“Deathbed” @joyce_road_studios (new song)

“Lying On My Deathbed”
“Will I Say Things I’ll Regret”
“I Can’t Remember To Forget”
“To Keep The Secrets In My Head”

I was messing around with some guitar chords the other day and got an idea for a song. I ended up recording and mixing this in one day. It’s not really in line with what’s posted around here usually, but the reason I’m posting is because this was strictly an iOS endeavor, and I’m proud of that. So step into this time machine and take a ride back to the ‘90s!

Here’s a list of the tools used and the process, in case anyone wants to know.

Vocal chain:
Virsyn Emo Chorus “Huge Choir”
MixBox “Edgy Vocal”
Nembrini Delay 3000 “1-2 Ducking Filter Delay”

Rhythm Guitar:
Overloud TH-U Mesa Boogie Mark V “Tweed Clean”
Overloud TH-U BHS Soldano “Luke Seventh One”

Lead Guitar:
MixBox “Modular Guitar Amp - Lead 1”

Bass:
GarageBand “Picked Bass” played on keyboard with Nembrini Tube Screamer

Drums:
a couple of spliced GarageBand drummers “following” the guitars

I used Auria Pro and GarageBand to record, and Auria Pro for mixing and importing stems.

-Mixing in Auria Pro-

Drum bus:
MixBox “Acoustic Glue Drum Bus”
Auria Pro “Drums Massive”

Bass bus:
MixBox “Large and Fat”.

Vocals:
Auria Pro “Dark AccGuit” (took the edge off)

Master strip:
FabFilter Pro•Q3 “low cut”
FabFilter Pro•MB “strong mids”

This was mixed down and re-imported into Auria Pro as a single track. Finished off again on the master strip with FabFilter Pro•Q3 “Subgroup Sorcery” and FabFilter Pro•MB “Dynamic Goodness”.

Gear:
1992 Peavey Predator (USA made Strat copy)
Shure SM-58
Apogee Jam plus

The End.

  • Time machine works great! Thx!
If I had known that I don’t need 200 apps to set the mood :)

  • This music sounds like a Spanish Hotel room was involved.... weird, right?

ha I did record this in a Spanish hotel room. I wish I had my p-bass with me, would have recorded a real bass part. I spent time trying to remix and repan and make individual drum stems, but I gave up and left the track as is. Just too time consuming and bad for the ears. That being said, the tools we all have on iOS are not only professional grade, they are inspiring.

  • REALLY good. You’re right about us having pro tools on the iPad. Are you pitching the vocals up or just using the emo chorus to thicken a falsetto? The sound is captivating

Quarantined nearby, have a PCR on 2/9 which is 6 days post airplane. My mother in law and her boyfriend are at the house and they’re in the high risk age group which is why I can’t come back right away.

Great question. There was some pitch shifting involved, but the reason is not what you think. I was recording in the middle of the night and put down a quiet scratch vocal. I applied the GB chipmunk, and after processing with the plugins, I heard a magical Neil Young type sound, and keeping it was a no brainer. I do sing in that range but saw no reason to waste time wailing away. When I heard the result I thought “holy shit this is compelling”. The key is knowing how to bend the notes and pitching them just in the right spot, but if you heard the original vocal track you’d laugh. Sorry to ruin it for you.

Virsyn emo chorus was definitely a secret weapon, but the Nembrini Delay3000 really made the song with the swirling paranoia lyrics.

After weeks away from home, I love coming home to my mother-in-law. YM-i-LMV.
But maybe the boyfriend is good company.

Actually, no and No. but what can you do...

  • Your guitar sound is epic... did that guitar arrive in pieces and get assembled in the Hotel?

Yes. That’s the great thing about bolt-on necks, you can take them apart and put them in a luggage. The neck was wrapped in a jean pant and the body wrapped in a sweater, but the luggage was covered in protective bubbles as well. While in Barcelona I installed new locking tuners (Hipshot), a new GraphTech nut which I filed to the gauge, new saddles, Callahan stainless steel trem block and string tree. I think the massively heavy trem block added the most to the sound. Those USA predators have INCREDIBLE feeling maple necks, you can find the early ‘90s ones with the script “Predator” logo anywhere from $100-$400. Decent pickups too. Of course I spent time getting the action/intonation just right.

  • Didn't you start buying extra guitars to be able to compare TH-U amps with Tele and Strat set ups? Are you ready to publish any findings?

  • Damn, that was pretty heavy @JoyceRoadStudios! Very impressive!

Thanks for all the audio track engineering info. I wish more forum members would do the same.

  • @JoyceRoadStudios : that was great! Performance, mixing, composing, sounds. Kudos.

Thanks! I really wanted to go further with the drums to isolate each component as stem and mix and pan individually, but I lost patience. GarageBand drummers do a decent job of following the song and can be tweaked to taste, but having just one stereo drum track is a pain because you can’t mix the cymbals and kick separately for example. I double tracked and panned the guitars of course. it’s not a complex chord progression, but I’m proud of it, there are a couple of dense chord textures that really work. Got lucky on the vocals. I could spend another month remixing it but why, it’s a fine “demo”. Thanks for listening!

I have found that some Rigs sound muffled with humbuckers and really open up with single coils, and other rigs sound anemic with single coils and really roar with humbuckers. But overall I gravitate towards 5-6 rigs that are great with both. It’s really about the capture of the rig and the exact amp specimen that was used for the capture, more than the guitar. Some of the higher gain stuff really doesn’t work with lower output single coils, but it’s like that with real amps too. And yes I now own way too many Strat copies, but I’m upgrading and reselling most of them, just for fun. If I can keep myself down to 3-4 axes my wife will be happy. Though she doesn’t know I just won a Randall RG8040 amp at goodwill for $90 and it’s already shipped... 😬

I will reiterate that the Choptones and BHS rigs are of a higher quality, richer and fuller, and the remastered cab sims are an improvement. Looking forward to the next th-u update for the Fender twin, and perhaps not tomorrow but I do think an IR loader is coming...

    EDIT: IR Loader is here!!!!
