LK and Atom 2...not vs., but which is what?

I have both, haven’t done the deep dive on either.

For those that know, share a comparo?

(Preferably ultra detailed and even-handed.)

Seems like the use cases have considerable overlap...

  • I would call these 2 apps "King And Queen" of iOS environment...in the end...it would be a matter of taste, which one to use. Both cover similar grounds with different motifs. Brilliant apps!

    Brilliant indeed

  • I've used Lk a bit but not Atom 2 yet.

One thing I've noticed from window shopping is that if you want a bunch of clips on screen, Lk does it Live style with a grid in a single window, where each cell is a clip contained in one instance of the app. Whereas Atom relies on using stacks of channels with nodes in AUM to launch individual instances of the plug in. I think I have that right.

That seems quite a different way of working, and I can imagine it might be more effective for some to use LK to launch Atom clips, as an example of using both. I think it's clear that the Atom piano roll is more comprehensive in its options and controls.

There are a few things that are down to simple preference. The different workflows may appeal differently to different people.

If you do music that is in any time signature but 4/4 at the moment, Atom 2 is needed. They will eventually come to LK, but I don't think they are imminent. And, if you need to record and edit CCs, LK does that now and Atom 2 will get them in the future.

For some people, one or the the other will be a better fit -- and for some (like me), they are both useful and will be used in different situations.

I HATE ’vs’ threads. Even ones that politely pretend not to be :)

Buy both. Support the devs. Leave a glowing review. Realise that making apps is hard work and almost never rewarded adequately.

Then once you’ve done all 4 spend some time working out which approach/workflow/philosophy fits you best.

  • I think the OP and thread title make it clear this isn't that kind of thread. It's about learning the differences between the apps and for which uses one would prefer one over the other.

Yes, they can descend into dick-measuring contests, but that clearly isn't the intent of this thread.

  • I’m not kicking the OP.

I’m anticipating where this thread is about to go...

    True.
I too hope it doesn't go there.

You have to know this question is going to get asked many times when two apps overlap as much as these do. At least this started off (and hopefully stays) on the right foot.

    Only if you hold mine!

  • Atom2 vs LoopBud thread vs the Atom2 vs LK thread 😁
Most will end up buying everything anyway but these threads can be useful to compare features and see where gaps are. I’ve not dug fully enough into Atom 2 yet to know what it has/hadn’t got.
Good idea about the beer though 😊

This thread seems to be degenerating into something else altogether ;-)

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  • Boys, Boys! Don’t make me turn this thread around...

I mean we should, to get back on topic (Oi you two @SNystrom @lukesleepwalker )

  • Coming from an Ableton background pre-iOS , LK immediately makes sense to me.
Create a bunch of sequences in rows, and trigger them at will. Its very strait forward and clicks well with how i construct a track.

Atom is in the same regard only that the sequences are not contained in a single instance of the app, so it’ll require a different type of organization to trigger parts and it seems as if using some thing like a launchpad would be a great friend for this.

Atom seems to be faster and easier to edit and arrange your midi events with many options while LK takes a bit of time to edit for me.
Right now they both are in different places as far as features but both seem to be getting continual maintenance.

I think they both are great and can be used in conjunction or separately depending on where the track is going, at the end of the day it all depends on how you want to play thru the clips that determines how i start

  • Both are great 👍
    I have both.
    Support the devs!

  • ...everyone works differently, it’s like only wearing Nike shoes. I personally like Adidas, Puma, Brooks, and ASICS too. There will be times LoopBud we be the hero, times when LK swoops in, and times when Atom 2 saves the day!
