Sampler - example uses?
Was looking at sampler app likes sEGments and wondering if there are good examples of how / when they are used ? Not tutorials on the apps themselves but when / how to use sampler apps within music creativity. Thanks.

You want a trumpet in your song but can’t play trumpet. you want an upright piano, or a drum kit, or a spaceship, or a pitched up warble of wasps... In its simplest form you borrow someone’s recording (samples) and play it in pitch with a keyboard. The sampler, hardware or app, is a tool that places those samples across the keyboard.
You will find countless videos on YouTube that talk about samplers. What will be meaningful really depends so much on your interests and tastes and what you know already that I think you need to invest some time. People use samplers is zillions of ways. And what "sampler" means varies a lot -- everything from multisamplers whose job is to let you play 'realistic' virtual instruments created by sampling the notes of real instruments to MPCs and their ilk.

Thanks all. So was think of Audiolayer or Chameleon. Want something that can do layers and is AUv3. Any other apps to consider b4 I buy
DigiStix is also multi layer (up to 5 per pad) if you're looking for something more like a drum machine style sampler.
AudioLayer is the king if you're wanting to build up multi-layer instruments rather than a sample mangling - banging out beats workflow. It can be a bit daunting to work with at first. And the interface for mapping samples is a pain in the ass. But if you get past that, it's truly a mighty beast. I mostly use its auto-sampling process, or I import samples with the right naming convention so that they auto-map. This cuts down on my frustration with the interface.
Just been watching a few of these - they’re awesome, thanks for sharing
I think the option of mangling would be useful plus layers. Is there anything out there that does both? SEGments?
I know it’s not AUv3, but the more you mention that you’re looking for, the more BM3 seems to fit the bill.
Can I get bm3 to sync to AUM? Bm3 seems more than just a sampler, but perhaps I could utilise its daw type functions. I have AUM projects that comprise of generative stuff with synths and want a way to not only record but then automate for a final mix. Was thinking of rendering the audio and exporting to logic on the Mac but perhaps I could use bm3 for this. Still trying to work out how it integrates into AUM and how I’d use it in my workflow which I’m still figuring out too!
So what I typically have is a load of channels in AUM and want to be able to capture each output then automate volume etc and add additional samples etc
Can I record separate AUM tracks into separate tracks in bm3?
FRMS is very interesting as well... might be good to have in your arsenal. 4 layers per patch... “granular” but almost works as a straight up sampler. From my research it does seem to me that the sampler in BM3 is the best (IMO) but I haven’t embraced it because I haven’t looked at DAWs yet.... just messing around in AUM on my iPad (and solidly in love with Logic and Alchemy on my iMac)
But in response to how do you use sampler apps within music creatively... for me my music is 95+% created from samples I’ve recorded. It’s about wanting to coax the potential or showcase the essence of things you hear around you... Whether it’s the creaking of a dock, the hum of a hotel light fixture, or the rhythm of an escalator you rode. So for me they are the source of unexpected sonic textures or dramatic audio moments... I don’t know. Other people are about drum loops or vinyl finds, but for me it’s exploring the magic of everyday sounds.
So in this piece... it was a compilation where everyone had the same base samples to choose to work from... The primary samples I chose, were my wife sewing masks and a church choir.... which I converted into instruments. There is one sample of subway which was an audio track in itself, but everything else was "performed" with the sampler instruments I built. I like that my wife's sewing machine morphed from mysterious machine, to ticking alarm clock, to ekg machine. The beauty of samples!
The sewing machine sounds were Alchemy in Logic, and the choir was a a mix of Iris 2 on my iMac and also Segments on the iPad.

@stown fantastic piece, love it! That's the kind of thing I'm interesting in creating, more ambient ethereal stuff rather than hip hop beats etc. I like generative stuff too and so I'm trying to find the best way to meld generative stuff created from midi/synths in AUM into a musical form, i.e. to get it recorded / mixed. The sampler part is also going to be key as want also to not rely on the sythns but to create weirdness from random stuff too.
There seems to be many options for samplers and at the moment segments does look nice and easy to use as a starting point. I can always add another sampler down the road I guess if one offer something extra (the borderlands granular looks very inspiring for example).
So the bit i'm struggling with the moment is how best for me I can get the AUM stuff into a 'DAW' or more generally get the various tracks, samples etc into a structure.
You can drag files you recorded in AUM into BeatMaker and use BM3's automation for mixing.
Thank you for the kind words @NimboStratus! Good luck with figuring out your workflow of AUM into the DAWs. I’m not there yet (to an all iPad setup) and to date have just jammed into Logic where I record as an audio track.
I would also recommend Samplr!! Not as your main sampler but to complement it along with Borderlands. Good luck and post a piece! (please
)
So just use BM3 to arrange the recorded tracks? Seems crazy there isn’t a multitrack record app for AUM!
