IPad model choice?
Hi,
Because of a cpl of apps I use updates requiring iOS 13 I'm looking for a used iPad to replace my air 1.
I'm looking at first generation iPad pro. I have about $300 or less to spend. I use it for bm3, Keystage 2.0, drum perfect pro, and a variety of plugins.
I'm thinking of a 64 or 128 gig models. I'm assuming I can off load some storage to a USB device.
I have an I connectivity audio 4+.
I found one for $215 with a cracked screen.
Since the air1 was my first iPad, I'm not well versed on later models.
So, any holes in my plan? Are there better deals I should be looking at? I picked the 1st gen pro because it has 4gig ram as I understand it. Lightning port preferred.
Thanks,
Flow

I would not enjoy a cracked screen...
Here are some deals to consider. I have bought a few thing on Swappa, and it’s always been a great experience.

Hi,
I would get the screen repaired.
Thank you for the links!
Do you think this model would be good for live use with 3 or 4 softsynths playing and bm3 running?
Do all 1st gen pros have 4 gig ram?
I've searched Google but I want some reassurance:-)
Thanks

Only the first gen 12.9 inch has 4gb ram. The smaller one has 2gb. The iPad Air 3 has 3gb ram. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad_Air_(2019)
I think you're gonna be hobbled by the CPU more than anything, the iPad Pro first gen is using an A9 variant. If you're using not sample based synths I'd think you want the fastest CPU you can get at that price point. iPad Air 3 has lightning as well, but unsure if they're for sale at that price..
There are a couple of things to consider with the 1st gen iPad Pro. It's getting pretty close to or past the point where Apple will continue supporting it with new OS updates. They'll provide security updates for older OS versions for some time, but they will stop with new OS versions soon. Depending on the usage patterns that the device has seen, the battery could be getting close to needing replacing too.
I use a 9.7" first gen Pro. I figure I'll probably have to replace it after this year's WWDC. I'll probably end up going with something on the low end this time. Most of the "Pro" features are not something I consider useful for audio/music. The base model iPad is much faster than my pro is and is only in the 300 to 400 dollar range.
That's my impression, too. FWIW, Amazon has 64GB iPad Mini 5 on sale now for $335. That model has an A12 processor (basically same speed as the 2018, third generation, iPad Pros), quite a bit faster than the first generation iPad Pro (Geekbench score of 1111 for iPad Mini 5 compared to score of 640 for 9.7" iPad Pro, https://browser.geekbench.com/ios_devices/11 ).
The current regular (non-Air) iPads use the same A12 processor, I think main difference would be that the screen isn't laminated, doesn't look quite as good (plus, of course, bigger screen than ipad mini). 32GB iPad 8 is $299 and 128GB iPad 8 is $399 at Amazon now.
Both iPad Mini 5 and 8th gen iPads do have headphone jacks.
I have an iPad Pro 9.7. It is 2 Gb of RAM and the processor is a dual core. If I was buying from scratch at around this price point I would look at getting a slightly more recent “non pro” machine. This one is OK, but it suffers a lot with graphics intensive music apps (sound can become crackles pretty easily) and I am now finding I can max out the CPU pretty quickly without too much effort. It was released in 2016 which is like a millennia in iOS world. Don’t be thinking that just because it’s labeled “pro” that it will be stacks better when coming to audio production.
This is the quintessential point, I think...
Hi,
Thank you guys for your advice.
Remember tho, I coming from an air 1. I mostly hit ram limits now. I add a second instance of say pure synth platinum and poof.
I mostly use bm3, Galileo 2, pure synth platinum, sunrizer, and D1 and synth 1.
I want to get the new key stage app and the new drum perfect pro. So as you can see, mostly sample type instruments.
I'm a drummer and use a Yamaha multi 12 in a sidecar setup to the left of my hihat. The stand that holds my multi 12 also holds the iPad and the audio 4 +. The multi 12 has a sound module and a sequencer in it.
Being a drummer also means I'm Down to about 1 gig a week so money is tight in these times.
And having the name pro has nothing to do w it. It was just the ram thing. My recording studio is PC based running reaper ....no Pro Tools:-)
I'll look at the new iPads u mentioned.
Thanks
How much storage space do you need? Do you record to the iPad? How big are your samples? The 32GB storage current iPad is available for $300 now. It's got the A12 with 3GB of RAM in it.
Also, it's getting close to the normal-ish release time for the iPad Pro. That might shift down the price market for older gen Pro's.
Hi,
Neon silicon, yes I was just looking at that. As it stands now w my old air 32 storage, I've 4 gig left. So thats an issue. Does the new iOS which allows USB drives help me here?
I'd like to do some minimal recording, but the 128 version of that iPad is $399.
I'm assuming one can't record to a connected USB drive?
The 8th gen at 299 is perfect outside of that issue.
Thanks
I would miss the 12.9 inch screen if I went for a non ‘pro’ model.
It's going to depend on the individual applications. It's possible to use external storage now, but not everything does. Even if all of the apps you planned on using now did enable external storage, something you ended up needing to use later might not. The biggest issue I've got with Apple right now is that they don't put enough storage in their base models.
I've owned a pre-owned 12.9 iPad Pro 1st gen for several years. I've used it live numerous times with with Keystage, Pure Synth Platinum, Korg Module, iM1, Soundfonts player, and Hammond B3x in a typical set list (due to limitations of Keystage 1, these apps are often loaded in AUM and called in Keystage via virtual midi ports). I've not had any issues with CPU or RAM limitations. I've thought about purchasing a used Gen 3 iPad Pro, but really have no good reason to do this considering the reliable service I've gotten from my 1st Gen.
Also the 4x steps in storage, my iPhone SE 2020 is only 64GB as no 128GB model, my iPad 8 is 128GB probably right but no 64GB choice.
Yes yes yes! I have a 2nd gen Mini, I have an iPad 4 (the first with a lightning port) and I have a 2nd gen 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 and I just love the bigger screen so much! I would really miss it. For me a headphone jack and the larger screen are the first priority
iPad Pro 10.5 is still the best bang for the buck. 300 will just about cover it for 64gb on eBay. It has 4gb ram and plenty of power. I use it side by side my 11 2020 and don’t see much difference.
Do yourself a favour and don’t buy cracked for repair. People complain about iPads repaired using cheap parts. Touch screen not responding after a while etc.
One note of caution is the battery. Shop around and buy off a private seller as opposed to reseller.
I had a first generation iPad Pro. It was great but the screen became non-responsive. Started freezing etc. Took it to the Apple Centre to get options for repairing the screen and the only solution I was offered was "buy a new iPad". Worth bearing in mind before you buy one with a broken screen!
I just had my first generation iPad Pro 12.9 screen replaced for $100.00
Do not buy iPad Pro 9.7 unless it is new. Reason? Battery. I have one, and it is at 30-40% original capacity. Trust me, it is bad. You'll need to have it plugged to the charged all the time.
Rumour has it that Apple may move the new base model iPad releases back to March and sounds like it may get a little spec bump.
Having just bought an iPad 8, if a new release removes the headphone socket I’ll cheer, if it bumps the spec significantly I’ll sob.
What? Lol this sounds like the complete opposite of what someone would want? This is facetious right? Haha. I’m a bit drunk so maybe I am missing the intent here...
Well - a headphone socket is really handy, not having one on my phone is annoying. As a musician I’m also sensitive to price/performance.
@MadGav AH I get it now, cause you JUST bought it, if it turns out the next one removes the jack then you’re in before the lock, so to speak
and yes it’s always a gamble with spec bump (though I feel like the base models year over year just get a small processor bump, it’s never really anything too outlandish).
I totally read your comment backwards lmao, and I suspect the alcohol wasn’t helping either!
No idea how their track record is (could be overblown speculation every year) but...

