Swam Brass Walkthrough Pt 2 of 3 video: Horns & Tubas (winners announced)
Swam Brass Walkthrough Pt 2 video: Horns & Tubas (4 FREE Swam Brass apps to Give Away!)
This video is scheduled for release at 2.30pm GMT (London time) today 11th Feb. Audio Modeling will join us in the live chat on youtube during the premiere, so it is a good chance to ask questions / whinge / comment etc 😉. The vid is about 40 mins long and has timestamps.
This is part 2 of my 3 part series on the Audio Modeling Swam Brass Apps. Today I look at the horns and tubas bundle which includes F and Bb French Horn, Eb Tuba, Bass Tuba and Euphonium. I am particularly fond of the bass tuba! Note that on iOS these are available for purchase either separately or in a bundle, on desktop they can only be purchased as a bundle.
In this video I want to emphasize that these apps should not just be of interest to those who are fans of jazz and classical, but to anyone interested in quality, expressive sounds. I include lots of heavily processed ambient / experimental / soundscape type demos of the Swam horns and tubas in use to prove this point.
In the middle part of the video, I compare all 5 of these instruments in various ranges to let you hear clearly the differences and similarities between them at different octaves.
Towards the end of the video I go into detail about how exactly to set these up to be played by Geoshred. This is very useful, as not everyone has a real MPE keyboard or a regular midi keyboard with an expression pedal, and it is far from obvious how to set Geoshred up as a midi controller, or how to assign various Swam parameters to be controlled by Geoshred.
Please remember guys to help out the channel by not watching these behind an ad blocker 😉. Thank you for your support.

Would anyone agree by the way that, of the brass, trombone playing style is probably going to he the hardest to emulate on a keyboard, even an mpe keyboard?

Totally agree

How could you possibly emulate this
It’s a very explicit example though. But It’s Lounge Lizards ey. Mingus alterego band..
But still I asume swam brass instruments are still super useful for creating background noir jazzy moods
Well, nothing will replace a real good player with a real instrument, at least not yet.
I would rather like these modelling tools let me create all these here and between

Another thing is that even with some "famous" guest players a lot of the SWAM demos really do not let it shine as it could maybe. So I ask me sometimes if it still far away from emulation a real instrument or does the player almost have to be a professional brass player to play the SWAM engines (and even here some demos did not convince me really).

It seems little nuances or slightly "wrong" playing really makes it rather sound like a real acoustic instrument or a synth sound any modular can spit out (dramatised a bit maybe).
I think you really need at least a good breath controller and maybe an MPE device on top, plus master them.
That might be as hard as learning to play the real instrument
So one day I see a demo and think, wow, SWAM is so great and then comparing it with those live performances it pretty fast sounds not quite there.
I know samples are just like snapshots but there is still some magic in a samples snapshot all the SWAM parameters cannot achieve.
Sorry, I just always try to see it from different points and Audio Modelling itself does not show always best examples/demos which is strange. Even more that they still not offer their own official demo about SWAM iOS.
Again, sorry for disturb this, I am out now and be silent
Perhaps something like midi harmonica might do a good job?

but obviously you can tell that this guy is an experienced sax player.
@clueless interesting point about whether it would be as hard to learn to play a brass instrument convincingly on a seaboard or whatever as it would be to play the instrument itself. I think for very realistic extended solos etc, maybe, but I think for shorter loops or more ambient playing styles, the mpe route would be easier and convincing enough. Luckily that is more the kind of thing that interests me!
This is a short clip of one of the more experimental style clips from today’s walkthrough - premiere is starting in 10 mins😛
I understand. Its just that drenching these wonderful tools in FX and ambiances is almost a shame but I also like myself to use acoustics and physical modelling for this since you still get often a more organic texture.
I know what you mean, but from the point of view of someone like @iostrakon, it is a shame not to slather them in fx 😂. To each their own haha. Certainly these still sound very expressive even with large reverb, and that is the main thing
Yes it does.
I wonder if there is an option to play multi-tongue technics (like synced double, triple etc.)in these apps I might not saw. I mean something for a not master player like me to fake rather than have to play it in real-time.
I didn't quite get what you are looking for, could u rephrase it?
I do not slather, I drench them in FX 😏
Something like this I mean:
I mean double and triple tongue technic for fast short notes...
Like this here f.e.:
Oh that would be really cool, that's basically the brass equivalent of ratchets 😍😍
Thanks, Gavin. Very helpful!
Thanks Bujar. I think that a skilled player of an mpe keyboard could possibly emulate even most of these things but it would take a lot of practice and knowledge of trombone technique. Main point is that it seems to me it is easier to play the valve based instruments on keyboard than the slide based ones. But I'm sure someone like Marco Parisi could have a good stab at it!
Nice! I somehow doubt that playing one of these is going to get the girls quite as much as playing an actual Sax. This thing is not screaming sex to me 😂
I found these videos very helpful and I’m looking forward to the third one. Thank you!!
Strangely, this second video has the lowest viewing figures of any video on my channel for months. I don't understand how more people are not interested in these. These are one of the releases of the year without doubt, and well worth the price, as much as I wish they were cheaper.
That’s a pitty.
I’m sure this will change soon once people realize the dynamic range of these beatifully modeled timbres, and the possibilities of experimenting with it.
I do hope so! These are incredible instruments and I think most people could find a use for them in their music, whatever genre they are into
Maybe it’s the hardware requirement? Idk...I wouldn’t worry too much about the viewership. Swam has a specific niche, despite their amazing sounds.
Also, could be a combination of other things. Lots more distractions in the beginning of the year. I remember JakobHaq mentioning the winter being the tougher part of his channel.
So, what I’m saying is, dude keep releasing videos on apps you’re interested in. But most of all, have fun in the journey.
I think you have put your finger on it when you say you wish they were cheaper. They are probably out of reach of most iOS musicians.
It's definitely nothing to do with the time of year. I guess it is a bit niche. Cheers though Sam!
Also very likely
That’s my guess too...the cost in addition to the need for hardware to make the most of it. Those are both contrary to what makes iOS music apps so accessible. I think over time they will do okay like the Fabfilter bundle or the MDE compressors. They are definitely a really big deal and certainly worth their cost imo!
Thing is, people don't need hardware. I know you know this @marmakin but Geoshred, KB-1 or Velocity Keyboard are all good solutions, Geoshred being my personal fave. Or just use your regular midi keyboard with an expression pedal. But yes, there seems to be a perception that you need to buy hardware. What does Geoshred control cost? 10 bucks maybe? That's really all you would need to play these very realistically right on your iPad. That's pretty affordable. That and even one of these apps at the intro price: You suddenly have a realistic trumpet or whatever in your arsenal. Amazing.
SWAM BRASS TUBAS & HORNS WINNERS ANNOUNCED
So, the extremely lucky winners are:
Carmine Gargiulo (Tuba)
Oside Nick (French Horn F)
Brook Quinn (Bb Trumpet)
Ben Ctr (Flugelhorn)
Huge congrats, I feel that people are so lucky to have the chance to win such expensive and amazing instruments. They are truly a pleasure to play.
Could I ask how you use Geoshred? I like the application, but I can’t fully resonate with it. It’s designed well, but it’s super hard to make a song. It seems more like a soloist’s dream app, but I keep trying to use it to play chords or notes without the glides (which doesn’t seem to work well).
I mainly use it to play those monophonic swam sounds, either the onboard ones or now the audio modeling apps. For these, I prefer to play with the right hand and use the expression pad with the left hand to control expression. What kind of problems are you getting with playing chords or glides Sam?
