Sample-based “Glitchy” Synths?
Not busted synths but synths that process samples. Looking for more like:
FRMS
Quanta
These apps are great for loading up and processing samples.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
Comments
iDensity has a keyboard mode. Similar to FRMS but glitchier, less of a synth than a sound mangler. Finest is to scrub with your finger and record the movement. I highly recommend it.
IVCS3 can also load samples, blends them with its own sounds. that “synth” is crazy. It’s also crazy hard to tame.
What about Glitch core? Load a sample in a daw or AUM file player and glitch away
Then theres the upcoming glitchcore app.
iDensity: I have this and yes it is satisfactorily glitchy. Will look into keyboard mode.
IVCS3: I love it. Forgot it used samples. Will revisit.
Thanks, @tahiche .
Tardigrain from Erik Sigth for $5. Scratchy and itchy.
Tardigrain: does it utilize a level envelope? I’m looking for apps with attack and decay modulation.
I realized that Factory makes use of samples sometimes, but really haven’t gotten anything that resembles the sample itself out of it. I realize that’s not the point. The Transformer preset, for example, uses samples. Tried switching out the samples there but no real difference that I can tell. Must try experimenting with that. Anyone have interesting Factory sample experiments they care to share?
I think it has that feature based on the Jakob Haq Video on Youtube:
I remember it being magical for drones. I'm re-installing it to check on the ADSR
feature. I have nothing better to do.
Jakob also has a Granular Synth survey video.
ANYONE: Is this an AU FX app that can apply ADSR envelopes to notes moving through that
are triggered by a shared MIDI input controller?
I know FAC Envolver can generate a MIDI CC Envelope that can be assigned to a volume control in a synth or FX app but that envelope is
created from yet another app that provides the amplitude envelope as input.
SpaceCraft Granular also comes to mind. It also has envelope control.
Spacecraft in live fx mode in AUM is spectacular. You can also run Borderlands as a live effect in AUM. Also: Soundscaper & FieldScaper.
Tardigrain doesn't have any "bite". It was designed for long form sounds: drones and such.
It creates and internal reverb and washes out any crispness. Spacecraft Granular can get really punchy.
FRMS is great and I can see why you'd want something similar. SpaceCraft is closer.
All the Scaper apps should fit the bill, with SynthScaper being the most immediately musical.
Nave and Poseidon can also load samples and mangle them into submission.
Poseidon is dope!
Borderlands
I know I’m going OT by mentioning hardware, but I can’t not mention the PO-33 when it comes to sample destroying. Chop ‘em and throw crazy effects on there. Can get real glitchy real quick.
Moebius Lab is great for sample mangling
If you broaden your criteria, there are many MIDI controllable FX apps that can process samples. Since Quanta and FRMS are granular synths, you might want to focus on those sorts of effect apps.
