I’m an idiot. I was wondering why there’s a toggle switch in the forums and wondered what happened if I turned it off…….

    Well played, good sir.

I feel like the IAP libraries are very very heavily geared towards film scoring. Which ones do you have and what do you think of them? My first choice would be one of the pianos, but from the demos they don't sound that different from the stock piano.

One of the reasons I bought StaffPad was for doing some sort of film scoring. I have the Cinesamples set and have almost completed the Berlin series from Orchestral Tools. I really like Berlin Strings and CineBrass has some great, realistic samples. I honestly haven’t done much with them yet.

But I think it’s a matter of spending time with them and figuring out the different articulations included. I’ve listened to the demos and a lot of them are underwhelming, not just for the pianos. Then I listen to what others have done with these IAP in StaffPad and maybe the StaffPad team just needed to do better demos.

I can’t comment on Pianos as my plan is to use Pure Piano or Ravenscroft after the fact. I do know that some here have found the Orchestral Tools Piano to be unsatisfactory.

  • @pampalini Cinesamples are considered to be more film score and in your face. The CinePerc percussion set suits this style well.

I don't have any Spitfire but like @mjcouche I do have most of the Berlin, including the first chairs. The Berlins are more subtle and certainly flexible enough to tackle other genres.

What sort of styles are you looking to write for?

I can't comment on the pianos as I'm a bit deaf when it comes to knowing whether one piano sounds better than another and so I have not purchased any. Again, like @mjcouche I would be more likely to score in StaffPad and use an AU piano to play the song, though there are probably some articulations which you would struggle to get out of an AU unless you were playing live.

  • Animoog/Model D IAP
    Koala Samurai
    Groovebox unlock+IAP
    MultitrackDAW 32ch IAP
    Blocswave/launchpad soundpack IAP

  • Zeeon presets are all great, love the pack I got directly from SoundsOfIzrael so that’s not an in app purchase but still good. The Brice ones are great too, and the AB forum stuf as well.
    Drambo Wavetable is 👍
    FRMS wow 🤩!
    iVCS3 unmissable
Model D and Model 15 IAP’s are on the wishlist and I guess Animoog’s too.

    Good recommendations here!

Yeah, their demos are quite underwhelming. To my ears the Berlin stuff sound more like familiar analog recording of the 70s or so, whereas the Spitfire and Cine libraries sound more modern. Problem is I would like to have both ;)

If I were to postprocess, I would use my Synchron pianos. But honestly the appeal of staffpad for me is to do away with the traditional DAW way of things, and would rather have a good enough piano and be done with it.

No specific genre really. I just feel more comfortable with the writing workflow than working with sequencers. I really like Drambo, but how many times can you listen to the same phrase over and over before it gets old?

  • DrumJam’s IAPs are instant fun.

  • Beathawk's Drum & Percussion expansions. Really good collection of samples there.
