I need another more up-to-date tutorial on how to use this app now. So much discussion about features in the month or so since Atom 2 arrived.

Actually first I need to sit down and read the outstanding manual! While I'm a visual learner, I find it often best to go into a video with pre-formed knowledge and questions instead of going in blank and wasting time winding and rewinding the vid.

    Which host, controller ?

  • been testing atom in everything. I still don't understand why midi routing is still such a pain in most of the daws and hosts on ios or desktops. it's almost like everyone's trying to hide midi and don't want you to use it outside of triggering instruments in its corresponding piano rolls. aum and drambo being exceptions of course.

Agree, it can be a real pain, Aum is the best for that, Drambo is ok but has some limitations.
With Atom, you can totally bypass the host Midi routing which is absolutely brilliant. Once we get proper ports routing, this will be just incredible :)

Ok, I haven’t followed the evolution. Still have just Atom 1. I haven’t upgraded because I’m content with LK, but intrigued.

With this Atom 2 update, how does it now look up against the coming Helium one?

I see you've already made your decision, but in case anyone else is wondering...

Helium will allow for automation editing on day one, but it's unlikely that it will receive as many updates over time.

When a new or upcoming app starts to build hype, we often see the "4Pockets Alternative" for that genre. Sometimes there's a need for it, but sometimes I do get a vibe of "rushing to release an app in order to compete with another dev"...not to the point of being unethical though. I see Helium as filling the need for a simpler piano roll, that offers automation editing, sooner than Atom 2.

They're both created by one man dev teams, but whereas blueveek spends his extra time refining little UI quirks, adding niche features, and engaging in long discussions to improve the experience of the app......Helium will probably only receive maintenance updates after the first month, and 4Pockets will mostly move onto building something else.

Well, yeah.. I do see that the 4 Pockets dude does seem to release an app, a handful of initial fixes, then moves onto another app. Not sure there's much wrong with that as long as the originally launched app still does what you bought it for.

As for these one-man shop devs... yeah, I try to support them every chance I get. I will say that I bought his Atom 1 app well over a year ago... even though everyone was complaining about some interface issues. He did admit there were problems and put Atom 1 on sale... with a promise that he was going to rewrite the app, but that he wouldn't charge those who bought it again when he rewrote it.

I bought the app on that promise. I used it maybe twice and quickly realized why everyone was complaining about it. But, he did say he'd rewrite and that current users wouldn't be charged again... so I didn't worry about it given his pedigree.

Then, it was over a year until he got the second version done. I understand life gets in the way, and it was a complete rewrite, etc. But, he DID say that if you bought the original... when he released the new one, you wouldn't get charged.

Now, well over a year later.. Atom 2 is finally out and everyone is singing it's praises. Only, I guess he changed his mind about not charging for it again. The bundle is nice, but for me that's still $10. Not a huge amount and I'm sure it's worth it based on all the accolades. I just can't get past the fact he said he wouldn't charge again for it... didn't update the original, and then released a new version that I'd have to now pay $10 for.

I kinda bought the app based on trust that he'd fix the original and not charge again... soooo.... that's kind of a sticking point.

And, since I only used the original a couple times before getting so frustrated with the interface that I eventually just deleted it... I think I'll just cut bait and find something else that's in that "mad money" $5 range that's fun and might provide some new sounds to play with. That new Mynth app is only $5, and there's another delay app that sounds fun. I can't recall it's name but I think that dev has already released a handful of free apps that are pretty decent, so I should likely throw my credits his way.

As I mentioned before, I honestly don't think that I really need Atom 2 anyway. I only got marginally interested after seeing the SoundforMore vlogger guy use it a lot. Looks pretty straight forward and I figured I should use my upgrade discount while I still could. I just didn't know the overall price was going up April 15th. I waited too long it seems. No biggy. I've got plenty of other toys to occupy my time with. :)

Victor seems like a very dedicated developer and his updates so far have looked very impressive. I'll likely pick it up sometime down the road during a sale or when I've got more credits burning a hole in my pocket.

@skiphunt DM me if you want a free code. Consider it my just-this-one-time participation in the “gift an app” thread. If you don’t, I’ll give it (or any other app in the same price Tier) to someone else.

  • I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Am I missing something, or is there really no way to draw velocity levels on each individual note? Like, I want to see all the velocity levels underneath the grid so I can draw in custom levels and such.

Improvements to velocity editing are coming. The note icons indicate the note velocity, btw.

    2.0.6 demo: Pattern Switching Mayhem

    • Blue Atom routed into the green Atom.
    • Blue Atom is the master sequencer.
    • Green Atom is the slave sequencer with 5 patterns. Settings: "Hold" mode, G-1 trigger, "Note" switch source.

    That's it !

In the green Atom, each pattern is just a sequence of repeated notes.
In the blue Atom, the G umbrella controls clip launching/gating. The C to E notes control one pattern each.

Processing your master sequence leads to some unexpected creative effects, especially with slice and flip operations.
I'll leave it up to you to experiment with quantize and swing applied to your song arrangement itself.

Is there a particular reason why the switch source menu isn’t round-robin?

Coolio. I know the note icons show it, but I couldn't find a way to easily change it without opening that velocity panel, selecting a note, moving a slider, then selecting another note, moving a slider, and repeat. Seemed insanely counterintuitive and tedious.

Wowee! I was gonna use pattern switching to arrange song parts within song parts, but hadn’t even thought about using it creatively like this!

    Seriously cool.

Song part inception, if you will.

I recommend experimenting with StepPolyArp controlling atom sequences and patterns. there are some nice features like per note probability and random fill (hope it will come to atom in the future).

  • Great...

  • @blueveek You are amazing! Thanks for making Atom2 the best Midi Editor on iOS! I can't wait to get my fingers on the 2.0.6 update...I think this is going to take my Drambo composing to all new levels!!!

Keep up the amazing work, and make sure you take a little time for yourself to recharge.

    Cheers!

I’m sure it’s a known issue but the bottom ‘move’ menubar is really blocking those lower notes (so crucial for this update) :D

Good point! Generally, I think the proper fix is having user-assignable MIDI values for pattern switching, but the move bar should indeed not get in the way.

Trust me - this update 2.0.6 unlocks massive new potential... especially for the Dramboheads.

  • Love it! I enjoy a lot the sensitivity and precision in inserting/adjusting notes with a midi controller or not. Big thx!

    Yepp, noticed! :)

Maybe it's by design but wouldn't it be a good idea to updated the configuration folder name with the updates? (It's still 'Piano Roll 2.0.3'). I know it's a purely cosmetic thing...