"What's Next for the iPad
Apple is working on a ninth-generation low-cost iPad with a 10.5-inch display and an A13 chip, which is set to be released in spring 2021. The tablet is also rumored to include 4GB RAM and it is said to feature a thinner, lighter design with a Touch ID Home button and Lightning port.
Mac Otakara believes the upcoming ninth-generation iPad will be similar in design to the third-generation iPad Air released in 2019. The display size is expected to remain the same at 10.2 inches, but it will be "significantly thinner" at 6.3mm. The current eighth-generation iPad is 7.5mm thick, so a 6.3mm chassis would mark a significant design change. It is also expected to be lighter at 460 grams vs. the current 490 gram weight.
The new iPad will continue to feature a Touch ID Home button and a Lightning port along with a display featuring anti-reflective coating, P3 wide color support, and True Tone."
Very tired of the fetishism over making it super thin. Line up for yer iPaper I mean iPad.
Somehow, my older son bent his, and it’s VERY noticeable from the side. It still continues to function, but I seriously break into a cold sweat when I look at it from the profile view lol..
Yah never cared about thin.
Ram and anti-glare/color though... that would a major jump if true.
More than 128gb storage would keep me from chasing a new Pro as well I think...
The late 2020 iPad has a headphone jack and an A12 with Neural Engine. Not sure about RAM, but at $330 new, this feels like my next - until I see testing results that advise me against it.
FWIW I own 2 iPad Pros including a 2018 model, the performance is worth the price. However the lack of a headphone jack feels like it doubles the price often brings a screeching halt in the most surprising moments.
As long as they keep, the headphone jack
