Can You Send A Program Change to FX & What Apps Can Send PC Changes?

I’ve never really used program changes or PC’s before but I found myself recently wanting to set up a program change for an effect in AUM. I wanted to switch presets between a couple different factory presets, in Perforator, every eight bars. I thought you could do this with program changes but I don’t know much about using them and had some trouble when I tried it. I tried using notes as well, but no luck. I was hoping someone could briefly answer and explain...

Can you send PC’s to an FX app, and if so how? What are best apps to send a PC?

I know PC’s are typically used for live performances but I’m thinking in terms of sequencing the different presets, is that possible? ie. 8 bars on 1 preset, 8 bars on another preset, repeat, or something similar.

I’m pretty sure I know how to set it up in AUM, but could use some guidance. Cheers!

    A couple of thoughts:

    • You can't generalize about support for PC in apps on iOS. Some don't support PC at all, and those that do have different ways of supporting it. I won't go into details or this will get long fast.
    • Program change is little different than any other midi message such as notes or CCs**. There's likely no particular reason why you would choose to use Program Change over other ways of selecting presets.
    • AUM and Audiobus both let you select presets in apps whether they support it or not using CC's, Notes, or Program Changes. You may have to save copies of the presets in the host preset mechanism, but it is a simple and consistent way to select presets without having to be navigate the mess of PC support in apps.
    • LK is a good way to sequence preset changes (I don't recall at the moment if it supports PC, but given the above, it doesn't need to).

(** Yes ppl, I know it's quite different because of bank select, MSB, LSB, etc. but I'm trying to keep this to the relevant details needed from the OP.)

@wim Cheers mate. Thank you for that, that’s basically what I was looking for. I saw how to set up the preset changes in AUM, and was thinking about trying PC, but didn’t quite know how to go about it. In some brief research I did see people talking about how much it varied from app to app, so I’ll basically forget about PC’s, and stick with note or CC.

I did try notes, and set up 3 separate presets in Perforator to be triggered by notes 0, 1, & 2 respectively, then I set up an instance of Atom with the notes 0,1,2 to sequence the presets. Then Made connections, but the presets didn’t change. I believe i set up everything in AUM correctly, but let me give it another go. I even moved notes up a few octaves to be sure... maybe CC is the way to go...

Did you connect Atom to the app itself of to AUM's midi control? It needs to go to AUM control, not to the app.

  • Oh. I think that might be it. I sent it to the app. Gotcha.

    Don’t think, I know that’s what I did.

It's also possible to use Program Change with Midi CC, but you need something like Streambyter to convert midi cc to program change. I just tried this with miRack and KQ Dixie last night.

I used miRack to generate note triggers, which then Streambyter converted to program change to switch patches on KQD. More description in my post below. See 2nd video for this in action.
