And Laura Swam

A little disappointed not more tracks posted with the wonderful SWAM Brass. I guess the interest in acoustics is not as great here compared to synths. Personally, I like messing with both. Here, a combination of Flugelhorn and Euphonium. Plus 2 tracks House Mark1, and BASSalicious acoustic.
Starting to use compression and heavy reverb on the horns.

  • Damn this is awesome mate. Jazz perfection. What app did you use to sequence? :)

  • Nice job! 🙌

What horn is the first one?

@jwmmakerofmusic, thank you, my friend. I only use Cubasis3.
    @ChrisG, thanks, it’s the Flugelhorn.

  • I think you have to shell out on them first...

  • I'd love to hear this one re-rendered with Ravenscroft for the keyboard. The House Mark1
is just too muddy for your harmonic density.

That Fluegelhorn is simply stunning and your lines are suitable for some jazz student to
transcribe for creative lines and scale selections. They say transcribing solos is the best
way to learn how to think in jazz terms mostly because you have to really listen to capture the notes and the rhythms at work and it developed the ear while imprinting the ideas deep into the brain.

I do hope to hear Laura with the grand.

Well you're a god with using Cubasis 3 mate. :) I wish it had an internal synth like Obsidian, or that Obsidian were an AUv3. I think it would be perfection then.

I wish that NanoStudio 2's Obsidian Synth were an AUv3.

And I wish Auria Pro's Lyra Sampler that can import the 24-bit Salamander Piano SFZ
and "disk stream" it was also released as an AUv3 app.

  • Great piece @LinearLineman!

I’m still working on acquiring a few select swam brass instruments myself. And I’ve been super busy. I probably have a half dozen unfinished projects.

I'm also surprised by the relative lack of interest in these, as I have posted elsewhere. But I'm even more surprised that Jezebel, Nora and the other chicks from your harem are just idly standing by while Laura swims in to take their place.

  • Wow the sound when the horn first comes in. So good.

I think a lot of people are trying to save - the interest is definitely there. An “instrument” at $20 is different than a synth you can use in multiple ways, or an effect that you can slather on many different projects. I don’t think a lot of people would say “yes flugelhorn” on every project.

I’m grateful for these demonstrations of the instruments, and absolutely interested.

  • Yes a great track @LinearLineman , funnily enough I really liked the piano playing on this + the sound of the piano (sorry @McD ).
I think the perceived or real lack of interest in SWAM is as you all have said, limited sounds at a relatively high cost. Personally I really like them and think the costs are fine.
In the same vein I am always amused by the relatively few views / comments on posts such as this one and indeed most of the Creations, compared with e.g. What Fun Synths... or How do you connect grommet A to Widget B via CC x type posts. I get the most pleasure out the creations and information from their associated comments but I guess we are all different and all viewpoints / interests are equally valid✌️

  • Well stated @GeoTony. I do enjoy the creations posted by yourself, @LinearLineman and others using the great tools we have available on iOS. The swam instruments are amazing. I currently have the Trumpet and Tenor Trombone. Still grappling with using them with tc-data.

  • Always fun to hear you blow on a great old standard. What is your second-favorite swam brass? I have trumpet; am blown away by it. I want yo get one of the lower horns but have yet to decide.

The trombone has bite and the Euphonium has mellow.
Just like the trumpet vs flugelhorn comparison.

The French Horn has the hunter's horn sound... like it's coming from a distance due to the hand muting technique. The bell point away from the audience and the player inserts his hand into the bell to mute what otherwise would be a very tricky instrument to land on the right overtone/partial since the tubing diameter is very narrow.

Then there's the tuba... great for bass lines.

All the others in the line up are slight tweaks of these 4 choices.

The trombone is the most dominant jazz instrument of these options. When you go down an octave you appreciate the extra bite of the cylindrical design.

  • @McD, @GeoTony, I originally recorded the piano track with Ravenscroft. However, when played with the horn track it became cacophonous... too dense. The EP algorithms thinned it out a bit, I guess, and the combination worked a lot better. I went back and tried again, McD, but could not get a good result. I have this propensity to play too many damn notes!

@mjcouche, @Gavinski, yes, I agree the price is an obstacle but, moreso I think, this is just not a site geared to music creation, but music production. It’s a good thing, in a way, cause there is not the over scrutiny and criticism found on sites more output created. ABF is more supportive and forgiving. And we have SOTMC, but that gets small attention as well.

OK... never mind. The thick sound I hear is not the timbre of the Mark1. It's good to challenge us with music that's as dense as Pollack's paint. I guess I just like a pretty
watercolor rendering of flowers when the instruments have floral qualities. My tastes
are intensely "mellow" with a hint of "emo" sentimentality.

But being exposed to other points of view can help expand our consciousness. Keep challenging us to keep up with your fertile imagination. I should reverse engineer
your process and listen to the original "Laura" and then follow your road map as you
improvise over that basic harness. Then see how many choruses I can stay in sync with.
