Eventide are “innovative” in their own way.
My feeling is they try to keep focus on a limited amount of features but always very well addressed. They seem to focus above all on sound quality for a “conventional” live musician. Whatever the settings in an FX, you always stay within the acceptable boundaries of what an audience would expect. I respect that and we need also this on iOS.
Speaking of Eventide, I bought few months ago their plug-in Undulator (2.99€). It’s just fantastic to bring any (dull) sound to life, adding movement and a bit of glitter. Let’s be a bit poetic… like the leaves of a tree reflecting or obfuscating the light during a sunny and windy day. Not very discussed here on the forum but really worth trying !

On reflection actually, I think you're right that Eventide are perhaps fairly innovative, I take back my earlier comment!

You are too focused on the iOS platform alone, that’s understandable. Eventide has been really innovative in recent times, not long ago, they made phenomenal SplitEQ, the “ghamecangier” in the field of EQ-ing. 😅

For sheer bang per buck you’re not going to beat the AudioKit Rack Reverb, and yes, the Blamsoft free one is good too.

I can live with Eventide not being hugely innovative, because what they offer is already great. Blackhole is my go-to reverb, and ends up on pretty much everything. Often just the default with the mix turned down a little if I’m being subtle(!).

Other than that, there are just so many lovely reverbs on iOS, “there isn’t one” pretty much covers it for “best”.

Does the AudioKit one use some of the code from the Valhalla reverb? I remember reading that somewhere.

I’m not sure, but have a vague recollection of reading that somewhere, too.

Most of Eventide‘s classic algorithm were developed by a company that‘s today called SoundToys.
Their 2016 Reverb and UM Space Station were developed by Princeton Digital, outsourcing seemed to be common practice with them.

In recent years Eventide replaced (the variety of) custom DSP chips in their rack units by standard ARM CPUs.
Which of course opens up IOS as a natural target... o:)

They probably decided to go only with the H9 series from the beginning. I can only speculate on what their intention is regarding this platform. The SplitEQ port would be phenomenal. Also, just to mention, BabyAudio is waiting with “Smooth Operator” too.

    2023 update?

There is no best reverb would be my 2023 update haha. But I find recently that if I just want very beautiful natural smaller reverbs, which is usually what I want, that MagicVerb sounds amazing and is very fast to use. Pro R is also great for that (I only have 1, not 2). For big reverbs, creative reverbs etc there are just so many choices, Alteza, Tails, Silo, Cascade, Blackhole MD many others all have their own unique features, workflows, strong points etc, imo

I bought Silo and never really tried it. Let's do this!

I was a fan of Eventide in 1994, but is it me or they have the same product in 2023?

I have many fancy reverb, but a reverb I often use is Free Verb or Free Reverb. You cannot create a wall of sound, but when you play an instrument, you don't want a wall of sound.

I will learn more about MagicVerb, thanks.

Yeah, Eventide don't seem very innovative, I don't see them as a very exciting company compared to many others in the iOS software space, but I do like the sound of Blackhole and I appreciate that ribbon controller they have on their apps. Ultratap is another good one of theirs, actually. But yes, they're certainly not doing anything near as innovative now as companies like Unfiltered Audio. Still, glad they are making apps for iOS, though it's really been a while!

The best thing about the Eventide H9 series is its simplicity of use but complex and top-of-the industry reverb algorithms.

If you want a complex Blackhole then pay $500 for Blackhole Immersive! ;)

more complex? i thought its just a dedicated surround version.

  • I did not read thru everything (yet) but is there anything similar to the old lexicon reverbs (i.e. 224] ? I‘m brainstorming if i should/can sell my OTO BAM and the Boss RE 202 and use my 2nd ipad as an external fx and compliment it with a faderfox EC4 🤔 With Outer Space on ios i can easily get rid of the RE but the OTO…? 🤔

  • Imho you won‘t find a BAM substitute in IOS.
I‘ve considered a BAM, too, because the developer took a lot of inspiration from units that I admire (but simply cannot afford) :'(
Some details in it‘s analog path and converters aren‘t easily available in CPU based designs, like variable clocking.
The BAM uses a Spin Semiconductor FV-1 to calculate reverb tails, a highly specialized chip by the ex-Alesis mastermind.

