EG Pulse Questions?
I'm mostly loving this app, else I wouldn't be asking the following questions. (And yes, I've checked the manual at https://www.elliottgarage.com/manuals/pulseHelp.pdf)
Main question: I've been exclusively using EG Pulse as an AU in Audiobus/AUM. No matter what velocity notes are recorded at (my external MIDI-pads or the internal y-axis setting) the playback is always max/127? Did I screw up a setting? Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Or is this just how this app behaves?
Is there a way to get the auto-roll to work with external MIDI controllers?
Is there any sort of random-generate function? (Yeah, I'm just stupid)
In the Mixer, what does the "READ" button do on top of the Master channel?
In the Pads view, what does the "READ" button do
As an AU, the app doesn't scale and doesn't come close to fitting on my screen, (iPad Air4, the pattern buttons are usually offscreen). Is there a way to lock the screen from scrolling vertically down to the patterns (at least while you're drawing in the drum grid? I'm trying to delete notes and instead I throw the screen everywhere. Ditto for using the drum pads from time-to-time)
EG Pulse def has some UX annoyances and I know I would do some redesign (If the stop button isn't going to work, why show me the stop button? When I hit a save button, I want to save what I'm working on, not go find it and then overwrite it. etc...) but I'm a freak about that.
General Question: Why do apps make it so that you have to re-teach/learn MIDI for every single drum kit instead of having options for global mapping?
Thanks in advance for y'alls help.

Tagging @ElliottGarage for visibility.
I use Pulse all the time but only as an AU in CB3.
It’s powerful drum sample app. I hope EG is ready for improvement
Hi @boberto and thanks for your feedback!
The current version send MIDI out with fixed velocity of 100, I'm changing this to send the pad level.
About controlling the auto-roll via MIDI, you mean the ROLL button or the FILL? Probably I'm gonna add them in the future.
To create random patterns you can use the 'RAND' button in the GRID view.
You can also generate euclidean sequences using BEAT and OFFSET.
READ button enable the automations reading (MIXER->AUTO)
The app already lock the scroll automatically depending on the area where you're tapping. I just checked the grid area and if you're drawing some notes it doesn't scroll, maybe I'm missing something?
About MIDI mapping, I thought that an indipendent map for each drumkit would give user more flexibility.
Just a thought - could you have the option to save the current midi mapping as a template? You could then apply it to any other kit. That would give you the best of both worlds.
Is Pulse going to get longer patterns?
@espiegel123 it's in my TODO list, but not for the next update
@ElliottGarage Im starting to love EG Pulse more and more as I use it more... i only just purchased this past Black Friday. is there any way that you could add a resize view in AUv3 mode, so the whole app fits on the screen, particularly in AUM? Even if I make it full screen in AUM as an AU, the app still doesn’t fit on the screen, I’m using an iPad 6, 9.7 inch screen, so I’m left scrolling a lot. If I make the EG window large enough I’d love to view the whole app without scrolling. Also Since so much information is displayed in the upper right grey display box, when I’m working in the Mixer, On the Auto Page adjusting Probability, etc, or any lower part of the screen, I have to keep scrolling up to see what the exact values are and it really slows my workflow. Love the app, but so much scrolling around slows me down. Any plans or thoughts?
@Poppadocrock I'll take a look at it, maybe for the next update
Thanks, That was quick, lol. That would be amazing. In Standalone it’s good, but if there’s a way to fit the whole app, in the AU window, or any other ideas that minimize the scrolling I’d be much more in love with this app. Thanks again! Can’t wait to try the new sEGments FX! I love sEGments, Congratulations on another great release!
@ElliottGarage i apologize, I just realized this was bullet point number 4 in the original thread post. My bad. Thanks for listening, and hopefully if you make the Au window big enough you can find a way to make the app resize and fit the whole thing. Thanks again.
One of the most responsive devs out there. Good stuff.
