Small reverbs specifically

Firstly, apologies for another reverb thread.
Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for reverb apps that excel (or at least try hard) at smaller spaces? I have the ddmf one which can sound decent at times but doesn’t allow parameter automation. Any suggestions appreciated 🙏🏻

  • Convolution reverbs tend to have more realistic early reflections than algorithmic ones, so you might want to look at a convolution reverb such as Impulstation or THAKFNAR.

Alternatively, another exceptionally good option is Virsyn's AudioReverb, which uses convolution for the early reflections and algorithmic for the late ones, giving the best of both worlds (realistic early reflections but without a huge CPU hit). Audioreverb actually excels at both small and large spaces:

  • Excellent suggestions, thanks! (I should’ve mentioned iPhone only in my post- my bad -although think THAKFNAR is the only iPad one). Virsyn is sounding like a winner (don’t have any of their apps yet). Thanks for your thoughts on this 👍🏻

  • THAKFNAR universal 😳

  • I was gonna recommend thafknar earlier, some of the Van Saane IRs are great small spaces. The reason I didn't suggest it was that you wanted to play with the parameters. Mostly I find that with these IRs, it is best to just use them as they are.

Thafknar is universal, it supports time correction to shorten and lengthen the IR and it has a reverse option. Both work very well with many IRs and other processing like EQ etc. can easily be added in the effect-only path in your AUv3 host.

When combined with delays and pitch shifters, no other reverb on iOS has given me such a wide range of reverb effects.

  • I'd like to add a plus for AudioVerb. It has many excellent presets, including small spaces. According to the docs, the short-term reverb is handled by IR, with the long-term algorithmic. And all parameters are published by the AUv3, so open for automation.

  • Mine is another vote for AudioReverb. It is so versatile and does such a fine job of capturing small realistic spaces.

  • I use Audio Damage’s ADverb2 for smaller space reverb. The Size knob helps.

  • Many thanks all. It’s looking like Virsyn is going to be the way to go...
    @jblock - 😂

  • Got it. Well pleased (but will investigate Thafknar down the line). Solved a problem straight away. Only flicked through a few presets but already better than my earlier efforts. Thanks again to all 🙏🏻👍🏻

  • Fab filters pro r has some very nice small spaces.

  • Hadn’t considered AudioVerb till I arrived at this post.
I pretty much suck at reverb, seems I just don’t know what to look for. I open up a reverb, go through presets and sort of like them all.
I like the idea of a natural sounding, general purpose reverb, not as an audible effect but to provide a sense of space. Was reading great things about Toneboosters Reverb, but the IR for short spaces in AudioVerb sounds like a great feature. Which one should I get for natural spaces?. Is AudioReverb light on cpu?.

  • It’s the lightest one I have (using the traditional, very unscientific method - bang a few sounds through it in AUM). I only have few though.
It also did small space better than anything else I’d achieved by a long way (may say more about my skills than the other reverbs I have...)
Happy to recommend. Makes a big difference mix wise having a reverb you’re happy with (obvious I know, but didn’t stop me struggling for ages 🙄)
