Studio monitors
I'm looking to upgrade my studio monitors. Essentially I'm looking for bigger, louder, cleaner and able to handle any of the synth and bass guitar frequencies I feed them.
I've checked out the Yamaha HS8, M Audio BX8 and JBL LSR308. The powered speaker set up allows me to eliminate the power amp and (obviously) the old Alesis studio one monitors that I now have. Think I'm on the right track? (No pun) Any input from some of the owners of the most excellent set ups I've seen posted here will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for the help.

Can you go shop at a pro audio place? If so, bring a mic CD with a set of songs you know really well (including some of your own that you know the alesises lied to you about!) and play them through all of the ones in your price range. Find the few you like, do some research and then go back a few days later and do it again. See if they're doing what you want (ears change!).
A little laborious but the only way to buy monitors in my opinion. Nothing is perfect and you'll have to get to know them either way but I've mixed on those alesis monitors a few times and never got to know them. No bass! Same thing with my old NS10s really - you can learn monitors but you can't mix what you can't hear.
Thanks @syrupcore. Actually I did a side by side comparison and of course you're right, everyone's ears are different. I really don't find the process laborious, it takes me so long to pull the trigger on a purchase that by the time I'm done I'll know everything about the product.
I was just wondering if anyone has had personal experience with any of the three monitors I mentioned. I have never owned powered monitors before so this is new territory for me. The Yamahas seem to be the forerunners so far.
I haven't heard them myself, but I have a few clients who have upgraded from the Alesis M1's to the HS8's and been really happy. I haven't heard them myself, but a few of us were joking that it seems to be a common route for some reason.
How much do you want to spend? Maybe there's some other options out there that are better but not on your list...
I use the JBL LSR305 and am very happy with them. Some reviewers like them more than the larger ones. May add the matching subwoofer at some point but bass does sound good on these
I was on a budget so I opted for the M-Audio BX5, but I shopped around which ones to get and it was almost unanimous over at TheGearPage that those JBL's are unbelievable. The KRK Rokkit's are nice too - I was looking at the one with a 5" woofer, but I believe they have larger ones.
If you are on a budget, check the m-audio studiophile av40. Nice clean sound.
Sorry Ben, I missed that. Never tried any of 'em.
+1 for the JBL LSR series. I have a pair of last year's models, and am very happy with them. Got them on a hell of a sale too.
Thanks for all the input. I'm not exactly on a budget and I have decided to splurge (a little). @Tarekith: if you don't mind, what are the monitors on the speaker stands in the photo from your February 22nd post on the iOS setup discussion?

The smaller ones are Event Opals, which I'm currently selling for $2k+shipping if anyone is interested. The larger ones are custom Tyler Acoustic D2x's.
