Good to see this approach has worked so well for you in the past...
It has

Depending on who i am talking to i get what i want most of the time
If u cant deal with a sharp tongue, well thats not my problem.
So thank me for my idiosyncrasies otherwise some well known apps would be a pain to use
Im playing the ios audio thing far to long to not to see what is going on.
Saying MIDI clock sync is inferior to MTC, while maybe technically true, is no reason to abandon it or give up trying to make it work in a particular app.
Clock sync is perfectly usable in loads of hardware, PC software, and iOS apps.
I haven't kept up with this one. Thinking of getting it. I just wanna know, does the thing start alongside Sector, SeekBeats etc via clock sync inside Audiobus? Or does it just sit there doing nothing in the fx slot?
On sector it starts via sync, Cubasis auria and dm1 it just sits there. I've not got seekbeats sorry. I'll try others I have later ... Maybe thesys, soundprism & nxt ? Not sure what else I have with clock out.
I'm not sure what it does sync with apart from Sector? Are there any beta testers who can shed any light on what they had success with?
Yep just read the review over at Musicappblog , and the clock sync with external apps is a bit hit'n miss (works with Loopy, but not Cubasis and so on). But the review also points out what's already been touched on in this thread, that midi clock sync in iOS land is a minefield.
It is tempting, looks like fun, I'll probably just grab it
A minefield that dozens of apps have successfully navigated...
Quite honestly, Sector is one of the only iOS music apps that has worked properly from the get go for me in terms of sync/transport and clock. There may be others, but in my experience, Mr. Liljedahl is doing something right.
And thank you to @dreamless for chiming in with some technical info. on IAA, sync, etc.
While IAA sync may be the path Apple has chosen going forward, ignoring MIDI clock/sync and transport would be beyond foolish. MIDI clock is far from dead and MTC is not "standard." I've owned a lot of hardware and software synths over the years, and MTC is not something I'd consider a standard feature. One almost never has to be concerned about whether a synth will at least receive MIDI clock (sending it is a separate issue), whereas MTC is rarely included.
I'm not trying to antagonize anyone, certainly not app developers, but it's important to consider how musicians actually use the apps that are created, and to provide options. Yes, from a technical standpoint MIDI clock might be sloppy and a PITA, but between not including MIDI clock at all and stating that IAA sync is preferred while including MIDI clock as an option, I'd take the latter every time. Crap timing or not.
(and these thoughts don't even get into the pitfalls of working with IAA at the moment, which I'm not optimistic Apple will address any time soon)
We've seriously high-jacked @evilbird 's thread, so maybe those that are interested in discussing could continue elsewhere...?

i need to correct this statement: Sector works flawlessly with IAA. I can't seem to get it to start/stop through MIDI (when it's in AB). Will investigate further. And perhaps pester aforementioned Liljedahl. :P
Latest tests are Thesys, Electrify nxt and Beat machine. Sadly no start of sync with any of them.... Just sitting in fx slot bug not starting.
As a control test Thesys and Beat machine work fine syncing Effectrix. Nxt, however does not.
@papertiger SECTOR only sends start/stop/clock, it's not receiving. (But that will come later down the road when I find the time for it!)
I'm quite sure SECTOR's clock output is extremely stable and accurate. Devs: please make sure to look at the timestamps of incoming clock ticks, you can't just look at the time they arrive (because that would never be accurate).
Hey all, been a bit swamped but just getting back to this thread. I'm still gathering information on which apps aren't syncing with bS, and talking to some other devs about how to navigate the 'mine field'. @papertiger, I'm interested in your remark about Sector being a sort of gold standard for iOS midi. I just made his acquaintance (not IRL), so perhaps he can be of assistance in correcting the sync issues in bS.
@skoptic I'm contemplating what I want to do with the stepper controls going forward. The release version of bS is actually the third version I built from scratch, so in a sense I'm still learning how to use it, what I like and what could be better. I know that this version is by far my favorite, and that it plays into my own creative workflow pretty well. Every time I use it, I try to make a note of any aspect of the design that gets in the way of creative flow. I'm definitely going to implement the sort of 'quantize' you mentioned, which I would call 'snap-to-grid'. I'd also like a copy-paste function for the steppers, as well as a better representation of the range of parameter values. Undo is a possibility, but it's less of a priority than the other two. But -- big but here -- I am a hard-line minimalist. I HATE cluttered GUIs. Nothing takes the wind out of my creative sails like the long seconds of searching for the right button, or the need to learn a complicated new GUI for every new app I buy. I'm trying to find a happy medium between making the GUI more flexible, while still allowing it to 'breathe' -- but rest assured, I will find it.
@skoptic I must respectfully correct you on one point, the wobble is tempo-synchronized, though I can see why it might seem otherwise. For one, the parameter is scaled from 0-100%, which obviously makes no sense from a musical perspective. The reason for the stupid scale, (no joke) is that I couldn't find a musical font that includes all of the beat divisions the wobble effect supports. Dumb, but true. More substantively, the wobble effect is just an LFO that modulates volume and filtering. While the LFO is always synchronized to the app's global tempo, I chose not to strictly lock the LFO's phase, which could cause audible popping sounds when the waveform's phase resets. Rather, the LFO resets phase when artifacts are less noticeable, like when you change tempo or start/stop playback. Regarding the delay effect, the time parameter is not tempo-synchronized in this version, though the ping-pong (panning) parameter is. I've decided to synchronize the delay effect in the next update though, so keep an eye out for that.
It's really great to see that some of you are checking out the app and enjoying it. I've been working on 'the bird' off and on for 2+ years, so obviously I care a lot about it and it means a lot to hear that some of you are trying it and enjoying it. For those of you on the fence, just keep an open mind and give me a chance to win you over. I'm not really a typical dev, and it's definitely not a typical app. If it's not your thing, cool. But trust your ears, there is more to the bird than meets the eye.
Ha, what a ridiculous wall of text. Sorry guys
P.S. I'm doing a series of in-depth tutorial videos covering specific effects and stuff I like doing with bS. Here's the first, about the pitch effect:
Very good tutorial Travis. Thanks.

