BitWig Studio and "Swiss Knife" Apps recording Midi with Ableton Link

Hello all,

First, my apologies for my English grammar (I'm not native in this language)
I was curious if i could record midi notes into Bitwig, with the addition to synchronise the recording with the App that produce the notes on the iPad.
On the iPad there are some good Audio Units that can generate notes, Like Atom, Cycle, Fugue Machine, Rozeta (Bram Bros) etc.
I used the 3 most important "Swiss Army Knifes" to play the Audio Units: AUM, apeMatrix and Audiobus 3.
My goal was to see, if i could start and stop the Apps through Ableton Link, so if i Start recording in Bitwig, these Apps will follow. I also use the iConnectAUDIO4+ interface connection between my iMac and the iPad.
I have configured Bitwig in a way that, as soon as i start recording, the App on the iPad will follow (Ableton Link)
I have heard that Ableton Link shouldn't be used in that way, but more for alike jamming purposes, but tried it anyway, and it seems to work.
In my case, i have noticed a very small latency in recording the notes, and i have noticed that the latency differs between the Apps.
I compared the 3 Apps latency-wise and made an overview in one screen(shot)
I used Atom Piano Roll to generate notes. A single 1/16 and 1/32 note on the first bar and a double 1/16 and 1/32 note on the the second bar. I set the BPM to 150.
I used AUM, apeMatrix and Audobus 3 in separate lanes in Bitwig. All 3 Apps are in Ableton Link mode.
Here's The comparison:

Overview:

Single note lanes:

Bitwig Settings:

As you can see the is some difference, though small. If you set Quantise recording to 1/32 note, all line up good.

apeMatrix comes out as the most accurate, followed by Audiobus 3 and AUM.

Hope this info is usable in some way :)

  • Unfortunately there is no app that has an option to tweak Link "offset" which is what you need
By using Link ,there is no reason to enable Midi Sync out from Bitwig , so it should be turned off to avoid unneeded data traffic
I don't think it will make any difference ,but it's easy to try by disabling .

So , you either have to use Audiobus as master clock and adjust the clock offset (in sync settings) ,or use Bitwig as master (on one specific port ,not all!) , and set the offset from there

  • With Ableton Link in Bitwig, you can't adjust the offset. It is as it comes. In Audiobus 3, you can adjust the sync. offset, but i think this is not for Ableton Link. I tried to adjust it, and as a result, it produces ghost notes at the start, and i also see no difference in offset in Bitwig (same latency). Link is just a follower with BPM detection and time signature, if i'm right.

You have to disable Link and tweak midi offset on the device you use as master providing midi clock.
