SWAM Polyphony just using GeoShred (and AUM)

This might be opening up a hornets nest but here we go...

I’ve looked on the forum to see if this has been suggested before but can’t find anything so here is a way of getting polyphonic SWAM sounds just using GeoShred and AUM.

There are issues... see later... also see attached video...

1 In AUM load up 6 Audio instances of the GeoShred SWAM sound you want
2 Load up a Midi instance of GeoShred Midi Processor
3 Set all 6 Audio channels to have a Midi Source of the GeoShred Midi Processor
4 On the 1st channel, set the Channel Filter to None and then to 2
5 On the 2nd channel, set the Channel Filter to None and then to 3
6 Continue with 4, 5, 6 and 7
7 In the Midi Processor instance select a Preset such as Preset 1, Shred Lead and make sure the Midi is something like AU MPE
8 Play away!

There are two tricks here...

Trick 1 is that the playing surface preset must be one capable of playing polyphonically. This rules out the SWAM surfaces which are Mono and if you try and set them to poly via Performance Settings you get a warning message saying ‘SWAM instruments are Mono’

Trick 2 is that in this Midi mode GeoShred sends midi from each string on a separate channel I.e. String 1 is channel 2, 2 is 3 etc.

But... there are a number of issues...

Issue 1 It’s all a bit flakey. AUM crashes out the GS instances if resource usage gets too great. Cello, Violin and Flute are generally OK. Oboe and Clarinet are a bit more problematic, Sax is almost impossible (for me) to get 6 stable instances (IPad Pro 2018). I have emailed MoForte about this and they have replied that the SWAM sounds are computationally expensive and the behaviour is as expected.

Issue 2 Stuck Notes. These happen quite often but I can’t consistently reproduce them and don’t have the midi knowledge to know where the issue lies.

Issue 3 Instrument control. As the playing surface is not a SWAM one you lose the SWAM specific controls e.g. Overblow, Finger expression etc. It may be possible to modify a non SWAM preset to do this but haven’t had the time / knowledge to do this.

Hope this of use... I think the string per channel feature has a use outside of SWAM and I had also forgotten about the use of a Midi Processor version of GS rather than the full instrument for controlling other sounds.

In the Video I have 5 Flutes and 1 Clarinet for the lowest string.

Comments

  • Nice. I did something similar using Polythemus AU Midi app to split out the channels from
chordal input when GeoShred SWAM come out and someone else followed suit.

I didn't know GeoShred loaded as an MIDI FX app... I'll check this approach out for sure.
