Spectrum is now open source

Hi!

I've open sourced Spectrum - https://github.com/boourns/spectrum

There's some good re-usable components in here, like an MPE-capable MIDI event processor.

I have a small update planned to fix offline rendering (and add text-entry for knob values @Samu :) ), and sometime in the future may have time to add proper preset management. No promises, as I'm working on other projects most of my time.

Cheers
Tom

  • Thank you once again for this wonderful suite.

  • Fantastic. Thank you very very much for all this effort.

  • Many many thanks for that, Tom!
It's great to have working AUv3 example code for iOS. 👍🏼🤝

  • Wow! Very cool @burns_audio Thanks for creating such an amazing app, and being so generous.

  • @burns_audio This is just Awesome!

Spectrum is like having a real polyphonic MF on the iPad & iPhone even though I've yet to bump into any filter that is as creamy as the analog one on the MF.

I do wonder how many derivates of this we'll see during 2021 :D

    Cheers!

  • I was saying boo-urns

  • Wow, so very generous on top of ridiculously generous generosities. I still use Spectrum all the time since it sounds so great and it's so easy to use. Top notch, @burns_audio!

Yep Spectrum sounds fantastic and literally saved me from starting a modular rack. Now that money was able to be poured into a guitar and synth instead of feeding an ongoing addiction.

  • Thank you @burns_audio ! That is a great gift.
I will be digging into this. I tried and eventually gave up trying to learn AUv3 programming for lack of complete source level examples. Maybe I can make some sense of this now.

And I totally love Spectrum. Always have from the first time I used the suite. B)

  • Thank you for these great apps. I think they are among the most underrated music apps. The UI also scared me away for a long time. Now some bored dev could beautify them.

  • https://apps.apple.com/us/app/synth-modes/id1445358435 is one way to say thank you.

I don’t own any of the referenced eurorack modules but whatever. Spectrum and the work involved to open source it is definitely worth 4 bucks!

Thank you so much for this app, it's one of my absolute favourites!! You are a star!

  • Has anyone been able to use MIDI in to trigger the envelope or the grain Trigger in Granular (Clouds)? I can make them respond to things like the LFO or the Pad Gate, but I can’t get them to respond to MIDI In (tried with microfreak and AUM keyboard).

If it works for anyone, let me know. If it’s a bug, perhaps someone with some coding knowledge can give @burns_audio a hand to figure it out? Lots of patching possibilities are sadly out of reach without this capability.

  • By the way, I’ve spent some time playing around with the microfreak and Spectrum and I have to say I’m very impressed with how the app sounds in comparison with the MF, I think especially because of the true polyphony in Spectrum vs the “paraphony” in the MF. They’re wonderful together, in any case. Thanks again for such a good service by coding this into our world, @burns_audio!

  • Ok, I figured out the trigger part. On the matrix, set “Direct” to “Trigger” and it will work wonderfully. Still can’t get the envelope to do anything. Any help is much appreciated!

  • Fingers crossed someone picks this up and runs with the ball if Tom is too busy.

@burns_audio you're a friggin champion, awesome to do this. I'd still pay a cool ten spot for this app with a slightly prettier UI and functional across all hosts ( seems like I can never get it to render :( ) - still one of my favorite AUv3's of all time.

  • does this till work on the latest OS? im still on OS18 and I don't wanna loose it…

  • I wish someone would make just mutable clouds with all its modes as an effect and optimize it, so that there is less latency when using it. if that is possible

Just done a quick test on 26.4 and it seems fine.
