A new guitar effect for Drambo: The Atreus Huge Guitar

Drambo Patch #300 on Patchstorage.
Built for guitar but certainly just as fun with other instruments.

Enjoy!

  • Well, that’s definitely a Swiss Army knife of a Drambo patch! Going to take me a while to work out what all that stuff does, but looks fun. Thanks! :)

  • What an amazing patch! Thank you very much @rs2000

  • Awesome, thanks!

  • Great patch. Super user friendly.

  • Thank you guys! Hope you're getting some great tones out of it 😊

  • Sweet! What “recently released pedal” was this inspired by?

  • Extremely well done mr @rs2000 !!!

  • Flippin' 'eck that's good...👍

  • thanks very much @rs2000

Sending hugs to @Lady_App_titude for mentioning it. This Drambo patch is her fault.

    Nice! Thank you!

Excellent review of the original pedal here, generously done by JHS though it isnt one of his. His channel is great btw - and I’m not even a guitarist:

Also - now been trying the Drambo patch in an AUM fx slot with Fugue Machine and various synths: @rs2000, you have created something wonderful here.

Ha! Brilliant job of instantly capturing the spirit of the Weirding Module!

The world thanks you for helping us achieve more weirding.

  • That’s fantastic! Thanks for posting.

  • @rs2000 What an awesome patch! Thanks for sharing this with us.. 👏

    A short demo:

    Great!

  • @rs2000 You should call your version Muad'Dib or "the Kwisatz Haderach".
To be really cryptic try "Timothée Chalamet"... Dune (2021) due out in October

    😂
I do prefer names that I can pronounce - although it doesn't really make a difference on a worldwide forum.
I might just call it Paul though.

  • I might use it for House Atreus. (Is that a thing?)

Please let me know when you go live.

  • Wow. This also makes you want to play Riff Rock.

It was tricky for me to figure out how to get my guitar to be the input for your script.
Drambo requires effort to understand the audio and MIDI routing. Since the script downloads with a Looper pre-installable with a sound loop for instant demo I had to
add an audio input and route it to the FX section of your script (and I deleted the Looper).

Here's my first test drive. I made a Gauss Loop of the "sub" drenched riff and they added
a terrible solo over the top. Garage rock without a single call from a neighbor. My wife did ask me to turn the metronome in AUM down because my headphones leak.

Did you build this is just a day? or 2?

  • You're right @McD, I should add a few notes about actually connecting an audio input.

Thanks for the test drive! It's fun to hear the guy in action. I like it 👍🏼

It didn't take too long - like so often, when I spot something new, I grab the pad and try to build it. This time, the octavers took a few attempts, maybe an hour in total. The next day I've added the alienizer, another 20min maybe. It's a ring mod but with stepped values that are hopefully more useful (easier to dial in halfway usable values) than a linear knob like in the ring mod Moogerfooger.
I always judge by my ears - if someting doesn't sound like I want it then I just drop it.

I hope to see a lot more downloads for your little masterpiece. It's obviously useful
for synths and drums and anything that makes sound.

I figured you'd appreciate something to validate the work. I know I can do better but why make you wait just because I'm not keeping my chops on guitar fresh?

I guess 20 years of digging into synths and sound engineering pays off with expedited results. You hear a black box and know what's in it algorithmically and from the circuit
details because you've taken everything apart and studied the schematics.

  • Thanks for this great FX @rs2000 !

Is there any link where how to connect sliders in Drambo is explained ? I don't understand how that works.

You first tap on the destination (which can be an input jack or a knob that has a little grey arrow on the left), then the slider output magically appears. Tap on it to connect.

@rs2000 thanks for your help 🙏🏻😉.

To use this new tool for me, I've tried to make a sort of clone of the T-Rex Quint (before Nembrini releases it's new FX) ; here it is : https://patchstorage.com/qinqan/

I've used your guitar sample, I hope you won't mind 😎

  • Very nice! I was thinking of recreating Propellerheads Reason's Scream 4 distortion unit, it was my favorite tool to shape sound back in the days. This seems like a good base to start with

  • @Gratouilli Great! And nevermind, the guitar loop is one from freesound.org.

@skrat That's a good idea. Scream 4 is what I'm trying to achieve with my patches as well: Simple controls, great effect. Good luck. This will be a very useful one for sure!

Yeah, it looks so simple on the interface but when I dug deeper, there's a lot of things going on in each mode (compared to typical distortion units) - bit reduction, sort of delay/flanger, compression, tape simulation, analog vs digital distortion, ring modulation, extra filters,... and of course all combined and balanced very well.
Currently what substitutes it partially for me is K-Devices Shaper.
Also I loved the built-in iOS AU distortion, but it works only in GarageBand and ZenBeats as it has no GUI and is probably not intended to be used by other hosts than GarageBand. There is also some interesting combination of ring modulation, delay or flanger or any kind of feedback... And you can get pretty crazy distortion out of it. Of course, more for experimental music than for just getting distorted guitar sound. Unfortunately, I don't use GB nor ZenBeats so it's not much use for me.

If you're interested in the Apple AU Distortion, you could try Jens Guell's WU: AUDistortion. He's "wrapped" a simple GUI around the Apple component, so you can use it in any AU host. The controls can be a bit arcane, but you can study them in GB, and use that knowledge with the WU.
