I ended up in this rabbit hole last night, mapping key to feedback frequency is fun fun fun
Yeah playing with the feedback and dynamics controls can really open a whole new world of sound.
The Nembrini is modelling the Roland SDE-3000, Mad Professor’s secret weapon.
Bingo! I couldn’t remember the model number. Thank you! Awesome, right?
Ill try to do some testing this weekend and see if anything has that real tape echo dirt to my ear!
Not sure if it’s exactly what you need, but I get some lovely distortion out of tap delay and K7D. They are both lovely apps!
I created some great feedback in MiRack as well but can’t find the patch now.
RE-1 is a tape delay emulation with a saturation button. I would assume it can be controlled by a Envolver but have not tried it.
Has anyone tried using the FAC Envolver app in Auria to control other AUs in Auria? I'm confident it would work in AUM but have never tried anything across AUs in Auria.
Also, I purchased K7D and played around with it. It's got a lot of cool sounds but I can't quite get the distortion sound that varies with input envelope. It works to a degree but isn't as controllable as I'd like and the type of distortion is a bit aggressive. I think if I could get that type of distortion that I posted in the clip (I called it "white" noise distortion, but I don't really know what I'm talking about), and control it with an envelope, the K7D would be satisfactory as the delay section.
Any suggestions for an app that can emulate the dynamic distortion in the clip?
I'm also intrigued by the possibilities in Drambo for creating an arsenal of envelope controlled effects. I can't find a lot of information about which effects it has a basic building blocks, like flavors of distortions and reverbs or overall quality of effects. I don't have spare weeks to sift through those mega-threads.
As the desired distortion is in the preamp it should be possible to use a separate plugin for that in front of the delay?
I think this gets reasonably close to the example posted in the original YT video.
One instance of Saturn with an envelope for the transformer stage, then Gain Stage Vintage Clean as a Preamp stage, K7 for the delay (but with the preamp turned down to minimum) and then another instance of Saturn with an envelope for the tape saturation. I turned oversampling to max where possible:

As others have suggested, you may have to use a different pre-amp app (Saturn2 does sound pretty tasty). Just a quick note about K7D: I will often use two of them in series. The second one I use like a traditional delay. The first one I'll set the time to something really really short and turn sync off. Then I bring the Feedback slider all the way down, play a note and then bring the Feedback slider up until it starts to bloom. If you play with the LFO, the filters and the character you can get some pretty unique sounding feedback. Not exactly what you are asking for in your first post, but since you made it this far...
This one should take care of your overdriven tape echo.
@richardyot
After watching those Saturn 2 vids, I’m pretty much sold. It looks flexible and allows for a lot of subtlety.
Why did you have to sell me on a $30 app? 😄
Sorry! But you did ask for an envelope follower, and Saturn just happens to have one
Also I think for the effect you're trying to achieve it's probably the best option, especially if you stack different types of distortion together to mimic what is happening in a real tape delay (transformers, preamp, and tape saturation).
Oh, and don't forget to experiment with the feedback and dynamic controls!
OMG!!! I can't believe I didn't remember I had this awesome Tape Delay!!!! OMG!!! I love it! I honestly think this one has that Strymon Timeline special sound!!!
Seriously, if you haven't yet bought K7D delay, oh my!!!
The preset Filtered Triplets!!! Oh soooo awesome! Goes on forever! I tweaked it for short and long presets but on Dotted 8ths and all I can say is wow!!!! Paired with FVerb or Stratosphere reverb or Blackhole and Shimmer and this thing is unreal!
@sinosoidal So impressed, left a 10 star review on AppStore!
