Backing for jamming on guitar

edited February 2021 in General App Discussion

I know there are threads on this but I've had a look and hoped there was more to find.

I know what I want so I'd prefer app suggestions rather than alternate methods to achieve the same outcome.

I like to noodle away through scales with a backing track. I have a few (Chordbot, iReal Pro, Tin Pan Rhythm, Jam Tracks) that do what I want but they all lack something, either a sound I like, chord choice or sharp/flat chords.

I know I can jam with YT clips or my own music collection but I prefer to do it this simple way. Just wondering if there are any new or killer apps for this purpose that I am not aware of. List away!

  • Not new, but I like Session Band in various flavors for this.

  • Not a fan of SB. Thanks, but I find it a time consuming thing to setup since day one many years ago. Maybe I have fat fingers.

  • I think Chordbot is about as good as it gets but I can't rename songs and don't always like the backing options.

The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Agree about Garageband. Dan Baker has tons of videos on YT about this. Well worth a look.

  • I know it's not the best response but I need to be able to sit down, open an app and at the most choose a style, key and chords. If it's not that simple I won't have time for it. Plus I like that it is a spontaneous decision. I suppose I could create some tracks in GB but I really hate working with it. You know how you gel with some things and others not? Anyway, that's how it is. Jam Tracks would be ok if it had more style options or the option to change chords and do any key.

  • Bit left field but what about Piano Motifs.. either random or user driven, keys, scales and rhythms. Point it at a drum app / synths etc if you don’t want piano.

Not a bad idea. I'll check that one out. Although really looking for an in app self contained experience.

Actually it doesn't even totally matter if it is music on occasion. I found an app, Mondello or something like that, it was a metronome I think but had a circle of fifths that you could select a drone sound and modify it. that was pretty cool. not an always solution but it was cool being a single note to try varying the scale between modes etc. Unfortunately it had an outrageous subscription plan.

  • Not strictly answering your question as it’s a couple of apps but I love to jam along with my guitar using the lumbeat apps. I have a few of his drummer apps so I will use one of them along with iBassist, I’ll sometimes choose a beat and chord sequence or I’ll let the dice roll and choose for me. I’ll usually get iBassist to send midi chords to a couple of synths or a piano/organ to bulk up the sound. Endless fun

What is it that makes iReal unusable to you?

  • iReal is good. I hope I didn't say unusable. Just that I like some simpler songs and I find the app a bit daunting unless I am slowly working through a jazz sheet. Like GB I could create a bunch of songs and save them in a way that they are grouped together. Sometimes I just want to be able to open an app, select 4 or 8 chords, a style if I'm lucky and jam away.

  • Yea just gonna say the same. I real b 2! :) You don't even need to note read if you dislike, if your a jazzer you can play Joe pass styles and if your a deadhead well you can jams for hours!

Oh, hey ireal B with MIDI export for the synths and drums of your choice. I kinda agree they sound weak on their own so maybe that helps. Its basically band in a box if you remember, just alot easier and better. We will figure something out.
