How to set up the Korg NanoKontrol Studio for use with AUM?

How do I set up the Korg NanoKontrol Studio for use with AUM?
Is there an online guide to doing that anywhere on here or elsewhere?

Comments
I'd also love to know how to set it up with Garageband, but am still looking for resources to guide me. I need the simplest guidelines.
Check on YouTube
The master Jakob haq has a video
Just look for him
He has loads of great iPad app tutorials
Great, thanks! I follow Jakob on YouTube, so will be happy to find his vids.
For anyone else, I was pointed to this video from Jakob Haq.
The answers depend somewhat on what you want to use the controller for? Do you want to use it like a mixer controller (moving the channel faders, muting and unmuting tracks, panning ...)? Or do you want to use it to control things within different synths and FX? If so, are the apps you want to control AUv3 or IAA or both?
Either way, your starting point is to understand AUM's midi control section and, most importantly, MIDI Learn. Check the help in the app for a brief overview. But you can also jump right in by adding an audio channel, then tapping the channel name at the bottom. This will pop up a dialog box and you'll see an icon that looks like four faders at the top right of it. Tapping that takes you to the MIDI Control setup for that channel.
You'll see Volume, Mute, Solo, and Rec Enable. You'll also see a blue message at the top that says "No MIDI Source! Tap to connect." Doing so brings up a list that should include your NanoKONTROL Studio. Tap on that and they on the back arrow at the top left of the window. Now, tap Volume, and then "Learn" in the dialog box that pops up. Move the first slider on your NKS and you should see the channel and CC that has come from the NKS mapped to that control. Repeat for all the controls you want to map.
It seems like a lot of work. But once you get everything mapped, you can save that session as a starting point for other sessions.
The process is similar if you want to control things inside AU synths and FX. Once you've added an app to the channel you're working with, you'll see it listed below the channel controls in the MIDI control setup dialog. Tap the app and it will take you to the parameters that can be controlled in that app. From there the process of MIDI learn is the same.
If you're using IAA apps the process to control them is different. Most of those each have their own MIDI Learn system. If you don't know the difference between IAA and AU then just ask.
I hope that helps. Sometimes just diving in with a simple starting point is less time consuming that wading through hours of videos. But everyone is different.

Thanks Wim. Starting out and diving in is definitely my preferred way of learning. It feels more organic.
Midi learn is an amazing feature it makes connectivity to controllers so easy. Love my nanokey studio.
I’m pretty sure Haq did a video on that particular controller, that’s Jakob Haq, Haq Attack, on YouTube.
Since I only use the Rec button for one channel, what are your recommendations to use those for? I was planning on using 'Select' to open and close audio units but that doesn't appear to work (Do you know if that functionality might be coming?).
I was thinking to use Select instead for enabling, disabling effects, but that leaves the Rec button.
I could use it to Disable send to the Track I'm recording from, but it's not super useful. Any ideas?
Select will work to open audio units in aum. Id prob map mine something like this. 16 aum tracks. 8 drums and 8 synths. From the 32 pad section. First 16 could be mutes for 8 drums, then 8 synths. Then next 16 could be solos for 8 drums and 8 synths. You could launch synths plus a multi out drum app from the 8 buttons under the scene button. You could map the 8 knobs for 8 synth volumes and the 8 faders for 8 drum volumes. Scene 2 of nanokontrol you could keep everything the same but you could swap the mute buttons ( as you would have faders anyway for mutes ) For launching effects. This way you can tweak effects fom screen but still have solos for say the chorus of track. Or if you use a drum machine that has volumes on the app itself. Then you dont need to map drum volumes in aum. Then the knobs can be for effects ( a knob for the amount only/mix ) or turnado decimator ( a knob that is set via app for multi affects amounts )
Maybe even just use 7 synths. So you got a master volume, mute and knob for a master effect and some buttons to launch effects apps for the master channel.
You have to use korg editor though. You just make a combo of different midi channels and different cc numbers. Or in some case the same midi channel and different cc numbers.
You also have to make sure midi control in aum is pointed at controller. So the controller becomes a midi controller in aum or for the parameters that are actually aums. Like mute, solo and volumes.
You map apps via aum by pressing the chan number in each channel. The the orange eq/mixer icon.
Just use korg editor to make everything not be double mapped to anything unless you want it to be. For instance different scenes but dont map knobs across different scenes to be different things as they arnt rotary encoders. A volume on a scene, then switching to another scene for an effect will make the knob position of previous movement apply to your new movement/parameter. Maybe ok for something but not for live.
Thanks for your Ideas @sigma79 ! Those are really great! I'll look out for the value jumps as well, tanks. I guess the reason for having 8 Synths and 8 drum tracks is to have a master template that you never have to change, right?
I am in Phaze two of setting up the Nanokontrol, maybe I should skip straight to Phaze 3 and use your suggested setup so I wouldn't have to change it again, but I'll wait ^^
I have my build around Loopy (has it's own sheet in Nanokontrol) with animoog from audiobus in channel one (in AUM), then 4-5 tracks of pure acid, one synth for chords, and recording to track Nr.8. Maybe I'll change it when I get an iPad, or finally get into Drambo and Atom lol. I'm making a screenshot of your comment so I'll remember the setup!
Can I really open an Audio units window in AUM with a CC? Where do I map it from?
With my limited setup, do you guys still have some suggestions for me what to use the Rec/Select button for?
Under each channel in aum where it say chan. Then click the 1st orange icon thats like an eq/mixer. All parameters for aum, app and effects for that channel will be there. You then map to ( show plugin )
I have the Korg nanokey studio and I just use midi learn. And that AUM feature that adds a blue border and lets you assign midi learn by tweaking a dial.
Lol. Just realized I already commented on this awhile back, lol.
Well you guys are great anyhow Poppa!
Do you think I can somehow reassign what value will the NanoKontrol channel knob influence "on the fly"?
You could use a StreamByter script to change the CC#. Assign the different CCs to different app controls. Route the controller to StreamByter, and send StreamByter output to AUM's MIDI Control. You could use the StreamByter on-screen sliders to change the selection, or use another knob on the controller.
@Poppadocrock : As long as an app has midi learn, I take it then that I don’t need an actual computer to use the nano key?
