Music : A Creative Process
Music is a unique art form in that it has the power to transform and transport the psyche of the listener. Over the last several years I’ve been working out what my process is and how i approach song making for the music i make. Today i decided to take some of that traditionally somnambulistic states of reverie i am in when composing and begin to chart it visually into a system way of thinking.
I would love to see how others think about their craft and approach it. I don’t personally think in notes or chords as much as i think about it spatially as it moves through time. I thought it might be fun to open up this discussion and ask how others see their craft and maybe take a stab at mapping it out in a visual way.
Here’s an example of what i mean by visually mapping out the way you compose:
fwiw, i drew this in Notability, and if anyone is interested in the page template just let me know and i can post the Notibility sketch book here for you to use (i spent way too many months on building out my Action Method Notebook and would love to see others using it).
As always, thanks for entertaining my thoughts and moments of creativity 🙏🏼💕

@echoopera , forget the music... the graphic is a work of art... I can imagine it framed on wall!
+1 ... just enjoying this expression of your creative heart and soul tbh.
Really worth checking out this Ableton documentary on the Scottish composer Anna Meredith. If you skip to about 11:50 in, you will see her version of what you’ve drawn above:
Oh my beloved God. That is truly beautiful. Thank you brother 🙏🏼💕
Powerful yet disposable- Anna Meredith.
My approach... structure is always limited by ones perception. There is so much out there we don’t understand or able to detect... relying only on what I know feels ignorant, so instead I’m happy to dive blind to see what comes out of it... letting my instruments to take me places
This is how I was taught to compose back before personal computers: Map out the entire structure first (except we’d lay it out on score paper). Then write the melodies, then orchestrate, then make sure all the transitions sound good.
I haven’t done one like that in ages though. Since I started with the ragas I just improvise the entire thing. Which is probably why so very few of my tracks are worth listening to more than once.
