Moog Model-15 Say’s Purchase on my mac even though I got it on my Ipad?? What is going on right now?

The title says it all... Moog says that the Model 15 synth will be free to people that already has the app on their phone or ipad. If I go into the appstore, it says Purchase for 30 or something dollars which makes no sense when I just bought the app on my ipad. Are they fixing the issue, or are they never going to as this is driving me nuts! I don't know what is going on with the app store on Mac but I don’t know if I’m the only one.

Comments

  • I didn’t have that problem, I downloaded Model 15 on my (intel) mac for free. Are you using the same Apple ID on both devices?

  • agree to purchase and then it just fixes itself.

    i know....

  • It will look right up until the very end like you are buying it, but then it'll say that you already own it and do you want to download it for free.

Ridiculous, but that is the way the App Store works when an app is originally released on one platform, then it becomes available on another. You'll see this on the iPhone too when an app that wasn't universal becomes universal.

  • Just in case, try Cmd-R to see if refreshing the App Store helps.

The App Store is interesting... Another factor is if you're signed in with the same Apple ID already, it should pick up that you've already purchased it. For example, I bought Model 15 when it first came out. Just checked on my Mac (signed in with the same Apple ID), and after a search on the App Store I get this...

    Also, a heads-up, that it's macOS >= 11, aka Big Sur :wink:

  • Apple is supposed to be synonymous with “user friendly.” They seem to be incapable of applying the same principles to commerce.

Why couldn’t they build something better than the App Store (or iTunes)?

Exactly how far is "up until the very end"? I had no problem with Model 15, it just had cloud download icon and I was able to download on my M1 macbook for free. NVM, however, shows the $8.99 price and I've gone up to the dialog where you enter your email and then AppleID to finalize the sale, and it still looks like it's going to charge me.

Isn't clicking after you input your AppleID the final step to purchase? Do I need to go through with the whole thing before it tells me whether it's charging me or not? It seems that there is then no way to know whether you're going to be charged or not. No point at which you can back out, if it finally turns out they are going to charge you. Is that right?

If in doubt, download by finding it in your purchased apps list.

Thanks. I rarely look there. NVM shows up as purchased in my iPad app store, but doesn't show up in my Mac app store purchased list. It has an $8.99 price for it on the Mac. So I guess I'll avoid downloading on the Mac unless I want to buy it again. Even though, strangely, Mela Synth from same developer shows up as purchased on both iPad and Mac, and I only purchased it on iPad.

Yep. You go through every step to purchase it. Every step. Then after it looks for all the world like you just re-purchased an app you already own it says something ridiculous and insulting like “You have already purchased this app on another device. Would you like to download it for free now?”

When an app comes out on a platform it wasn’t originally released for, it doesn’t show up in purchased apps on the new device.

It took me a bit to grok what this means. I have many apps in my purchased list on Mac App Store under the 'iPhone and iPad Apps' tab. All of these say, "Designed for iPad. Not verified for MacOS." So using your terminology, you would say that none of these apps have actually "come out" on the Mac platform. They're apps that Apple has transitioned automatically, without any developer intervention.

If, on the other hand, a developer has specifically released an app for Mac platform, even if it was one a user purchased on iPad, then it will not show up in this purchased list.

I'm not sure how this relates to what I'm seeing with Nikolozi's NVM app. NVM, which I purchased on my iPad, does not show up in my purchased list on the Mac App Store. It does, however, show up when I search for it on the Mac App Store, and it has a price for me of $8.99, despite the fact that I purchased it on the iPad. The puzzling thing for me is NVM also has the label "Designed for iPad. Not verified for MacOS." Has Nikolozi somehow specifically "re-released" the app on MacOS, despite that label?

Are we talking about on an M1 Mac here?

    Yes.

OK, it's different for an M1 Mac. Unless iOS developers opt-out, their apps show up automatically in the Mac App Store. These are the ones that show up as "Designed for iPad. Not verified for MacOS."

If an app has been specifically coded to work on both Intel and M1 Macs (the Catalyst framework is meant to make this easier), then it will show in the App Store more like a normal Mac app. But, if the app was only on iOS when you bought it, now that it is also on the Mac, the App Store isn't bright enough to realize you already bought it on a different platform. I'm guessing they only update whatever database that says you own an app on different platforms during the initial purchase.

Instead of checking whether or not you own an app at the beginning of the download process, they are waiting until the very, very, end to go check that. Dumb.

So, on an M1 Mac, you more than one possible condition:

    1. The iOS developer has opted out for an app: the app doesn't show in the Mac App Store.
    2. The iOS developer has not opted out: the app shows on an M1, with the "Not verified for Mac OS" warning.
    3. (Not sure about this one?) The developer has marked the app as Apple Silicon compatible. App shows without the warning(?)
    4. iOS Developer has released a MacOS (Intel and Apple Silicon) compatible version, but you bought the app before the MacOS release: It looks like you didn't buy it up until the very, very last moment.
    5. Developer has released a MacOS (Intel and Apple Silicon) compatible version after you bought the app: App probably shows as you owning it, but if not you can find it in your purchased apps.

Those last two (4 and 5) are the same on iPhone for universal apps that were purchased when they were only on iPad (or vice-versa, in the rare case that an app was released first only on iPhone). It appears as if you have to buy again on the iPhone, but you aren't charged in the end.

I suspect that it's tied to when you bought the app. I you bought it before the Mac version existed I don't think it will show. If you bought it after the Mac version was released then it would show. I've no proof of that though. It could be more random than that. The App Store is amazingly poorly thought out in some of these kind of details.
