Our Twilight Lives - guitar-based Indie Rock

This is an old song that I've re-arranged and remixed, it's taken me a while to find the right mix and arrangement for this track.

No amp sims were used in this case, the guitar signal chain is all analog with a Les Paul played into a cheap Joyo American pedal, with the addition of a Big Muff Ram's Head in the chorus section.

The intro sound is created with Korg Electribe Wave, and the solo is actually Gadget's Berlin played with guitar-like phrasing (but going a bit wild with the pitch bend wheel).

Lyric in the spoiler:

Another year has passed me by
Lived beneath a cold a grey sky
Another year that I’ll try to ignore
I’ve been here before

I want to feel alive
And I know that
You and me are cold and empty
You and I are caught in a lie
Our twilight lives
Our twilight lives

Shapes melt in the fading light
Shadows grow to claim the night
The day has gone and the light here is no more
I’ve been here before

I want to feel alive
And I know that
You and me are cold and empty
You and I are caught in a lie
Our twilight lives
Our twilight lives

When we’re trapped in the half-light
When day darkens into night

I want to feel alive
And I know that
You and me are cold and empty
You and I are caught in a lie
Our twilight lives
Our twilight lives

Thanks! I used Auria Pro for mixing, that's where I finish all my songs. It's still (just about) the most versatile and effective mixing environment on iOS.

@richardyot I always like your music! And totally agree about Auria Pro for mixing and finishing. It’s the only app that convinces me to stay on iOS for that stage of the process.

If I may make just one mixing suggestion, very minor, and not even worth adjusting really. But the very first “I want to feel alive” seems overshadowed by the guitar that comes in. It doesn’t seem to be an issue for the other parts of the song. I simply suggest turning down the guitar just in that moment by 1db or 2db, or maybe bumping up the solo vocal there by the same proportion, or adding a duplicate vocal to bump it up there. Again, very minor observation. It sounds to me like the parts weren’t duplicated but played through the whole song so the levels ebb and flow with the song, or it’s automated well.

  • @JoyceRoadStudios thanks for the listen, and you’re right there is something not quite right about that first second of the first chorus, it was bugging me a bit too. I’ll see what I can do to fix it. The loud guitar comes in very suddenly and it’s quite jarring.
