Bit of advice requested -- What's the cheapest or most reliable/safe way to pick up an Air3 unit?
So, on the topic of the main drawback of iOS music platform .. buying iPads.
Going to have to do it sometime -- the Mini4 that I've been using for the last 6 years is starting to lack processing punch and feel sluggish/unreliable, and the 16GB Air2 that I've been using for signal processing/synthesis stuff doesn't have the storage for sampling. The Air2 I use is actually still powerful enough for me, but the 16GB storage doesn't cut it these days (had to pick up the cheapest unit I possibly could when I grabbed that one).
Given the eventual necessity, I should figure out the cheapest/most realistic way to make it happen in advance. Probably can't really afford to take a chance on buying second hand or such like as if there's an after-purchase issue I'd likely be left with few options.
I'm assuming that the Air3 model 64GB (that's minimum?) would be the model with a balance of power/storage against cost, and the requirement to me of using a lightning port. Any other models or options I'm not considering? I thought about trying to find another Air2 unit with more storage, and that would probably be the ideal cost/benefit solution right now, but might force a future update sooner than upgrading the model.
Anyway I won't be buying it immediately, just building up my awareness so that I can act in the most informed way when it becomes necessary.
Cheers,
Oscar

Hi Oscar,
Way back in '18, I got my iPad 6 (new at the time) with 128 GB. It's just reaching half full now. Are you sure you'll be happy with 64 GB? Samples and apps can eat storage pretty fast, and it's a pain to have to manage files to/from cloud storage or whatever.
Also, I haven't checked current pricing, features, etc., but are you sure the "Air" model class offers features you need, compared to a base model with more storage?
I always buy my iPads refurbished directly from the UK Apple website. They've always been the same as new and come with the same 12 month guarantee. It's usually £150-£200 cheaper that way and of the 4 iPads I've bought there have been no issues.
Unfortunately there is no availability right now, probably because of the pandemic, but keep an eye out and you might get a bargain on an older model once the new iPads are announced next month:

Hi,
CPU of the Air 3 is the same as the current basic iPad, so from processing power point of view both have the same performance. I have an Air 3 with 64GB storage, while I'm fully satisfied with its performance for music production, I've been struggling with the storage. OK, I have huge number of music apps.
Coming from this angle I would go for the basic iPad with 128GB storage.
I think that’d be enough. I produce on a different machine so the iPad is mainly for performance — capturing/resampling and triggering short samples. Anything longer gets stored on a cloud or a hdd archive for less used things. I’m just about surviving with 16 GB (which leaves about 2GB of space after OS..)
I’ll have a look at the other options for sure though, if it’s possible to get more power for a better price.
I’ll keep an eye on there over time.
Very useful info — thanks.
What about touchscreens? Does either offer any advantage or disadvantage for performance control?
The laminated screen of Air 3 looks somewhat more appealing to me, but I don't think that there is any difference when comes to the performance, responsiveness, or the overall user experience etc.
I think the main difference is that the non laminated screen has a greater distance between the top of the glass and the actual page you are looking at. I’m sure I looked at some YouTube videos - 8th gen vs Air4 which illustrate the difference.
I'll check it out.
Any observations of touch sensitivity/accuracy/response from iPad musicians would be valued, as well as commentary about visibility in daylight/under stage lights.
Cheers!
I’ve recently acquired an iPad 8 128GB, whereas my wife has had an Air 3 64GB for a year. I occasionally pick up my wife’s iPad and it doesn’t scream different.
