If Finder is using preview then that means you opened the photo- if you just click once to highlight, then press spacebar, it previews the image. I also believe you can advance through the photos with the arrow keys. There’s an image preview style pane in finder as well, but I always like list view for everything.

I can’t say I know if it does exactly what you want because I never sort through photos, but you can preview any file that way (not to be confused with the app called preview, which is the default image and pdf viewing app).

I don’t the the Mac photos app either, so I can’t say if that would do what you want either. Some help I am...my main point only was that one click and spacebar is the previewer, and double click opens the photo in the app called preview.

  • I use Pixave for organising screen grabs, for more general imagery you might find this one useful, it’s very good: https://eagle.cool/

  • Although now that I’ve read your replies, just use the Photos app.

Most Pro's I know use Photo Mechanic when they browse the hard-drive and memory cards etc...
...for other stuff it's mostly Adobe Lightroom...

My Dad is an avid Photo.app user and 'imports'(Linked not Copied into the Library) everything into it...
...currently he has +100.000 images in it and it's fast

Personally I just select a bunch of images in a folder and tap alt+space for fullscreen view and use arrows to step thru the images. If I need an over view I just click on the four squares icon.

@tja, May I suggest visiting some of the Photo related sites with these questions and you'll likely get more accurate answers.

    Okk, as you command! :-)

I used to have a license for Graphic Converter way back in time...
The program opens and converts to/from just about any image format you can think of, even C64 Koala Paint images lol.

Torsten the developer is super humble guy so if you have any suggestions for improvements or other questions don't hesitate to send him a message!

Sorry, but $139 for Photo Mechanic 6 or $220 for the version including an image database is way beyond what I planned to spend.

Free to try for 30 days to experience the 'speed' ;)

EDIT: "Adobe" is one of my anger-words ;-)

    Agree 1000% here :D

I actually bought a license of Pixelmator Pro for myself last year...
...it covers my somewhat 'basic' photo & vector graphics needs more than enough.

  • Graphic Converters slideshow feature is high powered, customizable and can incorporate keystrokes for moving, copying etc. I’ve not owned it for a few release generations, but when I last used it as a Photo Editor on a large project, it was a lifesaver.

I cannot enter 100% view with clicking a point of the image, so fast focus control (for rating or labeling) does not seem to be possible.
    Any way to do that?

There's a zoom in there. It could even be a keyboard shortcut that zooms into the location where the mouse-pointer is.
(I'm pretty sure the help-file will be of assistance).

Just try to remember that a Mac is NOT a Windows PC and forcing it to be like one is an exercise in frustration ;)
I will never touch a Windows PC out of my own free will unless being paid to do so...

  • I haven’t had it installed on a Mac in forever, but xnview was always a good image browser (I think it’s a Mac port of something that’s been around for Linux for decades).