+1!
@mgmg4871 @papertiger Thanks! Did it give you any new ideas for using the Pitch Effect? Hoping to get pt. 2 up tomorrow or monday, which will show how to do arpeggios and harmonies. Should be fun!
Travis, I'm thinking about experimenting with sending some chords through the pitch effect, from Sampletank, and see if I can get a progression going. Mad scientist mode. Lol
Update: put some chords in Xynthesizr and ran it through bS. Awesome.
Finally bought this one. It seems like an app that will be pretty awesome once it can sync with anything else then Loopy HD. That's the only app that'll start the "step sequencers" inside this bird. Tried SeekBeats, Sector etc. Nada. And from the looks of it basically nothing else either.
Once this gets sorted out, it'll be easy to recommend. Really cool effects, and I really like the way you just draw your curves onto it instead of jottin down numbers or tuning dials.
alright, i'm in! 50% off sale is too good to miss given the positive feedback on this thread.
and +1 for snap to grid/quantize, etc. of values!
@ChrisG et al, clock sync fix went out to beta testers last night. Waiting to get feedback from users, but I tried it with Sector, DM1, BeatMaker 2, and several others. With the exception of n-track studio, sync was great. I'll be interested to hear if it's syncing with Auria/Cubasis, since I don't have those. TL;DR Clock sync fix will probably be pushed out in an update in the next 2 weeks.
whoop whoop!
- was enjoying the pitch demo vid last night too
I'm actually warming up to this app the more I read about it, but given the total s$%&-show my iPad2 turns into when I try to introduce SugarBytes effects to a live guitar signal, I can't do $10 on an app that says "Optimized for iPad3 of later"
But that's increasingly my fault and not theirs for having an older device.
Pitch demo was cool though! It's too bad because this looks to be designed a bit more with guitar players in mind than some of the other effects apps, which are either for synths or loops and meant for post-processing.

@StormJH1 iPad 2 and 3 uses the same CPU and clock frequency. Only difference being the GPU and the bump in RAM from 512 to 1gb on the iPad 3. So unless you run multiple apps at the same time, where the extra RAM in the iPad 3 will help (and hence why everything with AB says "iPad 3 or higher recommended"), things should run about the same, wether you're on iPad 2 or 3.
I can run the Sugarbytes stuff no problem on ipad2, but Birdstepper struggles...
@Zymos Maybe @mgmg4871 can weigh in on tuning bS performance for iPad 2? My suggestions would be to echo @ChrisG about minimizing the number of apps running simultaneously, or to increase the latency in AB to 512. That said, bS is a bit of CPU beast. I didn't want to make any compromises on sound quality, but probably the bigger factor here is that all the effects (except delay and spectre, at the moment) are true-stereo. That is, each effect is independently processed for L & R channels, which doubles the CPU load. But, this implementation it does have advantages, especially if you want to maintain the stereo spectrum of each effect regardless of its position in the chain. While I'm working on the update I'll look to see if there are any places I can trim CPU.
@StormJH1 I've been emphasizing using bS with guitar mainly cuz that's my primary instrument and I'm a total hack on keys. But you can def use it with synths, drum machines, loops, etc.
@mgmg4871 Would love to hear what you cook up! Thinking I might post user-submitted recordings on our website, if I can figure out how...
