Newer live sampling/resampling performance tools on iOS?

The current performance setup I'm developing for livestream concerts is built around a 'centrepiece' of a few desktop analog semi-modular units. To contrast this I'm exploring live sampling/resampling apps on iOS.

Samplr is an automatic pick (which also defacto gets the full screen in performance) and I use Quanta in the background for some specific pre-prepared granular textures (it's very effective with the ethnic instrument 'khomus' that we work with).

I use an MPD32 controller as a 5pin MIDI interface and submixer for digital instruments, so that gives me some pads, buttons and dials to do stuff with. I'd quite like to do something sample based with the pads, and there are tons of great samplers (I love BM3's personally) but I'm not too interested in live tweaking on a 'production' interface (plus, Samplr already has the screen real estate). I've not been keeping up with app releases that much these days -- there been anything interesting released over the last few years that might allow for quick live sampling fun/jamming while mainly being controlled in the background?

Also @supadom did you mention that the old loopy to Samplr trick doesn't work any more? Will have explore alternative flows. You modified your workflows personally or have you moved onto new platforms by now anyway?

    Yes, you can trigger sampling using an external controller.
    If a pad already has a sample it will play, if it's empty it will record.

    That's good to hear! Credit to the developers!

    I found a good contract introducing data-sciency methodologies into a nonprofit's operations early last year. Funding got quickly pulled (do I need to even say the reason?) but I did manage to pick up a few bits of performance based Moog gear (turning dials and moving cables looks cool!) while I had a normal income for a bit. This is the first 'official' track I've used them on:

  • TBH though, without trying to sound blasphemous about Koala, if you’re already happy with Samplr, Koala doesn’t really bring anything else to the table.

    I'm pretty much looking for something that does what Samplr does but that can be shunted to the background for the most part and triggered from a pad controller while I jam different stuff on Samplr and analog sequencers run, so this might actually be a pro for me rather than a con.

    Yeah, I think I will. As Samplr will be in play anyway, that's probably all I'd really be using it for -- grabbing percussive sounds or bass tones from the DFAM and such like, so that unit can be used for other stuff while keeping those sounds running. I have an Alesis SR-16 on my desktop which synchs the Moog analogue clocks, that I'll most likely send 'generic' MIDI patterns from that will trigger different sounds depending on what Koala has loaded at that time.

    Nope Samurai not required for this but I highly recommend it for creative purposes.

    In case you plan to sequence stuff in Koala the Piano Roll the 'Samurai IAP' makes it easy to correct potential mistakes.
    Stertching short samples into granular sound-scapes is also pretty nice...

    Give the base version and try and I strongly suspect you'll end up getting the Samurai IAP as well :D

    AudioBus3 (Host)
    Koala Sampler
    Animoog (thanks to @circledsquare for fine tuning tip -- can finally use this at concerts after all these years)
    Loopy (utility) ((not needed -- Koala Sampler does this better for my use case))
    Samplr

    Long live IAA .. I guess :D

    Had a bit of a play just now and it's a really great workflow for me. Koala is great for capturing the audio and prepping it then its really quick to send that over to Samplr for more freeform jamming. I like it!

    Just got to deal with / work around the usual IAA stability debugging :#

    They are both great and so different, that neither is a substitute for the other. Where Koala is especially handy is if one needs a large number of samples available. Having 64 samples available can be awfully handy.

    There is tons that SamplR can do that Koala can’t touch, and I could see Koala as a handy tool to use with SamplR.

    Have you looked at using AUM as your main routing tool and then using Drambo to capture and perform both software and hardware synths.

    AUM could be the glue which keeps all your setups together and Drambo offers the added bonus of being a good sampler and sequencer which can all be controlled via Midi inside of AUM.

    How i imagine the setup:
    . AUM as host
    . Drambo AUv3 instance as Midi sequencer
    . Drambo AUv3 instance as Sampler
    . Load up Quanta and whatever other synths you want and control via Drambo sequencer
    . Route external audio to AUM>Drambo sampler. You can then save and perform samples in Drambo or send to Samplr via import files workflow
    . It’s been a while since i hooked up Samplr to AUM, but you might able to do a pass thru to it from AUM (or AB > AUM combo setup)

    Just my thoughts. Hope it helps.

  • As much as I love Drambo it's still too slow for sample-based work-flow...
    Drambo may get some 'Koala Like' sampling features someday but until it does I'll personally stick to Koala for sampling and use Drambo for sound design :)

  • Well it depends on what you want to do Sampling wise. It’s a perfectly capable Sampler in the right hands. For me it’s the closest thing to an Octatrack that i have used on iOS and i will defend that position until something better comes along.

    That being said, Koala and Samplr are also tremendous samplers which i love. The OP had a request for what’s out there and could be suitable for his proposed live scenario and i provided a possible workflow solution.

    Don’t be so quick to dismiss what Drambo offers. Not everyone needs the granularity you seek in a sampler. Sometimes enough is good enough when we’re making music and those constraints allow us to make great music via our innate creativity.

    We have so many great tools on iOS. It’s good to know what works and can help to make the songs we have inside us sing out loud to the world 🙏🏼💕
