound. Here’s a quick HowTo if you’re interested:

You're right. I've always used it on different tracks (I've sent the MIDI to the actual track where I wanted it) so I didn't fall into this trap but agreed, it should be more straightforward and not a hack.
    Definitely something to improve.

  • @AppJunky Cool. Sometimes the simplest things are the best. I find it’s also a good way to force me to commit to a sound and grow the song out of what i am hearing, and not worry about constantly fiddling with Patches until i find the ‘right’ sound.

It’s funny what happens to your brain when you’re playing back waveforms instead of Midi notes 😜

    Hi @AppJunky,
I was tinkering and discovered Tonality standalone sends MIDI. To state the obvious: the problem with MIDI FX in Drambo and some other hosts is that MIDI FX work as outputs and are not recognized as a MIDI input. If you’re using an iPad you can multitask and open Tonality standalone on top of Drambo standalone to record chords! Tested it and it works.

Tonality has a MIDI output setting:
    1. Press three dots in lower right hand grey corner
    2. Select Settings - Sound and MIDI
    3. Enable Send MIDI Out
    4. Disable soundfont

    Drambo
    1. Settings: Enable Background Audio - On (Inf), if needed

  • Aces. 👊🏼™️Not at my iPad atm, but does Tonality work in split view with Drambo @Stuntman_mike

The circle of fifths Au in Tonality is pretty cool too.