Gospel Musicians' "IMPULSation" has a series of Lexicon reverbs (200, 480X, PCX900), however you can find these as IR files all over the place for free if you already have a convolving reverb and you can load them up yourself.

  • They should really emulate these old reverbs, lots of vintage synths and delay remakes. Reverbs not so much.

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Since I acquired TB reverb a few weeks ago that has become my favorite

  • AltiSpace has a Lexicon section with various

Yeah, i did not expect equal quality. Though the BAM is a bit limited for my taste. But it‘s brilliant for what it is, no doubt.

For some time, I tried to acquire the "best" reverbs, until I got some more control over my GAS.

This left me with the following collection:

Please don't tell me which essential reverb(s) I am missing 😅😅😅

Don't want to trigger the GAS again .... Bleass Reverb, you said? 😅

You’re missing out on Cascade 😂

I read some threads in the forum and watched the Gavinski video ... and it sounds tempting!

But I will not get both Cascade and Bleass Reverb!

    Which to choose? ;-)

I don’t have Bleass but Cascade is incredible. The GUI is so well designed, every control is right in front of you in a logical way. This is the reason everyone recommends it for sound design, it’s lightning fast to apply and changes you want. Also the range of each control is insane, from short reflections like a small metal plate to huge deeply modulated caverns. The pre and post filters are very easy to dial. You have total control on everything in a very immediate way.

  • i bought a couple of new reverbs in december but had not much time to play with them a lot til this weekend and my personal favorite is…..snareroll….ALTEZA! BY A MILE!

Itś….itś…SO beautiful 😍😂 Really, i could listen to the reverb alone for hours. Just play 2~3 random notes and it sounds like half of the (ambient) composition is already done 😅 I love the high density (and in this regard its not too far away from the beloved Oto BAM that i sold now). First time i like a bit of shimmer as well.

  • For more 'authentic' spaces, I really like Virsyn's AudioReverb and Altispace 2.

Both could do with a (G)UI refresh, imo (A2, especially). But on sound and and flexibility they're both solid.

  • +1 for Altispace 2.
One of the very few convolvers (or the only one?) with pitch adjustment and IR resampling.

  • 'Best' is subjective and depends on use context . I have most of the recommended verbs here and they all sound good, however I keep going back to Bleass because I've grown to really appreciate their GUIs and I think their reverb is the most immediately useful, especially when building a live set. It gets the job done with minimum of fuss and more than acceptable sound quality.

Mind you, I use reverb sparingly. It's easy to drown your instruments in shimmer, but then you are just hearing the character of the reverb over the instrument. I remember a few years ago when every synth demo sounded like Big Sky, amazing at it was, it was waaay overcooked.

    I couldn't agree more!

One of the first reverbs I grabbed for my iPad, because it was so highly recommended, was FAC Alteza. It turns out I don't really use huge shimmer reverbs, so grabbing the 'best' reverb wasn't necessarily the best choice for me. I would have been much better off grabbing a nice simple reverb with a few easy to tweak parameters.

I've ended up using Eos 2 a lot more, but even that's overkill for me. I usually set it to a short decay, quite dark, and about 30% wet at the very most. Less is usually more when it comes to reverb in a mix.

I really should check out the Bleass verb, I'm a huge fan of their delay and I agree their UIs are really nice.

  • Alteza for the out there stuff with shimmer.

Logic’s chromaverb for almost everything else (turning down the early reflections until it hits the sweet spot) and space designer for nice acoustic samples that need to sound more organic. Usually I prefer algorithmic with synths and fake drums. The guitar amp/pedal reverbs are cool too. I like the springs in some of the amp models. And will use an amp sim on a send for dirty springs. Lovely in 808 snares.

99% stock logic though. And almost always via a send. Rarely if ever as an insert.

I have plenty of 3rd party verbs from audiodamage, Eventide etc. I don’t think I use any of them other than Alteza.
