Mixbox vs Turnado vs individual best-of-breed FX apps

I am considering rationalising the FX toolset. I have Turnado and a fair few individual apps from various devs amassed over time (many AUv3 fortunately).

Turnado is deep and extensive and can actually do most things but it’s not the most accessible animal when it comes to Fx control. But at least it’s an all in one, tidy in that sense. I think the same can be said of Mixbox - maybe even more accessible and seems very well regarded but very pricey! And then there is the argument for going with separate best of breed products from a variety of devs for each different effect, although you end up with app sprawl.

What to do :s

  • I’d throw IFXRack into the mix as well. Pun very intended. It’s fantastic.

  • Turnado and Mixbox are very different from each other. Turnado is for mangling and out-there effects, whereas Mixbox is more conventional and has a lot more of the bread-and-butter effects you would use to polish a mix.

Mixbox is definitely a great option and could cover 80-90% of your needs for most mixing tasks.

That’s fair comment, though I’ve managed to dial down and isolate some of the Turnado FX to more give more conventional results. Mind you, i do seek the unconventional at times and the fact that I already own it puts it in contention :) But certainly its sweet spot is more on the mangling/ twisting / slicing n dicing side.

Out of interest, how much mangling is possible with Mixbox?

    Noted - cheers, will investigate

  • Very different imo... Turnado is mostly a performance oriented fx. Not only it’s layout, but the ‘fx quality/efficiency’ is tailored toward that use. I think for general use they sound bad, compared to pretty much everything, but they allow real-time manipulation where others wouldn’t...
For me MixBox is 99% about mixing tools. If it would have been released years ago, my fx collection would look very different... it can replace so many things, but where’s the fun in that? :)
    My consideration would be
    Turnado for performance
    MixBox for mixing and more
Individual fxs, where they offer extra benefits (special reverb, delay whatnot)

Me too my collection would be very different if Mixbox was around when I started. Anybody need and thinking about building their effects, I would say bite the bullet now and buy Mixbox. It will save you lots of money in the long run.

Also the fact that you can plug 8 effects per AU slots is a major plus for any DAW with limited AU slots like Auria or CB2.

As well as providing great workflow, that otherwise not always given on iOS... individual fx presets, chain presets, easy way to rearrange, dry/wet, bypassing options...

  • Not AU , but really like ElasticFX , easy to use ,very nice GUI ,sounds musical

  • Hell, you only live once, use turnado on everything and really mess stuff up! Use the conventional FX if you want to sound like everything else. That sounded more condescending than its intent.

  • @0tolerance4silence @ecou thanks guys, sounds like Mixbox is worthy of serious consideration - adds a ton of flexibility by the sound of it?

I’d never heard of this but sounds intriguing, their website says:
“ Examples of what to expect:

    • Warm and juicy psychedelic swirls painted on the breasts of nude hippies.
    • Shimmering alien landscapes, like in the big Hollywood movies.
    • Garage door busting hardcore fuzz that will make actual blood come out of your ears.
    • Washed out trendy fabric shoegaze ambience.
    • Bleepy bloopy granularly engineered microsounds.”

Lol there’s some truth in this

  • @wired2moon you can simply watch some videos on Youtube to get an idea of how ElasticFX sounds :)

  • Have you considered Classic FX from iMusicAlbum (Igor Vasiliev)? If you're digging Turnado and put off by the price of Mixbox, it seems like a good middle ground.

Also worth noting that Mixbox is mainly emulations of analog hardware, so if you're into making electronic music, it might not be the best fit.

  • Imo MixBox, as the name infers is more geared at mixing, than Tornado, they’re just 2 different tool set. If you have a desktop you can try the desktop demo version of MixBox before you buy the IPad version.

If you like Turnado and you’re feeling brave try building one of these controllers. Making one for myself with no prior DIY knowledge remains the single greatest achievement in my life (maybe tied with creating my daughter, but that was easy in comparison) and it takes using the app to a whole new level.

EDIT: took about a week to build after a lot of thinking time beforehand, but definitely worth it - works as a general performance midi controller too, not just for Turnado.
