Superstition - ChowCentaur

What's better than one ChowCentaur? Two ChowCentaurs!!! (Thanks to @espiegel123 for the idea.)

Signal chain: ChowCentaur 1 (level set at unity gain, tone at 12 o'clock, very low gain to get the classic Klon sparkle); ChowCentaur 2 (unity gain, tone 12, gain at 2 o'clock); Nembrini MRH810 (clean channel set to breakup).

(n.b. if you wanted to do this for real = $$$$$)

Thanks @chowdsp! This sounds a lot like my Klone pedal and will probably be an 'always on' app when using iOS - everything sounds better!

  • @pbelgium : Great sound! You’ve got that Beck vibrato down nicely. The Centaur has increased the enjoyment I get out of playing guitar through my iPad immensely. Crazy. Thanks @chowdsp

  • @pbelgium nice! And how timely for me. It’s my birthday tomorrow and I’ve spent the past few days almost clicking “buy” on a Mythical Overdrive from the Music Emporium. The Rimrock site is completely sold out, but the emporium has an MO with 1N34/OA126 toggle in both silver and gold (so a hybrid of the vintage and standard), and they also have a few lil MOs, one just vintage spec and another with toggle. I really want one to put in front of my Hot Rod deluxe clean channel. Which model did you get?

This clip is helping with gas, a little!

  • Thanks @espiegel123, totally agree - with the ChowCentaur & Nembrini etc., it's definitely a good time for guitarists on iOS (and desktop). I hope @chowdsp can re-package the app or set up a 'tip jar' so we can pay him for his hard work.

Happy Birthday @JoyceRoadStudios! I have the standard MO with 1N34/OA126 toggle. You should be aware that the 'Vintage Spec MO' is based on someone's specific Gold Klon and tweaked to their personal likings, i.e. it is quite different from the standard MO - you can check out a comparison here.

Oh yes, I’ve gone down the research rabbit hole with this. It seems that the newer MO standards are actually hybrids based on Ken’s experience, so they incorporate old standard and vintage spec as well as a newer approach to both. I don’t see the harm in getting the 1N34/OA126 toggle, even if some claim the 1N34 sounds slightly different in a non-toggle format. Do you find yourself using both diode options or mostly preferring one? I can get your version today from music emporium. The rimrock site offers a 1N34/OA128 version that offers more headroom, which I don’t need, and they’re sold out. Thanks for your intel on this.

  • Not trying to take anything away from ChowCentaur, this is a top 5 guitar overdrive plugin on iOS, no question.

I rarely switch diodes, I keep the pedal 'always on' using the 1N34's and it just works.

  • Nice tone. 👍

  • Once they boot strap an app into AUv3 you can run many copies in a rig.
I had a guitar teacher that played a live gig and he nailed that SRV tone.
I asked how he did it and it was 2 TubeScreamers in series before his stock Fender amp.

It pushes the string noises up to intense scratching sounds and makes Texas Blues come alive.

It makes perfect sense that 2 ChowCentaurs would also push the tone into the stratosphere.
3 might approach a Hi-Watt tone but that's not my thing.

@McD 3 might be a bit too much for me, too.
    How about this?

I'll probably try stacking the ChowCentaur with the Nembrini Fuzz next. Klons play nice with other gain pedals - on my real board I sometimes use the Klone with a Big Muff to give it a much needed mid-boost to cut through the mix.
