Sample management- where do you keep your samples?
Hello folks- sorry if this is a stupid question but how do you folks manage your samples? I have some nice drum samples that i would like to layer on top of some beats I make on my iPad...
I’m wondering ..can I use my samples from an external HD plugged into my Powered usb hub? If so do I have to drag them on to my iPad or can I run the samples straight from the External HD like I would on a computer ?
Thank you
Comments
I don’t know of any music apps that let user load samples from external drives without making a local copy though drag and drop into apps that support it will make the process fairly transparent. NeoSoul Keys can put its library on an external drive and play it from there.
Ah ok so I have to make local files in the app itself .. I see.. thank you
Put all your samples on your computer, even on an external hard drive plugged in if you want.
Share that folder via your operating system, windows or mac.
Go to files and add a server to your locations - this works even if you are connecting to a windows computer.
Then you can just go to that server, browse all your samples from your computer in Files and the import files windows a lot of apps use e.g. AUM.
My plan now I’m on iPad OS 14 has been derailed by a splurge on the unexpected Eventide 50% sale. That is to buy Auditor which I believe can audition as a slide-over and supports drag & drop. On iOS 12 I used AudioShare which supports slide-over and audition, but not drag & drop and only for files in its own storage (I think - and I’m hoping Auditor will audition from anywhere, what I’ve read suggests so).
Great question! AudioShare for me.
You make this sound so simple
though I've never managed to get it to work.
Off topic, but sort of on top... I wish BM3 would run samples from iCloud instead of importing them. It doubles space used. This might be a dumb question, but can BM3 can be ran from the iCloud?
That’s an interesting way to do it . Will give it a go . Thank you 🙏
😂
Hey Mike . Thanks for the reply.
How do you do it in Audioshare ?
Thank you 🙏
Hey Gav . Thanks for that . Gonna have to investigate Auditor. That could be a good option if I understand it right .
Thanks man
Yeah to be honest, I'm surprised it worked that easily too, but it did! I think I had to make its own user account on Windows and make sure the share permissions/access etc. were set properly.

No, it can't. Sorry.
But don't worry too much about the actual storage space. It doesn't really go up when you copy files. It's a confusing topic so I won't derail this thread. There's a stub of an article on the wiki that sort of starts to explain this. I need to put some time into fleshing it out.

Basic sample management: I store my samples in AudioShare with folders based types like kick, snare, bass, ambient etc.
What app do you use to make music?
Your external drive will show in the Files app, so you can load samples from the Files app or drag and drop from the files app.
Excellent I understand. I use CB3. Starting to make sense. I did just check out Auditor though and that looks like it might find ext HD that show up in the Files app. So that might be another option.

I had to make my router assign my computer as a fixed IP or every time I booted it I would get a different one. But yah when it is all set up, very cool! For big batches of files though I have to use iMazing and a direct lightning cable connection. Lack of a proper progress bar in iOS Files drives me nuts.
Here is my IXpand drive plugged in and showing in Files app.

Here is my IXpand drive in Auditor:

I used to use Audioshare, all samples categorized into folders and sub folders. But then I noticed I couldn’t import sample folders into Drambo, which turned into a major time suck to import file by file.
Now I store all my samples in Documents by Readdle. It’s easy to open a web connection with my Mac to transfer and organize files. It can also open WebDAV connections, allowing me access to all my Drambo work, even from the same device. I can transfer hundreds of samples to the correct locations instantly now.
After a total iPad refresh from scratch, I haven’t reinstalled AudioShare. It was good for a lot of things, but not being able to import folders from AS was a serious game killer. Now I do my audio editing with Auditor, which suits me fine as there are more advanced features like split and merge.
@aleyas here is AudioShare open in Drambo for me:

Oh sorry @aleyas I see you wrote folders. 🙃
Although there is an Import Folder option in Drambo. Update: I see what you mean, AudioShare is grayed out in the Import Folder option... strange. Maybe a different folder system?
Thanks for the link @urbanvanilla
I store a lot of my samples in a Google Drive, but I actually use Documents by Readdle. Supports Slideover, and I’m able to easily download the samples I have in my Google Drive, and other locations. Also has drag and drop, and I can instantly preview all my samples. Plus, it helps keep me organized so that I save only the best samples on my iPad. Plus, it’s free.
Now, to use a lot of them in a project, I used to use BeatHawk. But I just realized how awesome Audiolayer is thanks to @espiegel123 and @rs2000 post and tips.
The other application I’m looking into is Koala Sampler. Although it can store 64 samples, the fact I can open a project from Koala on Android and Mac OS is INSANE.
I still use Audioshare, Splice, and Blocs Wave, mainly because of AUM, and getting quick ideas.
And currently, for videos, Google Photos. That said, the unlimited storage is being discontinued in June. But for now, it works.
So, to summarize, Documents by Readdle to store things. Other iOS apps to actually use them. Currently, I’m using Audiolayer and BeatHawk, but I’ll probably switch to just Audiolayer.
I did make a video on it here. Everything I mentioned here is there (except Audiolayer)
There’s a note in the video that you can have three different instances of Documents by R open in slider over. Could you explain that a little more please? I gave it a shot but my slide over (and drag and drop for that matter) fu is very weak.
This might help.
Edit: With the new update, you can have a lot more instances. Tap on the documents by readdle icon again, and you’ll see a plus sign at the top right which allows you to make a lot more instances.
Really good question.
I use AudioShare using WiFi drive
While Audioshare is nice for managing samples offline and doing simplistic edits, it lacks connectivity and only supports Dropbox.
Readdle Documents is unique in that it supports a multitude of cloud services, file operations, slide-over view, very flexible local WiFi sharing and a nice & quick audio file player.
It also doubles as an excellent Files.app replacement for Drambo and Nanostudio 2 by connecting to them via WiFi WebDAV.
Reading from a USB hard drive or stick still requires the Files.app though. Luckily, those limited iOS-specific USB storage devices aren't necessary anymore.
I store everything in Files. Just like I’ve been doing for years (decades) with Finder on a mac. I have my own folders/category system (that makes sense for me). Used to use AudioShare for awhile, but ever since iPadOS, I can easily manage my own system again. And I absolutely do not use iCloud ever.
