Irealpro usage?

Hi, been having a blast noodling with EWI and a very expressive saw patch in Magellan (mkirino01)/ iPadOS 14.3/Audiobus/irealpro.
Loading Ewi5000 midi/Magellan audio into audiobus seems to allow me to switch to irealpro and be able to play along with it (even though irealpro not visible to audiobus, non-AU?).
Without using audiobus, irealpro audio dominates, multitasking sidebar is the same, so I'm thankful for the solution using audiobus.
A problem comes with SWAM instruments which are Audio units, I load ewi and swam AU but then when I switch to irealpro the swam is not usable. I resort to using a separate device and small stereo line mixer (not ideal for on-the-go)

I am aware that the problem would probably vanish if iRealpro offered AU/IAA compatibility and the problem lies with this app... But wondering whether there is something I'm missing? Surely two iPads and a mixer not required in 2021!

  • I can’t see iReal Pro ever being an AU. It seems more geared toward using iPad as a Real Book with an external instrument rather than an internal sound source.

iRealPro and SWAM loaded into Audiobus can be used at the same time. It sounds like something might be misconfigured. Here is SWAM Trumpet loaded as an AU in Audiobus with the Sensel Morph playing SWAM Trumpet while iRealPro is in the foreground (works in the background , too).

Maybe you are loading the SWAM standalone and not the AU? If that is the case, you need to turn background audio on in it.

  • Thanks, espiegel, for letting me know you have made it work. I'm still having trouble with SWAM background play, even with care to start with "blank slate" (all apps closed and ipad restart) ...then opening AU swam from within audiobus I find I get no sound produced at all from SWAM... and yet I have no usb audio attached, just headphones out of the ipad. Funnily I can see midi activity being registered in the AU interface but no sound (checked physical volume controls & mixer). Standalones be works as usual, just not in background to anything yet. Anyway, happy for now with the magellan being able to be used in the background behind irealpro (thanks to audiobus).

I understand now the difference between standalone and AU swam and have tried both. I'm not sure what you meant by "allow background audio"?.. never seen that in the options.

And you are probably right, jblock, that the AU operability is not a priority for the irealpro people but it would be so good for us keyboard/wind controller players jamming along happily with our headphones!!

Perhaps show us your setup. SWAM AU, Audiobus and iRealpro have no trouble running together.

I just noticed: you are running iOS 14.3 which has some serious core midi issues. You should upgrade. That might be your problem.

  • iReal Pro's biggest issue for me is the poor quality of it's internal synth.
It's worth the extra time to export the MIDI and load it into a good MIDI DAW
(Xequence 2, Cubasis 2 or 3, etc) and point the "instrument" tracks at some good sounding
targets (Ravenscroft 275 for piano, a good bass and drum sample apps) and
then use the EWI along with the selected DAW.

It takes some effect but you'll get backing tracks that are much better for playing over
and also get AUv3 capability for the critical instruments in the "band".

Session Band Jazz 1 and 2 are also good for better sounding instruments and some
compatibility with DAW's using IAA inter-op. There's a "standards" download available for
Session Band 2 as I recall to save time getting progressions.
