+1!
I have this on the vinyl! Classic.
Best to you @RUST( i )K. When I was a kid I loved playing with my Gilbert chemistry set. It’s the same with music. Only then the goal was making foul smelling stuff that fizzed and maybe would explode (a rather simple end point I never seemed to reach).
Same with music... except the goals are slightly different.
I don’t have a pull towards any of the obvious self-destruction techniques. I’ve tried most of them and enjoyed them immensely but never to the point of craving.
I have a go to however, food. I don’t abuse it as much as I used to but I know it’s there under the surface. It used to be anything: chocolate, pizza, fresh fruit...just in large quantities. The classic hand to mouth compulsion but requiring something landing in the stomach...the cigarette smoke wouldn’t do it for me.
I am an otherwise fit guy so people around me wouldn’t really suspect anything. I’m talking of the distant past, but I can see this same mechanism of inner hurt, be it some kind of locked in ptsd or current affairs, manifesting itself in various self destructive ways.
These days, especially in lockdown I see myself fighting different, perhaps more formidable opponent: screen addiction. I have noticed at times going in a loop between here, beepstreet forum, eBay, local gumtree, Facebook, Al Jazeera and back to here etc etc. I love looping!
So what’s happening here? Same thing, being locked in a repetitive behaviour that is a safety from uncertainty of getting out of the loop. Eventually, the result is: agoraphobia, social depravation, physical and therefore degradation etc etc.
Most importantly. When things get real tough, don’t fight it alone.
There’s a lot of hurt in the world and of course it is incomparable because we’re all different. Being open about it is definitely one of the best ways to move on.
