Apps that make IOS Music production unique
Hi I’m searching for Apps, which are so good, that someone on an Desktop setup would envy IOS Music Producers.
It could be apps where the IOS alternative is just better than anything on desktop (maybe something like FAC Chorus, hard to find anything better sounding, maybe only the Tal chorus) or something that just don’t exist on desktop.
Comments
Samplr is an obvious choice. Also Rozeta from Bram Bos (along with all his other apps). ThumbJam and Drumjam. Impaktor. Zeeon is amazing.
Btw, you can get FAC Chorus on the Mac App Store.
Also Patterning!
IDensity. Gestrument pro. Seaquence
Sector, Koala, KoalaFX
Koala is on Mac!
You’re going to get a lot of IAA apps in your responses. Unfortunately, very few AUv3 apps take advantage of a multi-touch platform. Most AUv3 plug-ins these days would be right at home on a desktop, with a mouse or trackpad.
With that said, fugue machine is a pretty unique sequencer that only recently got a desktop equivalent (as a module in VCV Rack).
Patterning is a favorite, although I personally don’t use it anymore.
Borderlands was one of the reasons I bought an iPad for music in the first place. Very touch centric, and no equivalents on desktop.
Samplr, of course.
iDensity is on desktop, but the workflow doesn’t look the same.
TC-11 and TC Data is a touch programmers dream synth.
Lemur for custom multitouch OSC and midi interfaces for hardware and software.
Touchscaper comes to mind, as well as this other sequencing app that the Aum dev was involved in. The name escapes me at the moment.
Man, only like one of these apps was AUv3 lol.
AUM and Drambo itself are two of best designed apps I've used on any device. They are quite unique in each of their features and rival their closest desktop equivalents.
Yes, all of @brambos ’s apps. Especially apps like Ruismaker Noir where I haven’t found anything similar on desktop. I know this is very specific but the Mutate function in his sequencers is something I haven’t come across either (although word is there are desktop plugins with a similar feature). It is subtly and brilliantly different from the probability that some other apps/plugins have.
I think the SynthScaper series of apps are pretty unique as well.
+1 for Samplr and Borderlands ... both wonderfully tactile, both so very playable. Being designed round playing rather than programming sounds makes them more instruments than apps. Apart from anything else it's the multitouch interface that sets them apart from most desktop apps - there are very few instruments which are designed to be played with a single point of contact.
ThumbJam
SampleWiz
Shoom
AUM
Bebot
ChowCentaur
Drambo
GR-16
Koala
Geoshred
No disrespect to Koala, it's a great app, but desktop daws (esp. Ableton) do everything it does and more. As others have already said...
Samplr
Patterning
Thumbjam
Borderlands
It’s the device itself that makes it special. The portability and touch interface. The apps, while amazing, can all be replicated on a desktop (plus touchscreen). I’ve had and tried every touch interface going back decades. Nothing really comes close to the experience of an ipad IMO. Even for doing artwork, I sold my giant Wacom Cintiq in favor of a 12.9 Pro + Pencil. Yes, the Wacom w/ software is more powerful, but I find I actually use the iPad more and enjoy it way more.
Can’t commend AUM and Drambo enough. If you’re into modular I think MiRack on the ipad is 100X more enjoyable (and runs better) than VCV, even though VCV has more modules. iVCS3 is pretty amazing and sounds really good. Ditto for Moog Model 15. I might be the only person not that thrilled with Samplr.
