Are there many users of Lumbeat drum apps here? Got a weird thing happening...

I am trying to select Bank Rhythm and Sound presets via MIDI, checked with Luis checked on what to do, set it up vi the MIDI pages all good, I even have the iRig Blueboard working fine.

BUT, when it comes to selecting presets of those three areas using CC 32 for Bank, CC 0 for Rhythm and PC for Soundset, ONLY the CC 0 command works? Meaning I can change any of the Rhythms via MIDI but none of the others.

Further, I can only get even just this one working from an external controller. Trying to send over the core midi functions of the iPad does not work (I am using Unrealbook, which recognises Soft Drummer as a core MIDI device).

I have tested Unrealbook using AUM Mixer and it receives MIDI data from Unrealbook fine, no issues, but the Lumbeat apps (Soft Drummer, Rock Drummer and Afro) do not. ALL they get is midi CC 0 from an external device hooked up via USB.

Soooo, for any experienced Lumbeat users, any idea of what I may be missing here?

You need to be careful of the name/no-name thing with virtual MIDI. If Unrealbook is sending to "Soft Drummer" by name, then Soft Drummer should use its "Virtual MIDI" port, not "Unrealbook". Or alternatively, if Soft Drummer connects to "Unrealbook", then Unrealbook should send to its "Virtual MIDI" port, not to Soft Drummer. Basically, one side creates a virtual MIDI port, the other side connects to that port, using the first app's name. If you connect them both by name, then each is connected to the other's virtual MIDI port, crossed signals.

Edit: Did the dev tell you to use CC 0 for rhythm and CC 32 for bank? I'm asking because CC 0 and 32 can form the MSB/LSB pair of a 14-bit bank select message. I wonder if CC 0 is confusing your attempt to use CC 32.

  • ahhh, cool thanks uncledave, that sounds logical and its right up there in the " er, duh, why didn't I think of that" category!

I'll give it a try now....

    Nope, :( still doesn't work.

EDIT: afaik there is no option in Unrealbook to "force select" anything...it's all automatic...so the only thing I could do was set SD to what it terms "Network Session 1"

I can actually select whatever order I want Dave, but in the SD default setup it uses 32 for bank (although I suspect it does NOT mean the usual "bank" as we know it.....all this midi control is quite a recent addition to these apps, I am not sure he is implementing exactly according to midi spec.

IIRC, I tried re-ordering it to MSB 0, then 32 and then PC but it made no difference.

fwiw he showed me an image of his system with it set and working from within Logic -

  • Oh and I have tried using JUST one of the commands but even that doesn't work (IE just the CC 32 and a value by itself)

ok, I found the issue - I think. Under iPad settings, Rock Drummer has a setting (user selectable ) for Local Network access. Soft Drummer does NOT have this option.

I can now get these commands to work in Rock Drummer....following the advice above of using the Network Session in the drum app.

  • OK. It sounds like you're probably OK with the CC numbers. Are you able to test Soft Drummer, sending CCs from an external controller (one with knobs), or another app? That would establish your ability to control the app.

The other problem is unrealBook. I'm not clear how it supports MIDI, since that's not mentioned in the AppStore description. Could you maybe try using AUM to route unrealBook MIDI output to Soft Drummer? That way you might be able to control the routing, as I previously described. A little StreamByter script might help if some translation is needed between the two apps.

AUM is unable to get MIDI to SoftDrummer without being routed through something like Audiobus. LUMBeat apps (at least all the ones I own) do not see MIDI input sent to their virtual midi ports. They only see MIDI from the port selected in their MIDI Setup dialog. To get MIDI from AUM to SoftDrummer, I have to send from AUM to Audiobus and have audiobus set to Forward from its virtual midi in to its virtual MIDI out.

You see I DO have midi data going from Unrealbook to Rock Drummer, using Network Session 1 (user selectable under the MIDI page) I am selecting kits beats and styles no probs. I have just been testing it.

In regard to Unrealbook, it automatically scans all hardware and network (iOS core) connections and loads them as out points. So if it's there, UB will send it....no I think the issue is with the iOS settings and the fact Soft Drummer has no option in this section re the Local Network. Hence Soft Drummer (unlike Rock Drummer as afaik Afro) will not get anything over any network, even a hardware USB connection.

  • anyone else have any thoughts on this issue?

    Use Audiobus as an intermediary

  • hmmm, yes I might have to....I am getting it to work (via network) for the Rock Drummer app, so I have sent a message to Luis asking why Soft Drummer down not have the same options in iOS app settings ...haven't heard back.

I suspect the hardware issue is as Dave alluded to above - it's the way the device (in this case Casio PX5-S) is actually sending the data. I mean, I'll be primarily using network MIDI as I want to select drum patterns when I select a chart, but it would be nice to get the hardware side (via USB) working as well.

Network Session is an option in Soft Drummer for me...but one needs to set up a Network Session for that to work...at least in my iPad.

  • It doesn't work as there is no option to actually turn on Local Network in the App settings (under the main iOS Settings app). Rock Drummer DOES have this switch and it works over the network. afaik, network sessions are always available as networking in iOS is always on, again only afaik, I haven't researched it or tested it!

In any case I have now come across another issue and that is selecting tempo via MIDI to the Lumbeat apps.....BeatBuddy (by Singular Sound) have got around this by cleverly incorporeating a "double" CC command so that tempos over 128 can be transmitted, not sure how I am going to achieve this in Lumbeat.
