For folks using a Novation Launchpad w/ iPad Pro --- how do you connect?
Hi!
I recently got a launchpad pro and was excited to use it with my anker usb-C hub going into iPad (with power). When I plug in the launchpad, the power to it DOES go on, but AUM and other apps don't recognize it as a device. It only seems to recognize when I have the cable that goes from the "midi out" of the launchpad, but I've seen several videos that show the launchpad directly plugged from the USB port ..... ???
Comments
When I've used a Launchpad with my iPad Pro I've always had to go into the app settings (apeMatrix for example) to choose it as an external controller.
Are you sure you have the USB cable's orientation correct? While the connector is symmetrical there is only one orientation that actually works.
What hub do you use??
Even if the power turns on? In other words, can it be the case that the cable works enough to send power but not Midi?
I have a non-pro IPad and use my LaunchPad with a cck and external power via the Lightning connector on it. When you plug in the LaunchPad, do the lights come on normally on it? What happens if you don’t go through the hub?
If I don't go through hub, Novation works fine, but I use a different "out" port on the novation (namely, the Midi out). If I go through hub, yes, power on novation turns on, but AUM is not seeing it as a device.
Could you please describe exactly which port on the hub or iPad you're using when you connect the LPP in these different ways? I suspect you may be connecting the LPP USB-C port to a USB-C port on the hub that's meant only for a drive. And I'm really unclear how you're connecting the MIDI Out port to the iPad. Do you have an interface that accepts 5-pin MIDI?
Surely:
I am connecting the USB-C out on the novation using a USB-C > USB-B cable, and using THAT cable plugged into my HUB. The iPad connects to the PD port of the hub and is charging while running. The novation turns on this way, but doesn't "play."
I am not using the hub at all when using the Midi method, which frankly I prefer not to use
Hmmm. Have you tried connecting the USB-C port of the LPP directly to the iPad USB-C? I appreciate that you'd prefer to use the hub, but this would establish whether it works at all when connected. I suspect that the LPP may actually expect a USB-C connection; there are a lot more wires in a USB-C cable.
Edit: Obviously, it ought to work with the USB-C to USB-A cable, since it works with Lightning iPads. But the direct USB-C connection to the iPad would remove the hub from the problem. It's always useful to have a known good configuration when debugging others that don't work.
I will try that ... I'm also picking up a new hub today as well ... Thanks so much.
I have my launchpad connect exactly like you described (usb-b port on a usb-c hub) and have no problem at all. Is it not showing up in the midi matrix for you? I‘d guess your hub is faulty. 🤷🏼♂️
Are you sure the PD port on that hub is not just a high speed charging port? I have seen hubs with charging only ports
Also is this a powered hub?
Some Anker USB-C hubs may not to be compatible with iPad Pro 2018, ex: https://www.anker.com/products/variant/usb-c-hub,-7in1-usb-c-adapter/A83460A1
Yeah, does your hub send data?
You need a hub with data connection for the iPad to see the Launchpad via the hub.
This one works great for me:

Sometimes I have a Launchkey 37, Launchpad Mini, and Midi Fighter 3D plugged into AUM no problem.
