External Midi Syncing Riffer to Mainstage

Hello! First time poster here, new to iPad music creation.

Top level of what I'm trying to do is send midi clock and transport start/stop messages from Mainstage on my laptop to Riffer on the iPad.

Initially I was using Riffer inside of AUM, but AUM doesn't support midi sync in, so that takes AUM off the table.

Next I tried Riffer inside Audiobus 3. Connected via USB/IDAM I am able to receive tempo and clock/start/stop, but the sync is all over the place. I think that sync issue may be because Riffer sometimes needs to operate at 48hz, and connected via USB it can only operate at 44.1. If I connect to the iPad via Bluetooth Midi, I can change the sample rate to 48kz, but then stop/start messages sent over bluetooth from mainstage to the ipad causes some glitch and breaks the connection, and I can even change the tempo anymore (or start/stop the sequence)

Soooo... then I tried ApeMatrix. The sync seems kinda OK, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to start the Riffer sequence in ApeMatrix. Rather I can start it by clicking start in the app, but I cant get ApeMatrix to control the start/stop and temp or riffer, which seems like something it should do (both Audiobus and AUM do)

And I guess I cant use Ableton Sync in any of these configurations because ableton sync doesnt support start/stop/

Any suggestions? Thank you!

Ooof. That's a tough one because of the 44.1k vs. 48k problem. Your first setup using Audiobus and Link is probably the best bet but I don't know how you get past Riffer needing to run at 48k no matter what you do. I'm pretty sure iDAM forces 44.1k - though I could be wrong on that.

So, Riffer Link support doesn't include Start/Stop? If so then that's a second problem with Riffer. Might be good to try to contact the developer if Riffer is lacking in these two areas.

(Just spit-balling here since I don't own Riffer. Hopefully someone else with the app can correct anything I've gotten wrong.)

  • Hmmm yeah it may just be a problem with Riffer that I can't get around (until an update)

I use Riffer to generate random patterns. It has nice controls to manipulate the pattern, including key and root notes.

Are there any other ios random pattern generating apps that people like to use?

Does Riffer have MIDI file export?

  • And yes, IDAM forces 44.1k

  • Pipe riffer to Atom 2?

Do you mind elaborating a little? Thanks.

  • Messing with Rozeta Bassline, it doenst have any of these issues, so its defiantly a Riffer problem

I have also found Riffer timing to be off so I now capture Riffer's MIDI output in Atom 2 and play with the awesome quantize and swing settings in Atom 2 to get it how I want it.

    For AUM

    • Put in an instance of Riffer and Atom2

    • Press the hamburger icon on the left of the Atom instance and select from the list Riffer

    • Press record in Atom
    • Press play in Riffer
  • Should I be able to capture Riffer's output in Atom 2 within Audiobus? I cant use AUM because AUM wont slave to the Mainstage clock.

Yes, you should be able to do that. However, what arrives in Atom 2 will be out of time because Atom will work properly at 44.1K but Riffer won't. They'll be off.

But, if all you want to do is to record the midi output from Riffer into Atom 2, MainStage isn't important. I think you should be able to disconnect iDAM, go to 48K, record Riffer into Atom 2, remove Riffer, then connect back up to iDAM. Pain in the butt, but seems like it should work.
