New iPad docking stand 20/21

edited February 2021 in Other

Hey chaps..
I'm not normally so negative, but honestly.... Certain 'innovations' in the mobile space really make me question the way things have gone in the last 10 years..

What kind of age do we live in .... Where we stand to pay nearly $400 for an attachable keyboard? (iPad).

And now this, admittedly probably quite useful, product.. but again, look at the price.

Things are just ridiculous these days, sorry I'm not gonna sugar coat it...

This new Kensington dock, us firstly a rotatable iPad holder, magnetic.. you can just slap the iPad on to it and it stays put. Nice.

And it can wirelessly charge an iPhone or watch if you slap that down on the deck.

It also has USB ports at the back, hdmi2.0 (for all that 4k we can't actually get out of the iPad....) SD slot (I agree, useful).. and an Ethernet port (probably used by 1% of iPad owners).

And the price on this please?
$300+

With 'airpods max', (embarrassing name), the keyboard, and this, your often paying more for the accessory than you may be for the main device. I honestly feel like we're going down consumer black hole sometimes...

Ps, the image of the woman looking at her smaller screen with the giant keyboard out front.. that look silly enough for you?

  • Lol the second picture is pretty bad.

Lately I’ve been using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard with my iPad Air 3. I like it. It definitely gives a more desktop style vibe. A lot of the apps I have use keyboard shortcuts. The mouse pointer situation is still kinda wonky (still feels like an accessibility feature and less like a “here use this” feature).

But yeah... I totally agree. It’s kind of insane how much the accessories cost, sometimes exceeding the cost of the device itself. I’m torn. I love the ecosystem, but I realize to get the most out of it I’ll need some of these add ons and the sticker shock is... well... shocking :#

  • I use a £10 Bluetooth keyboard and a £15 stand. It doesn’t HAVE to be Apple.

  • I was thinking about buying the magic keyboard, but it’s still over a $100 CAD.

It’s like these video game consoles with the accessories add on costs.

Why buying a tablet if you are using it like a laptop?

There are lots of people now that mainly use their device for consumption but occasionally need to write an email or something. Kinda like the reverse of the people who buy the convertible laptops for a tablet for consumption but their usage mainly leans towards Windows for work.

I'd also guess that there are people who have gotten to like the no-hassle nature of iOS on their phones and get the iPad so they can do light work without having to deal with their Windows computers. I know several people who use Microsoft teams stuff on their iPads because using it on their computers is painful.

  • I agree with OP.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), that’s capitalism at work. If people are going spend $400 on it why not charge that much?

I think it’s pretty crazy and a waste of money (as well as a waste of an opportunity to create a cheaper alternative) but, at least here in the US, people buy stuff they don’t need all the time simply because we tend to have a good amount of disposable income during our productive years of life. I’m sure we all have friends or know someone that has rooms full of unopened Amazon packages or spends money on internet porn (Onlyfans, cam shows, etc...).

I think people tend to enjoy the dopamine rush of purchasing something rather than the actual item they’re purchasing, plus the weird brag that they get to say that they purchased an expensive item (think $40k millionaires).

    Weird times we live in.

  • It’s got a headphone jack :)

They must have a fifth column in the design department.

  • Yeah.. I think it's a shame as well personally... In the class of 'missed opportunity', yes I feel it is a shame that is not sensibly priced..

You never know(and neither do they in my opinion).... that they may have sold many more of it was cheaper...

Sadly, a very good looking product is going on to the niche, spank-da-cash category.

  • The more Apple tries to make the iPad into a computer I wish they would just make it into a computer. Without a proper file manager it won’t really ever be a replacement, but with one it could be amazing.

I went back to Mac as my main music took a few years ago for that reason and because I needed better audio interfaces, but auria is really exactly what I want in a daw- an interface that works just like a mixer. But editing, etc, is a pain for me on the touch interface. I haven’t tried a mouse with it, maybe I should at some point. But, I would not be able to do the work I’m doing right now on an iPad. Don’t get me wrong, my iPad helps me a ton in so many areas of my life, including music, and is part of my setup, but I couldn’t do music production or teaching by zoom solely with an iPad.

One thing I did notice in the photo- she’s going to wind up with lots of neck issues (like most of us) using that setup for a long time. My wife is working from home often as a speech therapist right now and uses her surface pro or her work laptop sitting on the dining room table, so she’s always hunched down. I have my MacBook set up with a monitor at a desk where I have to look at the screen without slouching, it’s helped a lot. I still slouch and have to catch myself, but it’s better than it was.

Oh, finally, you can find the “magic keyboard” used for not much. I think I got 2 for $50 total at one point, either on eBay or Amazon. I stopped using it as my main keyboard recently though and got a macally wired keyboard because Bluetooth disconnects often if your computer isn’t line of sight, or at least that’s true on my 2012 MacBook Pro. Magic keyboard and $5 Bluetooth mouse work with my 2011 Mac mini that is networked to the mbp to use audiogridder. I switched from the Magic Mouse (also purchased used) to a very ergonomic wireless (not Bluetooth) elecom trackball for the same reason, plus using the mouse was causing some major arm and neck pain due to my autoimmune condition.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. I agree, $400 for that dock is silly. My 128gb 2018 iPad cost just about the same.
