So sad message. One of my favourite. one song comes to my mind:

  • What a shock, he seemed forever young somehow

  • Here's a few favorites:

This is probably my favorite composition of his - and it's a BLAST to play:

And this is most likely my favorite of his performances. The track is like race between him and Fleck - the musicianship on display here is simply astonishing:

Damn, Chick - you'll be missed.

  • Oh nooooooo!

  • A moment of "Crystal Silence" for Armando "Chick" Corea:

Where do Scientologists go when they die? I'm not paying to find out.

Chick Corea Akoustik Band in Tokyo, 1992

Um, that's Vinnie in this thumbnail image, not Chick

  • Saw him perform only once at the Saratoga Jazz Festival. I remember being blown away...

  • I was a kid when I saw this video. I instantly became a fan of jazz fusion. It didn't matter that Scott Henderson looked like Screech from Saved by the Bell or that it wasn't even him playing on that rack. I know he did other music and all but this video changed my life.

Since we are talking about $cientology, I imagine they go to probate court.
    Rest In Peace

  • I have always loved Chick’s music and groups he put together immensely... I suppose he has finally returned to forever...Love and respect R.I.P. Chick

  • Sad news. I had Spanish Heart on record and used to listen to it frequently.

Fun fact: He’s actually of Italian descent. There was a huge flame war on this on Usenet back in the 90s. Everyone assumed he was Spanish.

  • Romantic Warrior was my introduction and gateway to fusion. That path lead to about half of the music I've listened to for most of my life -- huge impact on me personally.

  • For me, Where Have I Known You Before was my intro to Chick and Return To Forever and is still my favorite. His first solo piano improv on that record (Where Have I Loved You Before) still kills me. That record has a ragged raucous intensity , a balance of virtuosity and emotionality that is so moving to me.

Yeah, I didn’t think that that meant he was Spanish. I guess other people thought differently. For some context, I was born in 1985 and obtained the record in 2009 due to my Aunt saying hey if you want any of these records take them. I definitely listened to records as a kid and teenager. At that time I got the record, my then roommate was a record fanatic and it was the only media we had at the time, other than our computers and CDs. My Spanish Heart was one of my most played records during that time.

  • First time I heard about Chick Corea was one of the demo tunes for the Yamaha SY99...
...the ‘Hi! This is Chick Corea and this is the Yamaha SY99’ still echoes in my brain from time to time...

  • R.I.P

    A brilliant pianist/keyboardist.

  • Can't believe I missed this. Fantastic pianist but also a great composer. RTF one of my favourite bands. This is a great video of him playing with Hiromi...

  • I spent many hours in my late teen years camped out with Return to Forever records. This news hit hard.

  • I didn’t know he was sick, very sad news. I saw some comments about Stephen Colbert’s band playing “Spain” last night on the show (well, the Covid way) with RIP next to them, shocked.

Is it just me, or does it seem like we're losing exceptionally talented musicians at a far greater rate than they're emerging?Hopefully it's just me not being aware enough of newer artists. I think it's time I started to expand my gallery before my heroes are all gone.

When it comes to technique, players today seem to develop a lot more quickly than they did back then. But the major advances in music since 1980 or so have been more in production and engineering than musical content.

  • @wim I think it comes down to where you look and what your definition of exceptionally talented is. But yes, it does feel like a whole lot of heavyweight artists/musicians/actors/writers have been leaving us recently. It's hard to watch folks who were staples of my childhood and incredibly important to me go away - it feels like I'm losing a large portion of my childhood.

Christopher Plummer, Cloris Leachmann, Eddie Van Halen just a few months back, now Chick. It's a very strange feeling.

  • Thank God for video. At least we have that to keep some of these treasures alive.

I don't think I've been as happy in the last year as I was the other night watching "BB King - Standing Room Only" on Amazon Prime. I could not stop smiling the whole time.

  • R.I.P. Chick you were a legend in your own lifetime !

Hear how he passed the audition for Miles,

Return to Forever was one of the many "Fusion" bands that were formed after their leaders graduated from the Miles Davis Bands of the late 60's

This album was a favourite of mine from the 70's loved how they could play up a storm electrically and then find peace through
    acoustic tones too.

All the greats are going from that era and it's unnerving to contemplate one's own demise soon too !

"nobody gets out of here alive"

Thanks Chick for all the music.

He was always good, every single gig. One concert I caught Roy Buchanan opened for him. BB was on his toes that night, not to be outdone.

Wow, I didn’t know Christopher Plummer or Cloris Leachman died, that’s sad too. Lots of greats leaving this earth.

  • I was really blindsided by this one. He was very active right up to the end. I was on his mailing list and would get regular emails about new projects and releases. Definitely one of the top influential artists for me in my era coming up. We’ve lost a lot of great artists in recent times, but this one really hurts.
