All Instruments In One DAW?

edited April 2014 in General App Discussion

I've searched the threads looking for step by step instructions only to get a headache. Can I use i-funbox to extract all instruments from one app and install them into another? Example: remove all instruments from SampleTank and put them into SoundFont Pro? I think I recall Doug saying he extracted his instruments to AudioShare but I'd like them to be all in one DAW. Thanks

The many iOS DAWs have many different instrument formats, or file types, and for the most part are proprietary, in the sense that one DAW won't load another DAWs instruments. There are exceptions to this -

1 AB2 and IAA allow u to access one DAWs instruments with another DAW in real time and also through sequencing via MIDI

2 some DAWs instruments are .wav-sample based and allow u to ship in samples to build user instruments and kits in-app. The DAW Beatmaker2 is an example

3 there are at least 2 DAWs that load soundfont format files/instruments, Caustic and MultiTrackStudio. Caustic also affords u method 2 above, allowing users to build their own instruments with .wav files...

  • Littlewoodg's answer is perfect. I think that a soundfont player will give you the flexibility you need. Some DAW's (NanoStudio? BM2?) may even have them built in.

  • Thank you! I know I can use AB2, see I'm trying to consolidate my instruments(sounds) into one app to save storage. So maybe it's not just a DAW that I'm looking for. (I actually own Caustic but have absolutely no idea how to load soundfonts.) Maybe I should buy bs-16i?

  • I was hoping to get all instruments ( including IAP instruments) from SampleTank and MusicStudio so I could delete the apps

Caustic and MTS are themselves DAWS that have onboard - and userloadable - soundfont players.

Sample tank and MusicStudio instruments are proprietary. They won't play in other apps. (It may be that MusicStudio instruments will ship to FL Studio Mobile and vice versa, but with different file extensions.)

Caustic is a great app, don't get me wrong, and it's about to become even better when the 3.1 update drops and adds AudioBus to allow easier exporting of its content if you don't want the whole project to be in Caustic. But I don't find it to be a particularly usable SoundFont player compared to the alternatives.

Read this thread if you haven't seen it yet, it was a big help to me:

I'm a huge fan of bs-16i. For as "on the fence" as I was about buying it, it's been a terrific purchase for me. All you need to know to get started with bs-16i and Soundfonts can be summarized in a few points:

    • The app itself is universal, a small file size, and contains a pretty deep library of quality sounds (100+ I think) including organs, pianos, strings, synths, brass, etc. without you having to do any extra digging. If that were all it did, I'd still be happy for the $7.99.
    • Of course, that isn't all it does - it can play any free Soundfonts you find online in .sf2 format, and there are TONS of them. You can browse that thread above to get an idea of what's out there
    • Goodreader is a great app that stores files and unzips .rar and .zip files that you could probably use anyway. But if you don't have it and don't want it, there are still plenty of .sf2 files you can find already unzipped online and download directly with "Open in bs-16i" on your iDevice.
    • The keys on bs-16i are touch-sensitive, and you might be surprised how well it responds on a glass screen.
    • The app is AudioBus compatible, and while the keyboard is decent, it also responds to Virtual MIDI controllers like SoundPrism and Xynthesizer, or arppegiators like the excellent Arpeggionome Pro.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • @LittleWoodg I was afraid you'd say that. I can see them on my computer in iFunBox, I wonder if they can be converted to .wav? Hmmm. Thanks anyways!

@StormJH1 Thank you. I've been on the fence for awhile as well. I like the thought of SoundFont Pro's 4 Zones. Does the bs-16i have that feature?

bs-16 and Soundfont Pro are both formidable apps. They aren't DAWS that can be the receptacles for instruments from other DAWS they're players for soundfonts. Which is one of many types of instrument file. I recommend them both but they don't address your initial wish.

  • Got it. Thank you!
