Hey, which of these apps handle entering chords with my real piano keyboard? I'm reading about Atom 2, and it looks like it can only do single notes right now.

SunVox can record MIDI both in real time and step entry.

As of 2.0 it can also send MIDI notes and CC to other AU when running as AU.

And if you need to midi-transpose the sequence just put it inside a meta-module :sunglasses:

Sooner or later we’ll have another updated candidate for this category starting with D…

  • Sunvox always sounded very cool to me but I never got past the overwhelming befuddlement of that UI.

So my BeatStep Pro question is only halfway tongue-in-cheek. I am trying to figure out how much I’m sticking with iOS now. Too much learning curve from all the bright and shiny and inexpensive rabbits I keep chasing.

Hardware has muscle memory going for it.

I might explore my minor first-world musicianship quandaries in another thread.

You can keep Sunvox very simple by hiding away the stuff you don't need.

For midi-sequencing you only need one module (MultiSynth) per midi channel.
Sunvox supports 4 midi busses so you can sequence up to 64 midi channels from one instance.

Here's a short video I made long time ago that does this...

    Cheers!

  • One thing that leads people to Sunvox, despite initial reservations about the UI, is its remarkable lack of limitations compared to so many other apps.

You try various apps, and get frustrated over this app not being able to record your keyboard chords, that app being able to record your chords but can't do this other thing that you also need, and so on....

After trying out StepPolyArp and getting frustrated and then seeing what Atom 2 could do, I finally got around to buying the Rozetta suite.

Sweet! Cells was intuitivel. I got what I wanted with it pretty quickly. Thanks.

For an iteration on cells, check out the upcoming OODA.

Recording MIDI to Sunvox is pretty quick, one you have it set up to receive MIDI.

    1. Open Sunvox and do a New Project. Select Template to load its template project, which will have several instruments preloaded.
    2. Select one of the instruments like Keys2 or Keys4
    3. Go to the Timeline view - you may have to consult a video or other tutorial on how to get to Timeline and tap Rec
    4. Play your keyboard. If you have Sunvox running in AUM, you can turn down its volume if you don't want to hear the Sunvox sound.

When you're done, all your MIDI should be recorded on the Sunvox Timeline as Keys2 or whatever. Tap on its bar in the Timeline to see the MIDI data in the Pattern display (top part of the screen). You can edit the data there.

  • In Thesys this is accomplished by enabling Manual Step in the Action Section
