Free cloud storage... in China? I don’t think so. May as well just post everything you own on Facebook.

It might be find just for datahoarders of samples and loops. I have about 500 GB I’ve collected over the years.

    I share your skepticism, though.

    Thanks @MobileMusic

Dubox - I’m gonna check that out... (edited)

Baidu is not a small company (you can read their privacy policy).

Maybe ok for storing our music projects, sample files, etc.

I’d sooner trust Google Drive, iCloud or even Amazon Drive (only one I don’t use is Amazon Drive, which is available as an iOS app).

Why should that be different for the likes of OneDrive, Amazon Drive, Google Drive or DropBox?

If you want your stuff to be secret and private, you need to encrypt it anyways!

China has no recognition of the supremacy of individual property ownership rights (see what has happened to Jack Ma as a cautionary tale). Property law there reinforces a fundamental assumption that one’s private property is also the property of the Chinese government.

“Ownership rights are protected under Article 39 of The Property Law of the People's Republic of China, which gives the owner the right to possess, utilize, dispose of and obtain profits from the real property. However, this right has to comply with laws and social morality. It can harm neither public interests nor the legitimate rights and interests of others.”

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_property_law#Ownership_rights

If one already lives in China, this might be one of few available options. Incidentally, I’ve been to China numerous times and love the people there. Their government is very problematic, however.

I use those, too. I'm just talking about backing up non-identifiable snare drum samples, not even my own music.

If the content isn’t very important, I could see a person using this as a possible storage option.

Yea I did see them but just wanted to share as well, for quick access. However I now just realized that I might have unintentionally affected your page views and what not, so I’ll edit my comments out of respect for your site and channel. My apologies.

No worries. I was just referring to some helpful Dubox videos I posted there. There are much better sites to post for page views and traffic - if I cared about page views, this is the last site I would share.

Absolutely, and yes, as usual, a government and its peoples are two completely different entities.

There are still some rough edges in their app. While browsing for files to upload through the app, the files are disabled/grayed out in the selection popup. Posted a comment on their app about the issue. Uploading through the browser works fine. Photo uploads through the app work fine in the background. It uploaded 14 GB of photos so far in the background and I still have 1010 GB space left in my Dubox account. If we delete a photo from the Photos app after it is uploaded to Dubox, it won’t get auto-deleted from Dubox.

Also the 1 TB space is from their beta days. The talk is they may reduce it for new accounts in future. Existing accounts won’t be affected.

...and here we are apparently worrying about the climate, setting targets, seperating recyclables, putting solar panels on our roofs. Seems like we all just pretending.

Btw I’m totally including myself in this mess.

  • No storage provider on iOS? That’s disappointing.

    It’s a Japanese company.

Yeah I would be wary of this, every new cloud storage platform launches with a promise of massive free space (even unlimited) and quickly backtracks. Even big names like Microsoft Onedrive (they started with 15GB and dropped to 5). Probably they found that only power-users need more than 5GB and those are exactly the people you want to charge for the service (which is fair, it's a business after all).

For those with hoarder-level storage needs, fast internet connections, and who prefer to spend money up front rather than subscriptions (so... not many people :P ) I can recommended QNAP NAS devices with QNAP Cloud and QFile. Basically lets you set up a NAS as your own 'cloud' (with as many TB as you like) and QFile acts as an iOS storage provider.

Plus it doubles as a Plex server for all those movies you legitimately backed-up from DVDs that you definitely own ;) Private Netflix bonus :P

No, this is a japanese subsidiary of a chinese company:

They are promising in their videos the 1TB storage space and upload/download speeds are permanent for life and won’t be reduced. The talk is by people on reddit guessing Dubox may reduce space in future for new accounts only (not an official statement from Dubox). They might have lost some reputation on their Netdisk offering in China in the past but that was largely due to users storing pirated content and abuse and they had to make some harsh changes but I’m guessing Dubox offered worldwide (except China) will be a success.

  • Awesome, thanks!

Maybe it’s just my upbringing, but when something looks too good to be free, it usually isn’t what you think it is. For my purposes potential security issues outweigh the “free” storage.