@Poppadocrock have you tried resizing by only adjusting the size horizontally? This trick seems to often give you a scroll-free window, even when you make it small! A few attempts are sometimes needed.
Huh, let me try. Thanks for the heads up, I shall see.
I’m with @Poppadocrock regarding the resizing. As he said, when used standalone/full screen I can see everything, but the elements don’t scale as an AU.
@ElliottGarage thank you for your response!. I’m not talking about midi being sent from EGPulse to other destinations, I’m asking about the velocities as EGPulse records them. I can hit record and play notes soft-loud-soft, but when it plays back, all I get is loud-loud-loud. Are you saying that all notes, regardless of velocity, play at ‘100’?
@boberto you need to enable 'READ' to read the current velocities
@ElliottGarage - Thank you very much for your help/response!
(While I have your attention - Bug Report: The STOP button doesn't work inside AUM as an AU. I can press stop and it will instantly mute any samples, but the loop continues on the next beat and doesn't actually stop!)
I now know that the "READ" button on the Mixer page and on the Pads page is the exact same thing and means "Read Velocity Values", not just "Read Automation".
Only my opinion but I have never seen note velocities tied this way to the velocity automations. For me, core recorded velocities are not part automation, and unless I change it, I expect the default velocity to be how the notes were recorded. (If I want them louder, I'll automate a slide in the mixer or simply re-record that note again). Personally, I consider automations to be a separate department. I'm not the smartest person, but the single word "READ" honestly didn't mean anything.
Regarding vertical movement - The "Pads" page doesn't move unless you fat-finger it, so I'd say you're good there, but the "Grid" page is where I personally have all sorts of issues with vertical scrolling. Since not-everything shows on the screen at once (iPad Air4\2020), I know the page kind of does need to be able to scroll, but when I want erase and move vertically between lines is when I primarily have this issue. Don't have an easy fix for ya.
Once I understood the "Quantize" setting applies to the grid (I expected it to only apply to recording) the UI is great when the app is stand-alone, but I never actually use it that way (and I'd imagine few people on this forum do) so perhaps you might consider some changes to the AU? Also, as someone that mainly only uses one hand, I do wish many of the controls were toggle instead of needing to press two things at the same time.
Thanks again!
Longer than 64 slices?? As it is I wish I could get it down to 32 by default.
It isn't about slices. It is a matter of having multi-bar patterns. When I program drum grooves, I mostly think in 2 and 4 measure grooves not one measure.
Cut/Double your BPM? And of course, there's song mode...
Altering the bpm isn’t really an acceptable workaround because if you are synching number of synths and/or loops you can’t really do it unless you put everything at the wrong tempo...and if you do that you lose resolution for fills. Song mode also not a workable workaround if what you want to do is change patterns on the fly...which is how I use a drum machine. Build up a library of patterns and trigger as needed.
I love Pulse but use it less than I would if it could handle at least 2 bar patterns.
Following recent updates, crashes in AUM in multi out mode when adjusting effects. Just seeing if anyone else experiencing?
iOS 14.6 iPhone 8+
Does anyone know if the developer is aware that when picking samples in Pulse's library that the picker doesn't work right and often adds a different sample from the one you picked?
@ElliottGarage are you aware of this? It makes putting kits together from the samples in Pulse's library extremely tedious.
@espiegel123 sorry, fix just submitted for the review!
Hurray! Thanks
Does Pulse still only do 1 bar patterns? It’s the only thing stopping me from using it. Similar to @espiegel123 above I think in 2 or 4 bar patterns
Still 1 bar patterns.
Thanks
I dont know if @ElliottGarage overread this. This is important.
Really important for better usability.
As @Poppadocrock mentioned the resizable window is needed for a nice fitting workflow.
I never come to this bug, because the mentioned stuff above.
Thanks for your fast responsibility @ElliottGarage.
EG Pulse improved pad color management - grid view & mixer view
@Hypervox @headmademusic you can already save the current midi mapping as template and recall from another kit
Looking good @ElliottGarage
