Getting iPad, Audiobus 3 (AB3), Audio Evolution Mobile (AEM), and Duo2 interface to play nice

Up front, I know very little so far about AEM; maybe this is a simple question.

My setup: guitar > stereo pedalboard > Duo2 input > AB3 on iPad > Duo2 output > amps. I have analog FX going on my pedalboard, digital FX in AB3 going on my iPad, two lovely tube amps... Everything's groovy, but can I record it (minus the amps, of course) with AEM?

What I am running into is that AB3 can send its audio output to the Duo2 output or to AEM, but not both. Is there a way to get it to go both places? Alternatively, can I get AEM to send its output to the Duo2 output? That might even be cooler.

  • Update: My iPad is one of the newer ones with only a single USB-C port. On another poster's advice I got a Nucleum breakout dongle that has (2) USB-C ports, (2) older style USB ports, (2) different card readers and (1) HDMI port. It works great most of the time.

    However...

When I am running AEM without the Duo2 connected, I get audio out of the dongle though one of the USB-C ports via a USB-C to RCA adapter cable, but when I plug the Duo2 into one of the older USB ports, whether or not I have set it up as an input to AB3, I no longer get audio from the USB-C port. Furthermore if I disconnect the Duo2 when this has happened, audio does not return to the USB-C port; I have to quit and relaunch all the apps to get it working again.

Does anyone know what's up with that?

@ggunn iPadOS can only support one audio interface at a time. Your USB-C to RCA adapter cable is actually a DAC, i.e. an output-only audio interface. When you connect the Duo2, it becomes the interface of choice, cancelling the other adapter. It's generally safer to complete all connections before starting music apps; they're not very adaptable when things change on the fly. So it's not surprising that apps don't switch to the adapter when you unplug the Duo2.

AB3 is not very flexible regarding audio outputs, though you might try sending your signal just to AEM, and try to invoke a monitoring capability from that app, maybe even to a second AB lane. The AUM app is more flexible, since you can direct audio input to a bus, then allow two different channels to access that bus. In your case, those channels could send to the Duo2 and AEM.
