  • Turns out the AB panel can't be hidden when it's on the bottom of the screen. I've moved it to the right (over the patterns) so it can be hidden. You can also change the position using the Settings app if you'd like.

Bugs have been fixed and 1.0.1 is being submitted... thanks for your help!

  • Many thanks @benkamen. Really enjoying dM.

  • It does seem like a good variety of instruments and content for a fair price. Haven't pulled the trigger yet, but with news of the update to fix some of the (apparently minor) issues, I am definitely watching. Thanks!

  • Wish this would've been universal off the bat.. I'll wait even if I have to pay extra

  • For what it does, it seems to be a very neat idea. However, like Chordion, the chord structures look to be very basic (although Chordion does have a neat arppegiator feature). I guess I just need more information/videos that show the variety of sounds and, more importantly, how much input control I have over what actually happens.

Figure is an example of a great app that can be a "random music generator", but also strips down some of that automation and lets you control pitch and syncopation. Dot-Melody may very well be the same way, but I can't tell from the information I have now.

  • @StormJH1 You can input whatever notes you want for the chords, and the app takes a guess at what to name it. So anything from a single note to a chromatic scale can be a "chord."

It also gives suggestions based on the tonality of the song - triads and seventh chords from parallel keys.

Here's the manual if you want more info :

  • @benkamen - Oh okay, that is a cool feature. I will look at the manual also and learn more.

  • I bought. Pretty happy with the sounds in their on first impression. The interface is "different" but to just jump in and start creating, it's more beginner-friendly than you'd think.

On thing I have noticed: The fewer dots you play the faster the phrase plays in the given tempo. I've been messing around with keeping them short and copying to the next scene and stringing things together that way. There doesn't seem to be a limit to how many scenes there are.

Is that really the case? When I had 3 or 4 dots, all the notes fit into one measure. As I tried about 8 dots, the melody expanded into a new measure while the bass and drums started over again.

I have to get used to going up on the Y axis making the pitch LOWER! That's backwards from other music apps I have where pitch is represented on a grid. (Also, pitch is on the x-axis in other apps, such as Arppegionome, but it's kind of arbitrary as to which you prefer).

The pattern screen was interesting, particularly the "generate" button, which is like a randomizer, but only with in the number of dots you set for that instrument.

One thing it does do well is allow for on-the-fly chord changes (and pattern changes), and hopping from root to fifths, fourths, etc.

  • I like it, but find it somewhat counterintuitive....

  • I also like the app a lot, really, It's a great little tool for generating melodic ideas. I do have a few suggestions:

It would be handy to go straight to the chords settings by double tapping the chord buttons on the left and to pattern settings by double tapping the pattern buttons on the right.
It would also be nice to have the options of not changing the percussion sounds when switching chords.
One more instrument would be great, and having multiple note chains for one instrument (in other words, having one polyphonic instrument) would be fantastic.

Also, where can I buy th IAP?

  • I have been looking forward to this one since we got teased. It's great to hear you can update to the ipad version for free when you buy it now. I think I'm gonna go ahead :)

Let us know if you like it :)

  • My bad ^^^ :)

  • @Crizzy -- long press to jump to the edit screen for any chord or pattern :)

  • @Crizzy IAP is on the instrument page. Press the MIDI button. Also note there is a lil MIDI bug w virtual MIDI but the update has already been submitted!

  • Thanks for the info, benkamen.

  • Looks fun. Impatiently waiting for an iPad version. :)

v 1.0.1 is up on the AppStore! Let me know how it goes....

    Bug fixes:

Crash on 64bit devices when loading files.

Issues with Virtual MIDI devices refreshing.

Issues with Virtual MIDI output connections.

Audiobus panel is now on the right and can be hidden. Use Settings app to change panel location if desired.

Definitely fixed the file loading crashes on my Air.

  • @thinds great to hear!

  • @stormJH1 just saw your older post and wanted to clarify - pitch is left - right , with lower pitches to the left. duration is up-down with longer durations on the bottom!

  • @benkamen Thanks for the midi fix. dot Melody and Sampletank are a awesome combination.

Thanks @benkamen. Played around a little more today and had some cool little melodies going. Kind of like "Figure", it's not necessarily that the app does anything that other sequencers don't do - but presenting it in a grid interface that basically does pitch correct and quantinization of tempo for you can lead to different timings and combinations you might not have thought of if you headed straight to a keyboard or piano roll.

Two things I struggle with (probably due to user error/inexperience):

    (1) I tend to delete dots in the middle of the sequence when I'm trying to move them, and that basically messes everything up b/c adding a new dot puts it to the end of the sequence.

    (2) The chord editor is cool and works well on the main grid screen for changing progressions, but I had chords in my head that I couldn't figure out how to program in dot-Melody. I suppose I could have found a keyboard or guitar and figured out the notes there, but I don't want to go outside the app. Maybe in future versions setting a note or chord in the editor will play a sample out loud so you can hear what you're programming.

  • Cool thanks for the suggestions - I'll see what I can do to minimize accidental double taps. Worst case, you can rearrange the step order in the pattern view.
I'll think about the chord editor too-- I have some ideas floating around about that one...

  • Hi @mgmg4871 how are you managing to get Smapletank working with dM? I still get no sound even after the update. Thank you.

  • @pisadaan Remember you have to open Sampletank, and go to parts, then set the midi channel on A, B, and C, if you are using 3 different instruments. Change channel on each instrument by tapping each channel number in upper right corner. You then have to touch each of the 3 parts simultaneously until they are all highlighted in red. Go to dot Melody, and choose midi for each instrument, and select the channel for each instrument associated with channel you set in Sampletank.

  • @mgmg4871 Thank you very much for the clarification, much appreciated.
